Default Help ...I want to update my rooted 2.1 to 2.3

I have read so many threads and options about how to do this, I'm confused. I rooted my captivate 2.1 some time back. Now I'd like to update to Gingerbread. Do I need to unroot first ?? Can I just find a new update and flash it ? Can someone tell me easily how to do this ie. what files and how to go about it or where this has been documented properly. thanks, I will be eternally grateful

Brave? Two relevant files included within the link below, along with instructions. One file is linked to via DOWNLOAD, and the other via this package.

Download - Serendipity VII

Back up first using Titanium or MyBackup with the backed-up files domiciled on an external microSD card.

Serendipity dev's thread begins here:

[ROM] « Serendipity VII » | Build 2 | Kernel 4.1 | **6/10** - xda-developers

Flashing a custom ROM and related kernel is not for noobs. Reading material:

all right I'm bad. I installed the Serendipity VII update that Jack suggested. To make a long story short, the first part went well and I updated my rom to 2.3, but when i tried to perform the :Select Reorient_Kernel_1.1, nothing happened ...I let Odin sit for hours but nothing....then I was bricked!!! I managed to build a jig and can get back to Download mode but I can't get anything to load. when I jig the phone and get to download mode, I can then see it with the Odin software but anytime i try to do anything nothing much happens. Is there a particular software that I should run with Odin? Any suggestions ??

oh darn!!

Most Kernels that you Flash are either in .zip form that you flash in Recovery with ClockworkMod. Or in .tar which you flash with SGS Kernel Flashing App.

Ziplip

What I did was:

2. Open Odin3 1.7.
3. Select the PDA, PHONE, CSC, and PIT files in their correct spots.
4. Connect phone in download mode. Use a USB port that's on your motherboard (the ones on the back of the computer). Use the Samsung USB cable.
5. Ensure that Auto-reboot and Re-Partition are both checked. These have a tendency to change after plugging the phone in, so double check them.
6. This is where the bootloader will be flashed, along with stock Gingerbread. Hit Start.
7. Allow the phone to boot.
8. Close Odin3, and open a fresh one. Select Reorient_Kernel_1.1 in the PDA box.
...NOTE: here i had to using the resistor pack also....
9. Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or hold Vol Down + Power).
10. Plug the phone into the computer.

I got thru step 7 and had an OS, and it worked. I now had 2.3.; Next, I proceeded to step 8 (after my note) and it didn't do anything.... or failed in the attempt, which bricked the phone.

Using a resistor pack, i can get the bricked phone into download mode, just not sure what to download now, nothing seems to do anything much with odin

After the 1st 7 Steps I would get the reroient kernel in Zip file form(I assume there is one).Reboot to Recovery and Install the Zip Kernel File. Or try this 2.3.4 Captivate Kernel:

[KERNEL]TalonDEV 0.4.3 (0.4.4.21)[OC/UV][Voodoo Color & Sound v10][ZRAM][EXT4][340MB] - xda-developers

Thanks for replying Ron. Problem is I can no longer perform steps 1-7. I can get the phone to download mode (by jigging), but that's it. If I unplug the phone or do anything with it after it's jigged to download mode I get the bricked icon. However, once in download mode, Odin does recognize it. I have tried redoing the 7 steps but Odin hangs. Any other suggestions. I found what seems like an online unbricking service for $50. I just hate to give up.

And furthermore, once you're phone is stabilized you may wish to consider Apex, my new girlfriend, along with the DarkCore 3.1 kernel.

[ROM][2.3.4][Gingerbread JVR] ♦ Apex 9.1 ♦ 08/12 - xda-developers

ficeto's sf page - Browse /JVR at SourceForge.net

You'll want this updated kernel file ("C" is for Captivate, FYI):

DarkCore_3.1_JVR_C.tar

Flash the tar file with SGS Kernel Flasher:

[APP][Update] SGS kernel flasher v1.6.2 - flash a kernel within android - xda-developers

To all who have responded to this thread. thank you!! After bricking my phone, building a jig, ordering an external battery charger and finally buying a $9 custom made jig, I was able to get my captivate back to 2.1 stock with the I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe. I will no doubt be back with more questions as I have no plan to stay with stock but I am relieved to find I could get back to square one. Thanks again!!
