I have had my phone booted ever since I got it, but am still kind of an newbee. Anyway, I followed the steps exactly in post 1. At the step that says when the ATT screen comes up remove the usb cable. I did. I have the boot screen as described however the phone seems stuck on that screen. It has been over 30 minutes and the boot process has not gone any further. Help please

Have had my phone rooted some sometime. Went through the steps in post 1 exactly. When I pulled the USB out at the ATT screen the corn screen as described came up but nothing more has happened in over an hour. Any ideas Please.

First, confirm you are flashing the correct file with Odin. If so, pull the battery and try and boot it with the USB cable unplugged. If it still gets stuck repeat the process of putting the phone into download mode and flashing with Odin. This time when the phone reboots, leave the cable plugged in. When booting up the first time after flashing it, it may pause on the splash screen for a few minutes, but if the screen appears to be stuck for longer than 10 minutes, we might want to try and boot into recovery.

I could get nothing to work. Finally used Odin to reflash with KK4_stock_kernel.tar and I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar. I used these originally to root. This time using the process exactly as listed in the post Odin indicates all is well but none of the programs that require root can get access to super user.

Is there a solution? Thanks

Don

P.S. This is the link to the procedure I used

Here is what I think your problem is, I897UCKF1 is version 2.3.3 but the korn kernel you are flashing is for 2.3.5. You should flash your phone back to stock, then update it with Kies to 2.3.5 and then flash the korn kernel.

Before I started to flash to the korn, I checked the phone and it listed the system as 2.3.5. That is why I started the process to flash to korn. Am I confused, most likely yes. Current settings are Firmware Ver. 2.3.5
Baseband Ver. I897uckk4
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489
Build Number Gingerbread,UCKK4

How do I flash it back to stock? Is that where I go into settings, Privacy, Factory Data Reset, and erase all data on phone? Or do I go into boot into recovery mode and do a wipe/factory reset

Thanks for your time and help

UCKK4 is 2.3.5 and should work with the korn kernel, but I have seen it lock up on occasion, especially if the phone is not reset or the cache not cleared prior to flashing. You could try a factory reset and clearing the caches, but if that doesn't work, while it's tedious, in order to be working with a clean stock install, I'd flash the phone completely back to stock.

[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY - xda-developers

This will put your Captivate back to out-of-the-box condition with Android 2.1 You will then want to use Kies mini to update to 2.2 and then again to 2.3.5.

At this point you will root with the korn kernel and you should be able to flash an ICS rom with CWM.

If you use the korn kernel, yes, you will remain rooted.

Yes you will, but as long as you have backed up your data, it's not a big deal. Do you know which rom you are going to try?

I am thinking of using,
CM9-captivatemtd-Glitch-V14-B3.zip

Master_ICS_Rom_V3.1_by_VibranTurk-Cappy.zip

I may not do it for a wile as my Titanium Backup did not do as good a job as I would have liked. Do you have a suggestion for another app that might do better?

I'd go for Doc's master ICS Rom (your #2 choice). I've put it on several captivates and never had a complaint.

Sorry I wasn't clear. When I used titanium recovery, i wasn't pleased with the results, had to do quite a bit of setup. Can you recommend another backup that might do "better".

A nandroid (recommended) backup will create a complete image of your current setup and you should be able to restore that any time a flash goes awry. Titanium is generally the backup that I use but the Pro (paid) version can backup all or groups where the free version I believe only permits backups individually. As for other apps, sorry, i don't have enough experience with others to recommend an alternative.

Have had my Cappy since Oct of 2010, and my only updates have been through official channels. I had weird issues with touch screen not responding after update to GB, and thought I'd pull my hair out. Tried going back to 2.2 @ ATT Repair site- but they screwed that up too.

Anyway- I finally did this process last night, and then this AM wiped battery stats, and grabbed Titanium and uninstalled 4 ATT apps.

I have noticed that since I've added the Corn Kernel and rooted- my reception indicator is very weak. It often changes from 3G to Edge, shows no bars, and with Wifi- very weak as well. Any suggestions?

I do not seem to have any of the reboot issues listed. I have noticed more breakup in my conversations today.

Thanks Geeve and company for all of this!!!

Do not use rom manager with Samsung phones. It has trashed your custom recovery and you will have to re-flash the kernel to get it back.

No. You should re-install the kernel package you used to root, which will reintstall ClockworkMod Recovery. Rom Manager breaks CWM and you will not be able to boot into recovery to flash custom firmware. For example, if you flashed the Siyah kernel with Odin to root your SGS2, then you should install it again the same way you did it the first time.

I have two Captivates, mine and my wife's. These are identical, bought the same day, running Gingerbread, updated using the same Kies installation. Cornkernel 7.05 works fine on mine but crashes regularly on my wife's - during phone calls, using apps, just sitting there doing nothing.

I do not remember which was the kernel that I flashed, Do you think it will be a problem if I flash another kernel?
For example, if I had corn kernel flashed using Odin and now I flash SpeedMod Kernel using Heimdall Suite 1.1.1

If you don't know what the android version is, then it's unlikely it would let you boot back into android, but it may get you into recovery. At this point it would probably be best to take it back to stock and work forward from there.

About the time I was ready to go, my computer crapped out so am just now getting back to installing ICS. A quick question on Tritium backup. When I restore do I restore "Missing apps + all system data" or "Restore all apps with data"?

Thanks again

Just to be sure, are we talking about the Captivate model SGH-I897? Or are we talking about the Captivate Glide (with the keyboard)? I thought that the last official update for the SGH-I897 was 2.3.5 (UCKK4).

I'm sorry about the earlier posts, I was told that the phone was coming with 2.3.6 firmware and when I finally got the phone it has 2.3.5. Thanks again for your response and i'll be trying the guide soon.

No problem at all, I just wanted to make sure you got the right information. It's very important that you install the correct firmware for the exact model/android version.

If you are referring to sim-unlocked, then no. That's independent of the update.

Default Please help with CWM

Hi, I have spent all day online reading these forums and they have been very helpful. I have now reached the point where I need some help.
I have been trying to do a Nandroid backup so I can install a ROM. This is my first time with any of this.
I am fairly certain my phone is rooted (used Oneclick). I installed ROM manager before I read posts below by lunatic59 (thanks) that said not to. As a result, I cannot enter CWM recovery; only stock recovery.
I have Odin3, drivers, KIES mini, and a ROM that looks good; I think I could do this if I could get CWM to work.
I have been reading about the kernel fix but it seems to be for 2.3.5 and I want to make sure I do the right thing for my 2.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Use the same oneclick that you used to initially root and it should fix CWM. If not, you may have to take it completely back to stock and start over.

Sorry, don't know. But I would assume that it wouldn't work.

First, if you read Chainfire's notes:
Quote:
This app cannot be uninstalled if it was installed with your ROM or root. If there is no uninstall option, it's because you placed it in /system/app, not me. It is impossible for an app to be installed in /system/app by the Play store. In fact, the entire /system partition is read only at runtime. The only way for an app to be placed in /system/app is via a rooting process (which usually installs Superuser), or by remounting the system partition as read/write and manually putting it there.
Second, deleting the app won't remove root and probably won't fool TWC.

Default Odin failed downloading Corn Kernel. Bricked?

Trying to upgrade a Captivate running Eclair to rooted Gingerbread. First I ran "i897uckk4 Odin one click with absolute latest and safe BL's.exe" This loaded stock gingerbread 2.3.5 and everything worked perfectly. I then put the phone in download mode. I then ran Odin Odin3v1.85, selected CornKernel_UCKK4_v706.tar, clicked the start button, and then got a FAIL message from Odin. The phone was still in the download mode so I removed and re-inserted the battery. Now when I turn on the phone I get the message "Firmware Upgrade Fail, Try using recovery mode." I can't get into recovery mode and can't get into download mode, even using the dongle. Is this phone permanently bricked?

When you try and turn on the phone, does anything happen?

Hey Geeve - BTW, used your other guide to root Cappy - worked great-tks. Quick question. I did flash this kernel to get CMW - seemed to be ok. However,I cannot get my phone recognized now. Rebooted both laptop and phone (twice). Any suggestions??

Thanks for this root guide. I picked up a used cappy to keep as a backup device. I had to search around a bit to find this guide. Several others were out there, but they often required many more steps and wanted you to go back to eclair. This root guide works flawlessly.
After rooting I went to cm10 and on to cm10.1 - This phone is awesome on those roms especially when you consider it's age.
My only problem now is trying to get the google play store app to work without having a sim card. I installed gapps both times I did the cm install but it's just not there with all the other google programs.
