Has anyone else experienced trying to wake your phone from sleep only to find it has been powered off?
Strangely, this did not happen the first 2 days, but started after charging the phone fully for a second time.
Could this any way be app related? I've only downloaded a few so far such as ATK.
Edit: I checked my phone right after writing this, and what do you know, it turned off....
Mine did it last night and I thought it just died, but it wouldn't turn back on even when plugged in. I took the battery out and put it back then it powered on and showed 21% show it must have just turned off on its own.
Mine did the same thing last night while still plugged into the computer. It wouldn't turn on, so I also had to remove/replace the battery to get it to turn back on. It was fully charged too....
Mine did it twice yesterday, both times with 60+% battery. Its possible I somehow did a long press on the power button and selected shutdown in my pocket, but it seems a bit unlikely.
My captivate has twice turned itself off during the night while I was sleeping and once while I was running errands with it in my pocket.
I've searched the internet for people having similar problems but have found none.
Anyone else having this issue?
I love the android OS (came from iphone4) but I'm second guessing my phone selection with the gps and now this issue.....
Yea. It's happening to a few peoples phones on here. No answers yet as to why it happens. Mine did it a couple days ago, but hasn't done it again since then.
Yeah I've noticed that mine's done the same thing too a couple of times. Here I thought I was going crazy, like maybe I had somehow accidentally told it to turn off while it was in my case? o.o
mine hasn't stayed on for any length of time since i bought it
Having the same problem. About once a day it just turns off.
At first it was only happening when the phone was in my pocket, so was thinking a combo of buttons were getting pushed. Well, just now it happened with the phone sitting on my desk. Phone just dies, go to unlock it nothing. If I press power the phone boots up and it has a 47% charge. No memory cards or rooting done, just apps installed. So the real question, is this a hardware issue or an app issue. Guess I will be doing a hard reset and not loading anything to see what happens. What a drag, otherwise LOVE the phone. The only thing that I’m noticing is JuicePlotter says 47% but the icon on the notification bar shows 75%+ charged. Is something thinking to battery is dead and shuts if off whereas it's actually got a good charge?

Mine is doing the same thing. I'll be using it and let it go to sleep and five minutes later attempt to wake it back up and it's turned itself off . Only thing I can think to do is to exchange it for another one since not everybody is having this problem. What a PITA!!!
Mine's doing this also. I'm thinking I might just take it back and exchange for a new one unless it's a simple fix. I'll give it a couple more days. I did look at the battery and it seemed loose on the end that doesn't have the connectors. I wedged a small piece of paper between the battery and the battery slot so it doesn't wiggle anymore. We'll see if that helps. Otherwise back to the store it goes. What a PITA!!! >
Having the same issue here. Just happened 3 times today within 2 hours. Just did a hard reset to see if one of the apps that I installed was causing an issue. Now playing the waiting game.

Happened 2 more time after I wrote this. Just hard reset the phone and will see what happens... Waiting game started!
This is very odd, have you all found any fix or what is causing it? I know the issue my friend had we couldn't find anything other then taking the phone back and getting another one. NO issues at all now with it. Def everyone with this issue keep everyone update so everyone that might have this issue later on will know whats going and what to do.
Sadly, I am returning the phone for an iphone 4 today because of this issue. It sounds like a lot of people are experiencing this and I just don't want to go through it again. Android, I hardly knew thee.

I did a hard reset Monday afternoon on mine. Worked flawless (even the GPS would lock within seconds) until about 8 PM last night when I got home. Within an hour the unit died twice while sitting on my desk. Next step is to get it swapped. Love the phone otherwise but I need to trust it to stay on. (and the GPS is now doing the not locking thing too)
Mine ended up turning off, and not being able to turn back on (I think SetCPU was the issue). Got a little scared, but then realized I made a nandroid backup (thank goodness), and was able to roll it back before I install SetCPU. So I'm not installing that app again until more testing can be done on it
I ended up having to return mine for an exchange. Mine was so bad that it turned off every single time it went to sleep. The only thing i did to mine was root it and remove some AT&T apps, I didnt have time to install anything before it started acting up. Since I got mine through Letstalk.com I will be without my captivate for at least a week. I sure hope the new one doesnt do this too. It sucks that this had to be my first post!

At first I thought it might be a problem with inadvertently pressing the power off button, but today it happened after I'd set the phone on my notebook in a meeting. I know darn well the button didn't get pushed then! I took it over to AT&T and exchanged it, no problem. Hopefully no problems with the new phone :-)
4x this am now. i changed my task killer to agressive with screen off last night. changing back to safe with screen off. maybe there is something getting hit
no issues since ive neen in safe

I started having this problem also. Didn't until after having the phone for a week. Nothing changed from stock setup other than adding a few apps from the market.

Are you running advanced task manager in aggressive mode?
Add me to this list. Happened 2 days in a row. Once in the car and once while I was asleep. This is a problem. I use the phone as my alarm. How am I supposed to wake up?!
This is extremely interesting. Has not happened to me, but my phone will randomly wake up from sleep mode and display the lock screen and then shut off.
I, like all of you, have experienced this many times...I originally thought that it was me pushing the button a little too hard, but after paying closer attention to it, I realized it's not me. The phone just decides when and when not to be on.
If I don't see a fix, I will more than likely return it for a IPHONE. I really like this phone and wish it it didn't have this seemingly common problem.
I had the same issue. Me and my wife bought our phones at the same time about a week and a half ago. Her phone has had no issues. Mine would turn off randomly. I swapped mine out at the ATT store and so far (3 days) have had no issues.

As I noted earlier, I got a replacement on the 29th. It was doing okay, but I just had to power it back up after it shut itself off. Guess I'm about to head over to the AT&T store again :-(
This has happened to me twice. It was always when the phone was sleeping so I had thought that I accidentally shut the phone off, but I was pretty sure it wasn't normal. Good to know that I'm not the only one with this !
I've had my phone for less than a week. I love it (but have also had periodic GPS troubles).
I had my phone charging and was actually using a "sound machine" app for sleep. It just shut off at 2am and wouldn't turn back on. This morning, as a last resort, I pulled the battery and it came on charged 100%. This is crazy!
My vibrant has started doing some weird random reboot, its a really strange process. The phone becomes unresponsive, the screen goes completely black. I think its off, so I try turning it on, and again no response. Then suddenly, the phone starts at a state that appears to be a reboot, it is scanning all the sd cards again, and starting fresh. The strange part, the phone never displays the boot up screen, you know the T-mobile boot up screen, then that fansy rainbow colored S. It just stops responding, and goes to a black screen, and does a reboot mysteriously behind this black screen.
BTW, in the vibrant forum, other users are reporting random reboots too. So i don't know if this is a hardware issue, or a software problem.
Mine is doing this too. It has been happening about every 2 days for me, for no apparent reason. I'm not sure what the problem could be, but sounding like an issue with this many posts. Unsure if I should swap it or not at AT&T store. Phone has been working fine minus that detail.
this happened twice to me today. the first time was a few minutes after i unplugged it from the wall charger. the second time was an hour later after i unplugged the phone from my car charger.
My phone has not shut off by itself when Wi-Fi is not enabled. If Wi-Fi is enabled it will shut down. It did so 3 times in 3 hours with Wi-Fi on. I shut it off and have not experienced the shut-downs. Can some others try this experiment and post their results?

Well i got my replacement phone on Monday and this one has not shut off once yet! Maybe there was a bad run on the hardware. Now I can start to enjoy this phone.

I tried this but it still turned off randomly during idle.
What has seemed to work for the past 3 hours or so (it was turning off every 10 minutes) is I took the battery out and got the app advance task killer. I did have a bunch of apps going so I think that may have helped.
