Remapping the keys

Hello. I've been looking to remap the buttons on the Samsung Captivate Glide. I found a thread (can't post links yet, but the thread is titled "Reassign Physical Keys?") from about a year ago that said to edit a "STMPE_keypad.kl" file.

After an hour of trial and error, I've finally gotten my phone to a soft root (I can run "su" via a terminal and superadmin picks it up, but "adb root" via command prompt won't work). I edited this file with the suggestion in the thread (map key 217 to camera) and it's working.

My question is, is there any way I can map a key to open up "compose a new message"? Similar to the button at the top-left corner of the LG Xenon. Is there a command, like "MESSAGES" or something I can map a key to?

Thanks for the find! Unfortunately, ButtonRemapper can only assign the following functions:

Are you interested in perhaps a screen swype to open/compose sms instead of a button reassignment?
The reason I ask is, the laucher I use, has the option to assign screen gestures to perform functions, such as sms.

I am going to say that you might not find it as it is not a function that is usually done with the hardware keys.

However, I will look into this more in the morning so I can research the other device you mentioned that does do it.

I could go for that for now, it would still be simpler than going to messages then clicking the little pencil icon

Thanks. Here's the Wiki page if you're interested. The OS on that device is the Symbian S60

Ahh, and that's why. I had a feeling it wasn't an Android device or at best _maybe_ a tablet? Symbian and Android are two different OS's. Android only has the keys available for mapping in the list you posted. So I'm back to saying that it isn't going to happen.

Well thanks for your efforts anyways. Guess I'll have to learn Android API for this one. Do you know of an app that can create a shortcut to compose SMS as an icon?

Not sure, there _might_ be some setting in Handcent that would give that function. Look at some of the third party SMS apps.

Hi, I was wondering how to remmap a HArd Key to do nothing. I can eighter modify the .kl file or use ButtonRemapper, but what should I write in order to dissable this key.

The reason is because the volume down button is broken and keeps pressing itself when the phone heats up.
