Thanks big Geeve!!! I had no previous experience rooting and this was a lifesaver. The last att update really messed up my gf's cappy..I was able to root and flash an ics 4.0.3. rom beginning with this guide. Your the man!
Thanks Brother !! How do I donate and support the cause ?
Also FYI, I started through the process and flashed the Autoroot and my existing rooted apps worked ! So I stopped right there and didnt flash the kernel. Any issue with that ?
Geeve, thank you very much. I certainly appreciate the amount of time it must have taken you to do this for all of us who are not experts. I know this will help me and I am sure others will also benefit. Thanks again.
Geeve, dido to supmags post. This couldn't have been any more effortless. Worked like a charm for me to with no problems.
The hardest thing for me was trying to find this exact guide in the middle of all the other lacking guides out there to root your phone. Especially cause I didn't understand the terminology. If I have any newbie advice I can offer, read up a little to understand the terminology it will help you here and in the near future when you ready to start flashing roms. I don't know if its forbidden to make any references to XDA but there is an awesome Vocabulary Post there. Sorry I dont know the exact name but. If I run by it I will edit this post.
Have no idea what's happenin... Did what you said exactly step by step - downloaded files, started Odin, selected "I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar" through the PDA button. everthing worked, phone went into re-boot. Showed the at&t logo and.. rebooted again. That's happening over and over now.. Tried doing everything again.. nothing happened. Any ideas?
EDIT:
ended up flashing 2.3.5 stock firmware that I got off the net. Tried rooting again - ****ed up the booting process.. Again... Seems that this problem is phone specific. Mabye my phone just doesn't want to be rooted that badly?:/

I'm able to get my captivate into download mode, however Odin will not acknowledge my device. Any help would be much appreciated, I've been waiting to root for quite some time now.
Thanks Geeve,
I hope this Root helps my device.I have had issues ever since I put GB on my phone.Any suggestions on a stable ROM would be appreciated as well.
Thanks again on the Root Guide it was super easy and quick.
thanks a lot, it is really helpful. tho, I have one question -- I'm using captivate with stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 updated from Froyo 2.2 - the problem while rooting with update.zip file is it displays me an error "Signature Verification failed" error.
Does this be a hurdle for me to root with the method guided by you ??
The root went smooth and worked great, but ever since i got GB,my phone has no sound no matter what settings i change, and after rooting i still have no sound. I have a samsung captivate from at&t. Any ideas?

Well nevermind, out of frustration I gave my phone a slight love tap on the back and the sound started working again. So apparently its just a hardware issue.
Sorry I have been gone for a little while. My little girl turned 1 and is running all over the place, so I have been a bit busy. I will still pop in from time to time and try to help when I can. I have been on ICS for a while now so I may be a little rusty.
For those that want to donate, please donate to Susan G Komen for the cure (or any other charity). Then it is a win/win, you get to help and say thanks all at the same time
Shoot me a PM if there is another guide you would like to see and I will do my best to get it done. No promises, but I will try.

I had this same issue for awhile. There is a guide out there that better explains it, but all had to do was take the phone apart and loosen a screw that fastens down the speaker unit. I'm on my phone now but will try to find that guide for you later. You have to remove the 6 screws under the back cover, carefully pull the panels apart and just slightly loosen the screw next to the speaker unit. Mine was cutting out to and I'd have to tap it like you did. That screw is too tight, that should fix your issue.
I noticed some others with the same problem I'm having but didn't see a clear answer so I'm gonna ask again.
When I open Odin and put the phone into download mode using method 3 as described in the guide, the phone goes into download mode but Odin doesn't recognize the phone. Is there anything I can do to make this work?

Try a different USB port (one that is part of the Mother Board not on the front panel), different cable, make sure you have drivers for your phone installed, worse comes to worse try a different computer.

Geeve
OK, trying a different computer worked. The first one couldn't fine the right drivers for some reason but only in download mode. if I connected the phone to the compute normally it worked just fine, automatically loaded the drivers and allowed me to use the usb storage, but it didn't like the download mode. Why does going to and older computer solve this?? Oh well it finally worked, so now the fun really begins.
Since the gingerbread update, none of my gps helper apps or security apps were working. Everything was complaining there was no superuser access. Thank goodness someone found a way to reclaim root!!
I have searched the Internet on how to root my Samsung Captivate and was not having a lot of luck. I located these instructions and voilla...it worked. Thanks so much for the time and effort that you put into this posting.
Iv tried this soo many times but every time I plug in my phone in download mode it says it cant find a gadget serial driver for the device and I cant find any driver updates from windows to help me out. Someone helpp!
Works like a charm, sir. thanks for the detailed instructions. interesting that i didn't expect was that my gps works great now. i have been struggling with that ever since i upgraded to froyo. wifi tethering also works great. thanks again.
my gps is also spot on. i'm pretty much freaking out right now, this is incredible.
i tried this but couldnt get it to work no matter how many times i tried redownloading it or changing usb ports. i did the other root with the corn kernel and it worked first try. dunno whats up but it doesnt matter since i got it with the other one.
I am working on the very first Android device I ever touched, an ATT Samsung Galaxy I897. Unlocked. Software version 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Kernel version KK4 something (I am not near the phone now, if it is relevant I will repost)
I am totally new to Android, but a long time and well-educated Linux user. I couldn't bear the idea of having a phone which is not rooted, hence I am trying to root the device before doing anything else. The device has been on my desk now for almost a week and I don't get any further.
I am trying to find a way to root the phone using Heimdall. I will install and use Windows if that is the only way to go.
I have installed both Heimdall and Heimdall-frontend sucessfully. I have downloaded the Android development packages.
Then I downloaded the two .zip files as listed in post #1 of this thread: I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.zip and KK4_stock_kernel.zip. As I understand, I should first flash using the Autoroot-Designgears and then the KK4_stock_kernel, correct?
However when I unzip those files and I load the .tar into Heimdall-frontend, the program complains that there is not XML file to load. I have searched "the entire internet" for a Heimdal firmware version, but it seems not to be there. I did find standard kernels like 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6 etc, but these are standard kernels without root access, correct?
I am more than prepared to use Heimdall command line as explained in post #6, but a .pit file is being mentioned. In the .tar from the first post, I only see a zImage file.
Now how should I proceed?
BTW, it seems that the glass echidna site cannot be reached. I have read those pages before, I cannot recall that I am missing something critical here.

so the heimdall version says i need to expand the contents of the android sdk into the downloads directory. does odin not require downloading the android sdk and installing it?
sorry if these are n00b questions. just got my captivate a couple days ago.
Based on all of the positive reviews, I decided to try your guide to rooting with 2.3.5. I have a captivate that I just upgraded to 2.3.5 and, among other things, the constant crashes and tethering manager is killing me.
However I'm stuck! I'm at the point where odin is supposed to be flashing I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar, but after 20 minutes there is no change, no progress bar on odin or the phone, and odin still says
<ID:0/006> SetupConnection..
as the last message in the log. Phone is in download mode. Is it safe to disconnect and try again or keep waiting? Many posts in this forum have said that they have been able to do this in 15-20 total!
Thanks
EDIT:
Turns out "Run as Administrator" is REALLY important. (read and FOLLOW ALL directions)
My phone actually bricked when the cable fell out while I was waiting and nothing happened.
While in the brick screen, I flashed the AutoRoot tar file and that actually got everything back on track. Thanks again!

Reason: nubie problem fixed itself
Thumbs up on an awesome guide and making what seemed like a headache (if you listened to other sites) so effortless adn painless. I've rooted my captivate 2.3.5 and will play with it to get used to it, then probably use your guide for 4.0.3 ICS flashing. I have ICS on my Asus Transformer Prime TF300T and love the updated look and feel of the os versus gingerbread.
Well, Geeve, I just attempted the root on my Captivate, and searching throughout the entire web, I chose your instuctions, AND THEY WORKED LIKE A CHARM. Hats off to you, sir. Hopefully it wont have any problems, but I just installed and updated busybox without a problem, so thanks again!
GEEVE!!!!!! I downloaded all the files and extracted them in a few mins. I feel like the rooting process took less time than that! I had my Captivate rooted before but with the update I lost it. I had been looking for a fast easy way to do it and this was it. Thanks for the easy steps and supplying the proper files. All my settings were still intact and my phone immediately had improvements from the flaws of Gingerbeard update!! 4/20 it up brah and once again appreciate it!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! After spending hours searching, downloading and trying a dozen things to root 2.3.5, I found this. 15 minutes later, I'm rooted! Great work!
