I find it difficult to believe that speech to text is not standard on this new phone. I'd rather not have to install Vlingo to get a "Mic" key on my keyboard. Any suggestions out there. I have rooted it I tried installing Voice.apk but that doesnt do what I want.
It took me 3 freakin hours but finally I figured it out. You must download google voice search and also the gingerbread keyboard. The free one works fine.
1) download gingerbread keyboard off market
2) go to general phone settings, keyboard, make sure it is enabled
3) open up message, long press on the text input area, select input method, select gingerbread keyboard. You will not get a black keyboard with the mic present.

Google Voice Search not Google Voice.

Has anyone tried installing the full version of the flex T9 keyboard? That supposedly provides the voice control and keeps the swipe feature that is already part of the keyboard?
Hey guys, I installed Voice Search and can't seem to get it to work. I tried doing it just like the video showed when I say "Text to" it will open a texting screen but always puts the recipient into the message. I have yet to get it to fill in the recipient.

Do a search in the apps market for keyboards. Choose the free app for gingerbread keyboard. after install enable it in your languages and keyboards settings. go to your normal messaging program. long press on the type box. choose input method. choose gingerbread keyboard. when that is done you will get the black keyboard with the mic to press and voice text.
and thanks to all other posts. i was about to start testing the durability of this phone against walls.
I'm really getting fed up with the google voive to text. If there is any sort of noise in the area besides my voice it either doesn't work, or if it does which is rare, it inputs words that do not make any sense. Not to mention i cant even use it in my truck with the windows rolled up, radio off, and vent closed. lame lame lame.
I have read the threads and I have got my google assisted talk to text to work....kinda. It does not recognize all the names in my contacts. It does not work while driving, the time I want it to work the most. It is unable to detect my voice. I have downloaded the gingerbread thing and the google voice search. The google app allows me to talk and text but it doesn't work well unless I am inside a building and it is very quite. Can anyone please help me? I would very much like to be able to talk-to-text effectively. Please detail out steps thoroughly.

Exact same problem. Works perfectly while not in the car, not at all while in the car. I primarily want it to work for the navigation app. The volume of my voice and the distance I hold the phone from my mouth does not seem to make any difference: if I am in the car and the car is running: it does not pick up my voice.
The Flex T9 keyboard is on sale this week on Amazon. That is the full version of the one the phone came with. It has the speech built in and some other features. I d/l it today, and it works great.

I installed Vlingo and it does all that I want it to and more. It works great in the car. It has a car mode that is fully automated. It does a pretty good job with voice recognition and you can personalize it. Best of all it's free. I would highly recommend this app. I am still learning all this app can do and I am more than impressed and satisfied so far. bw2982 you need to get this app.

Same here. I drive a pickup with a diesel engine and Google search didn't work at all if the engine was running. Vlingo works perfectly and has way more options. Great App.
I use Swype. It's not on the market. Just google Swype, go to their page, sign up for the beta and download. It's free.
I paid for flex t9, because I missed the free offer from Amazon. The voice recognition works great, but Swype works better with Swyping. Swype uses google voice search. Flex t9 uses nuance's dragon voice recognition - which is supposedly the best voice recognition available.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out WHY the mic would not show up on my keyboard after I installed the gingerbread keyboard and after ALL the settings were set for it to show up. I even checked the settings on my msg app but could not find one specifically for the keyboard (it never crossed my mind to hard press the text area). Thanks to you I now have the mic on my keyboard!!! It was getting irritating sending a text because I have rheumatoid arthritis and texting w/o the mic was becoming cumbersome. Thanks again!

I had the same problem as you, until today. Follow what y0bailey
said and you'll have the mic on your keyboard. It worked for me!

HOLY COW you people rock! I have been trying to figure out how to use text to speech on my phone for a while now. Kinda new to android, it's nothing like my PC.
