Because I can't afford the monthly $85 for my cell plan anymore I'm thinking of switching back to MetroPCS. I still plan to use my Captivate like a tiny little tablet for games. I want to upgrade my phone to Ice Cream (it's on Gingerbread right now), but am not sure I'll be able to do it before switching away from AT&T. I know that I need to root the phone in order to do this upgrade, so I want to know if I can do the rooting and upgrade even without actual service to the phone. I don't see why I couldn't, but want to be sure.

Your right, no cell service is needed to root the phone.
