I have a samsung Captivate, I am trying to root the phone, but whenever i put it in debugging the phone can't connect to my computer (windows 7 x64). I have been trying to find a driver but none of them work, am I really going to have to pay $30.00 for a one time download of a driver or is there another way!?
First of all, welcome to the forums! It's a nice community to be a part of, so I do hope you stick around.
I sincerely doubt you'll have to pay for a driver. Was the driver you downloaded the one linked on this page? And are you trying to just get at the files on the SD card, or use the device for development?
If all you're trying to do is root, download the OCLF from the Marketplace. Run that, and ONLY choose the first option "root". Reboot your phone into recovery mode when told, apply the update.zip, reboot again and voila. Root.
No cable connection or drivers necessary.
I strongly suggest not actually applying the "lag fix" or anything else in the package. Just use its rooting abilities.

I am trying to root my phone to have the super user abilities and i want to get rid of the at&t apps and be able to side load apps, will the marketplace download do that? And moonfire im on my phone but i dont know if i have tried that one but the one i have been getting directed too is driverdetective or somrthing like that
Alright, found a post - on these forums, no less - that links 32 and 64 bit USB drivers, it can be found [here]. Honestly, the driverdetective thing makes me a bit nervous - I dun like how it wants you to download their exe. Now maybe it's a legitimate site, and in that case, it's just annoying and I won't use on on principle lol.
And yes, that method that sremick suggested would also root your phone. Tbh I didn't do it that way, so I can't comment more on its method. And yes, using either method of rooting will give you superuser abilities and you'll be able to kill the bloat. As far as sideloading goes - I thought any of the Galaxy S line had that ability without root, you just had to enable third-party apps and use either the development software (on your computer) or the Marketplace app to install any .apk files. Although I'd still go for root, de-bloating rocks.

Well, assuming that you're rooted now - go have fun! Some root apps I recommend are:
Superuser: Keeps track of what apps have root access. Titanium Backup: Backs up apps, able to freeze (essentially removing, but you can still undo the action if something crashes) bloat apps, and back up settings, texts, pretty much anything you can think of. Root Explorer: Many people regard this as the best root file manager. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out what its use is, especially if you freeze apps with TB. Shoot Me: Shake your phone to take screenshots.
Keep in mind that you are the superuser, root user, admin, whatever you wanna call it, now. You can screw things up and break applications, so please do be careful when going through the phone files.

Alright, before sideloading any, you have to allow it. To do this, go to Menu > Settings > Applications and make sure Unknown sources is checked.
Now there's two ways of sideloading apps: By using the command prompt on your computer (but requires you to have the Android SDK installed) or just using your phone. I'll describe the second, since the first requires the USB part to be working:
1) Get the .apk file to your phone. I like using Dropbox, but you could probably just email it to yourself as well. Or move it by the USB cord, but the first two options are wireless.
2) Navigate to where the file is located. I use the paid version of Astro (there's a free one, too), but there are others that will most likely work.
3) Tap the file and it should ask you to either Browse File or Open App Manager, choose App Manager.
4) The top right should have a button for Install, tap that and you're done!
I'm hoping this works correctly, but if not just say how far you get and we'll go from there. I'm not sure how different it would be on the Captivate.

I'm gonna try that now, and @ sremick did you download the froyo leak for your captivate? because im running into the same problem with my drivers is there any other way do that? and moonfire i tried that link you gave me for the drivers and it instaleed but it wont do anything past that

No, I depend on my phone too much to risk dabbling in leaked pre-release development builds not meant for end-consumers. They have been known to have serious bugs and are not optimized due to lots of debugging stuff left on/in.

Which driver did you choose, the first one I linked or the one in the AndroidForums thread?
And how did you install the driver? I went through Device Manager and set it there, not by unzipping and running the setup. I can walk you through that if you like.
The driver you linked doesn't say it supports Windows 7. I'm having the same problem. I have installed several different drivers and they say successfully installed but then in My Computer it doesn't show up as an external drive.

1) You don't need to install any drivers in Windows to just use the device in mass-storage mode.
sorry it's taken me so long to respond but if you guys are still looking at this thread, but mass storage mode will work fine, but i need a driver or something for when i'm in download mode, or the firmware update mode
