Default Ringer ringing when ringer switch is OFF

My Android smartphone has recently started to audibly ring while I have the (external-on-the-phone) ringer switch turned off. This is a BIG problem for me.

Two questions:
  1. is the physical ringer switch common to many (all?) Android devices or is it only on some Android phones? (my phone is a Motorola Cliq)
  2. how can one find out if the switch design is to disable the ringer in hardware (in which, I would guess, I have a defective device) or in software? And if in software, how might I test if it is in Android OS software, or the Motorola-added software, or something else?

Default I may have found the source of the problem

I've been troubleshooting this problem quite a bit lately and have finally traced it to an app I had installed on the phone. As it looks now, it has nothing to do with either Motorola Cliq particularities, nor to the Android OS.

I want to do a little more testing, but then I'll be back with a full report on what I found caused the problem.

By the way, initial appearances are that it is NOT aberrant behavior by the app, but rather normal behavior of the app given a certain set of (seemingly reasonable) user configuration settings.

Back soon.

Default FOUND: the source of the problem!

I have completed my testing. The errant app is Power Manager. It has the capability to turn the ringer "on" when the "Computer powered" profile is activated. However, when the app (quite properly) detects battery power, and therefore activates the "Battery powered" profile, it fails to allow the external ringer switch on the Motorola Cliq to take control back, even when the user-configured option within Power Manager is for the ringer to be "Normal" on the battery powered profile.

I have notified the app developer, xphonesoftware, with a request to fix this in a future release.

Hope this info is helpful to anyone else who runs into this problem. Write me a note if you want help on temporary workarounds.
