Default Going to go with seredipity... Cant find a how-to?

I have 2.2 Froyo on my Rogers Captivate. Im looking to put Serendipity on my phone, hopefully without bricking it. Ive been looking around google, and this site for a complete how-to on flashing the rom. Ive already rooted my phone with Superclick, but from there, i dont know what to do next. Ive already downloaded the rom (Serendipity 6.4), and im downloading Odin cause im thinking i will probably need it. Drivers are already installed, and ive done a complete backup of my phone with Titanium Backup.

So, from what ive done already, i think im at the point where i have to use Odin to downgrade to 2.1, and then flash Serendipity to the phone, is this correct?

Hopefully you guys can help....
Thanks!

Choice 1. Serendipity 6.4
Stable

Instructions: Download - Serendipity

Related thread: [ROM] « Serendipity 6.4 » **4/13** - xda-developers

I suggest you search for keywords of interest, unless you're up to reading 1,270 pages of info.

= = = = =

Choice 2. Serendipity 7 (or VII if you're into Roman numerals)
Sorta stable.

Instructions:http://serendipity7.weebly.com/download.html

Ive also found

[GUIDE] How to Install a custom ROM - xda-developers

Which may be of use. I seen that 7 was out, but i wasn't sure if i wanted to flash it since its just been released. Ive heard good things about both of them regardless.
Will this method work in the link that i posted?

The generalized guide should (could) be used as an adjunct to the developer's instructions, as the dev may have ROM-specific thoughts in mind. That said, you can't be too prepared.

Thanks Jack.
I'm downloading Installation.7z now. If i run into anything, I'll post back here immediately. Going off the Dev's instruction... They seem kinda vague for a beginner. Just dont wanna screw it up

Rather than posting back here, I suggest the following two-step:

1. Search for keywords related to any issues that present themselves within the dev's XDA forum. It's a comprehensive, focused body of knowledge.

2. If you can't find what you're looking for (unlikely), post a question - but first identify yourself as noob so that you'll be ducking fewer brickbats.

As fine a resource as Android Forums is, sometime a more direct approach is warranted.

Well, i just completed most of the stuff, but ive run into some strange issues. Titanium backup is crashing all the time, my firmware version now says 2.3.3 (which was expected) but most of all, my model number now says GT-I9000... This is NOT my phone... Was this not based on the I896? I also dont have access at all to 3g, or 4g. Did i download the wrong package?

Oh, and my home button doesnt work.....

You're not being sufficently self-sufficient.

Look at second item in the list: Serendipity VII - Home

The home button is unresponsive in base Gingerbread. Have you flashed the ROM itself?

ROM is pointed to here: Download - Serendipity VII
Top center of page.

Literally here: Serendipity_VII_Build_1.zip

Yes, ive tried to flash the rom itself, but for some reason the rom is not responsive. It takes about half a second, and then says its done. That doesnt make much sence to me since the file is about 140 mb's. When i enter Recovery mode, which it does just fine, it almost seems that nothing happens when i try and flash it.

As for the 2nd item in the list, does this mean that this will not work? That i will have to look for another build? Or just go back to the stock Froyo 2.2?

So you booted into CWM Recovery, navigated to the big ROM file now residing on your phone, selected it with your power button, and attempted to flash it?

P.S. GT-I9000 = good.

What do you mean residing on my phone? All it says in the instructions is to use the update.zip from the SD card....

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, you should be referring (primarily) to: Download - Serendipity VII

See instruction number 13.

That's where the word "navigate" comes in. I'm still on 6.4, but I'm assuming that the first item says "apply sdcard: update.zip." You need to scroll down one line using left button to "choose zip from sdcard," select it with the power button, and then locate the big ROM file that should be on your phone ready for action. Select it.

From what i undersand the Rom.zip file they specify in number 13 should be the Serendipity 7 zip file, which is what was in my root. When i navigate to my sd card to read it, it says update.zip, but it does not say
Serendipity_VII_Build_1.zip
Which is what it should say.... If you click the update after, where does it put it on the phone? I cant seem to find it anywhere.

Did you download it directly to your phone? If yes, then its temporary location is in a download folder determined by your browser. Move it to /sdcard.

If you downloaded it to a PC or other computer, it needs to be transferred via USB cable to your phone's /sdcard folder.

Forget "update.zip" - it's a distraction.

If you have a file manager like ASTRO, use it as a file copier / mover, then confirm that the ROM resides where Recovery mode will find it...in /sdcard.

I currently have it in my SD card, but when i navigate to the SD card, it doesnt show up. Maybe this is half the problem...?

Not trying to be condescending here, but you should see the large ROM file in the phone's /sdcard folder. Have you confimed that it resides there? If so, it becomes a simple matter of correctly navigating to that folder within Recovery in order to select the file for action.

The folder is actually referred to by file managers as /sdcard.

Happy to have helped. Now you can toddle off to here: [ROM][2.3.3] « Serendipity VII » The ROMpire Strikes Back **6/2** - xda-developers

Read through the 122 or pages (it doesn't take long) to get a feel for things. Don't get mired in minutia at this point. Just become exposed to the feel of things, specifically user experiences and resolutions.

Enjoy.

Okay... Onto another issue. Since my phoen is now fully operational, i have wireless working perfectly, however, my signal is crap! I cant even get 3G,im up and down on 2G, or no data at all. Sometimes, no bars. Right now inside my house, i have 2 bars, usually im sitting at full 3G, all bars. I seen on the Serendipity thread, some people are using different modems, I believe im currently on JV6, and i see most of these guys switched to JL2, how do i go about changing this?

Scrap this question... Figured it out using Recovery. Got my 3g hspa back. Also downloading all the captivate modem's for when i go out of town. Thanks anywyas

I personally changed to JK4, it has the best signal for me personally. but there is a thread at the top of the development subforum at xda which has a list of modems, you get them from there and flash them via CWM

Hey dude,

I just want to say that everyone on this thread helped a lot with my first ROM flash. I spent all of today learning all about how everything works, and this thread was one step that let me go through my thing with no problems.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (Rogers, i896), and wanted to get the best ROM for 2.3 I could. I settled with Seredipity 7 build 2, and everything went relatively smoothly.

The only issue I had that made me pee a little in my pants was that my SGS was stuck with the Galaxy S Logo flashing in and out after the first Odin flash (with the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files). I had to do a battery pull, and it restarted with the same issue.

This temporary brick is cured by simply going on to the next step to flash the Reorient_Kernel_1.1 in step 8. From there, it was safe sails, as the regular home menu booted up along with numerous apps that no longer worked. This was then fixed after flashing Seredipity 7.

Thanks again for all your help!

-Eddy.

Thumbs up Crapple

EDIT:
Sorry, panicked too soon. I reflashed Serendipity 7 and it seems to work fine now. I didn't do anything differently, but it just works like magic now. Just wait for me to reply to my reply to my reply that something went wrong again and you'll know to ignore me

Original Message:
I stand corrected.

After I have finally installed Serendipity 7, and it has been fully flashed (after all the creepy computer talking to me), I'm getting a repeated freeze of the phone. For example, I open up the Settings menu, the phone would hang, show the Serendipity logo, then return the the lock screen.

Phone can't really do anything; tried calling it with my home phone and all I got was a phone unavailable tone.

I'm a little stuck here, since I can't seem to flash Serendipity 6.4. Error copying files.

Hi all, so I am finally deciding to root my Captivate. I've been reading for the past few days on rooting to Serendipity, but have yet to find a good, in-depth walkthrough.

So far, I went onto serendipity's website and downloaded the update.zip and serendipity_6.4.zip files.

I put them on both my internal and external sd card (not too sure which to put it on) and tried the boot method thing (sorry for being so vague, but up/down volume and power button boot method). I selected the option to run the update, but an error came up of:
failed to verify whole-file signature

It happened a couple times now, even after redownloading both files and replacing the files, and safely ejecting the phone.

Not too sure what is going on.

Also, Serendipity's website states using Titanium backup, and odin. But since I have never rooted (i'm starting with stock 2.2 froyo) I can't really do any of that.

So what's the next step from here?

Also, reading through this thread, I can't find the ROM folder mentioned or a "/sdcard" folder. I see an external_sd, but that's about it for my phone's memory.

Keep it on the INTERNAL Sd card. the External one doesn't work right for some reason. As for Rooting it, i used Superclick and worked great.

Not sure how far you've gotten at this point, but I'd suggest taking a look at this series of You Tube videos You Tube videos. It's a great painfully detailed walk through for taking a stock Captivate through rooting and flashing a custom rom. It's written specifically for Cognition, but the steps are all the same as for Serendipity 6.x until he starts to download ROM Manager from the Market during the Part 2 video (stop before loading ROM Manager). At this point you will have rooted (so you can do a TiBU backup), flashed back to stock (yeah, you're already on stock, but this method works reliably, so just do it), and completed the first 3 instructions under "recommended" on the Serendipity site.

If you have an external SD card on your phone I'd suggested removing it so you stop confusing yourself. Without the external SD card in, when you plug your phone into your PC it will take you directly to the internal SD root folder. Drop in the update.zip from "recommended" step 4, boot into recovery with the 3 button combo and select "install update.zip".

Flashing the rom is the easy part. Once the phone finishes rebooting from the update.zip flash, transfer the serendipity zip file to the root folder like you did with update.zip and reboot into recovery again, but this time select the option for "select zip file". Go through all the checks to make sure that yes, you really want to do this, then reboot when done.

You'll be rooted out of the box, so if you want to download TiBU and restore your apps from there, you can. You would probably be ok restoring all your apps+app data since you're coming from Froyo, but if any thing acts wonky (Serendipity 6.x is pretty fantastic, so weirdness should be unacceptable), you'll probably want to master clear and reflash the rom, then just restore apps.

My phone is making even the first step impossible.

I have placed the root.zip file into my internal sd, renaming it update.zip just as the video did. I run into the same problem as I did before (signature verification failed). So I decided to try the mac version to see if it is any different. Now it is looking for a directory that doesn't exist "/mnt/internal_sd/update.zip" So I created these directories and placed the update.zip within the folder, and still no luck.

Any clue as to what is going on? I downloaded drivers, I've tried each method atleast 5 times now. Nothing seems to be working

Oh my goodness I finally got it to work. I used Super One Click v1.9.5
Should have listened to js593 earlier. v1.9.5 is truely the one click root, installed any left over drivers I needed and tested everything. Now I can finally move on!

Ok so after and arduous 2 hours. I am finally rooted to Serendipity 6.4!!!! And I must say, I LOVE IT so far. I've only gotten to use it for about 5 minutes now, but still. Everything is super smooth and I haven't run into any problems. Now it is just a matter of restoring everything.

I chose to not do a backup because I wanted to start with a pretty much refreshed phone. I don't want useless apps I didn't use hogging up space in the sd cards.

Good to hear that Superclick worked. That was the one i first tried, and succeeded with it. All the other ones require you do this and that, and try this, maybe it wont work, so proceed to step 8, redo step 3, then proceed back to square one. Superclick did it in one shot without a failure, so i'll stick to using that.

I have to say, even though it did give me a couple problems (especially when trying to re-root after flashing back to stock), it was the only one that actually worked.

Once rooted though, the whole process is extremely easy!

So now that I am finally using Serendipity, I do have a question. With all the previous stock versions (2.1 and 2.2) there was always a function where to slide to call (found in the messaging section). So slide to the right to call, just as you do on the contacts list, but in 6.4, the function is gone. Is there a way to get it back? Do I just have a setting turned off?

So, I have to say that I am impressed by the extended battery of serendipity 6.4

Though it isn't as long as I would dream it to be, but after 12 hours of non-heavy use (actually I barely used it at all) it was at 85% where as on stock 2.1 and 2.2, it would probably be around 65% and 75%
