Default M120... thoughts?

Verizon just pushed out another update. Their website makes it seem like mostly ptt fixes. Anyone have any thoughts? I assume we're still SOL as far as rooting, but figured I'd ask anyways. Thanks!

I am late to the Commando game (new phone with M110 update) and missed the root window. This morning I see the push of M120. I am hoping they / Casio / verizon left a hole in M110 that can be found and rooted.

If anyone has details on M120 please share.

Not being able to root with M110 is driving me absolutely nuts. I hope someone crack the damn thing soon.

anyone who allows m120 to push should try every root method they can find on google and here on AF to help the crowd out

Ditto that!

Anyone know yet what's in it this time around? Seems like a few rapid fire updates for the commando. Me hopes for a hidden hole......

This might be a stupid question, and I apologize if it is because I don't own a Casio and come from a fairly long line of Samsung, LG, and HTC phones, but my son has been dying to root is Commando and just debloat it, maybe get screenshot and Titanium Backup and few other things...

I see there is a custom recovery for this device, if that is the case can't you just flash Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip (or similar SU zip package) to get root? That is what we did with most Samsung's once we got custom recovery and that was all there was too it.

Or am I just way off base here?

My wife let the update go.
I’m on Windows 8 (was the Release preview, but am now on the RTM version) and that’s bringing up a different problem for me, I can’t get the drivers to install properly/normally. The only thing that I can do is charge the phone, but I have to switch to “Media Sync” mode for that. All the other modes, “Mass Storage” or “Charge only” cause the phone to hang and restart.
If you know a fix for that Ill try what ever I can... ... ...

Dual boot with Windows 7 would be a good candidate.

I was a beta tester for Win 7 and the early driver support was spotty and the 64 bit version was REALLY spotty. I cant imagine Win 8 playing nice with all the hardware out there and phones have to be way down the priority list.

I will hang with Windows 7 as long as possible. XP pro (SP2) was a good & stable OS. I like the driver self install and detecting of Windows 7 but the load size is getting bigger and bigger. Linux is a nice option and I keep threatening to dabble with it on a spare box. maybe if I got up to speed with it I could help find a damn hole in my Commando!

Problem is that the bootloader is locked down, so until you get root, you can't flash anything. And even once it is rooted, there's no key combo to boot into recovery, you have to either do it from terminal on the phone or adb. So it's easy to totally brick the phone if something isn't done right. I came over from an original droid, and I can't believe how difficult Casio and Verizon chose to make this phone to root...

On another note, I let the update go through, and it's no worse than m110. I have a couple days off coming up and will try zergrush again and whatever else I can find... here's hoping!

Its for official alerts... weather, Amber alerts, etc. A couple weeks ago we had severe thunderstorms. My phone started screaming like crazy... after my heart attack, I checked and that alert app was up warning about the storms. I thought it was crap at first, but after that I'm cool with it...

For Windows 7 I went through several of the alpha versions and all along, even in to Beta versions the driver support was spotty as you say but the “vista” drivers were very easily “forced” into place.

Now with Win 8, it’s just a little different under the hood and forcing Vista or Win7 drivers is not taking too well.

Duel Boot isn’t an option seeing it’s a laptop. Our Home box is running Home server 2011, so that’s not much help either.
I’ll see if I can get what I need on one of my “work” Win7 laptop.

I'll ask again since people in here have the update. can you PLEASE attempt all the root methods posted in this forum and anywhere else you can find! if you have the update, stop asking for people to "hack" it for you and just try what tools are already available! hundreds, if not thousands, of people are waiting for someone to at least try this and no one is actually attempting!

I for one am trying to do as much as I can. That is what I was just discussing with JKH62 about.

I am on Windows 8 and cannot get past the driver incompatibility, if you know a way around that, then could you point me to it?

On Monday I will try to find a Windows 7 laptop, to try whatever I can.

Dude, I work 14 hour shifts. I have 3 days off starting Sunday. I'll give it a shot over my "weekend." Besides, I'd be pretty shocked if they suddenly reopened a hole with this update that was closed by a previous one. That'd be pretty sloppy.... oh wait, I forgot who we are dealing with... nevermind....

Zergrush is also a no-go.

It hangs at "waiting for device".

I tried it off USB ports off the computer MB and phone in charge mode with the proper debug setting and allow apps checked off.

Someone PLEASE crack this damn update!

I could have sworn waiting for device is usually a driver issue. When I had zergrush fail due to the hole being fixed it always quit with " hellions with blue flames". I could be mistaken though.... I had better success with my Linux box. When I get home tomorrow, I'll see if that's any different...

^you are correct elderlypunk, i didnt mean to come off so mad haha but alas! PROGRESS! things are looking up, if my commando wasnt stolen i'd be doing more but with no commando there isnt much i can do. but if 120 is rootable i'll consider giving up the razr maxx for one!

Using superoneclick with the zergrush exploit it runs until it stops at "waiting for device".

I am not sure what the update changed but I am certain there are more smart people around that can crack it if they want to. Great phone with a turd load.

I can confirm with Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.29.

Using Supreoneclick it established communication but stops when running the script.
If I try launching Zrg. from the batch file it really never gets rolling.

Default m120 issues

Moved from m110 to m120 on Thursday. Had two issue.

1) The post-swipe password pin screen went from the standard three column format of 1 2 3, 4 5 6, 7 8 9, OK 0 <DEL> to a two column format of 1 2, 4 5, 7 8, OK 0. Rebooting the phone returns to the normal three column pin pad for a bit but after a while, the rightmost column disappears again. Repeatable over several reboots. Workaround: turn off pin pad security.

2) Six text messages from Thursday night did not appear on my phone until Friday morning after I rebooted the phone to work around issue #1 again. Possible solution: update the PRL (*228). Maybe. Texts seem OK now. Just for good measure I also turned on the feature to receive SMS messages while roaming.

Some of the people who are using this phone need a phone that is durable. Some people have this phone as a work phone supplied to them by their employers.

If someone who has the commando could switch to any other fragile fancy phone just because it is "rootable", they probably didn't need the commando in the first place.

Cause really, this afternoon I had my commando propped up in the engine bay of my car for light as I was pulling the timing chain and gears. The phone was completely covered with grease, oil & crap. Just needed a quick wash off and was good as new. Can your Galaxy Nexus do that?

Well, yes I did need a rugged phone because I did have a rugged job. You go run, crawl, jump, climb, and shoot at stuff, you need a phone that can survive that. In rain, mud, sleet, and occasionally snow.

And people still post in the commando all things root section because obviously they are looking for a way to root their commando because they do desire features you can only get with a rootable device.

I just brought home a brand new HP DV7 laptop from work with Windows 7, So I'll be playing and trying what ever I can. I still have "work" to be doing with Windows 8 and driver comparability (not for cell phones) but I will do what ever I can in my off time. Lets hope it goes well.

The commando is a decent phone, but if you're looking for options when it comes removing bloat, modding, and maximizing performance, then this device is clearly not for you, and I'll gladly tell anyone who asks "how do I root my commando" to get a different phone. If software functionality outweighs your need for a phone that works underwater, then there's better options.

And how many months have passed with no exploit to attain root? Old exploits won't work, as they've been patched. As I suggested before, . Look to other devices running 2.3.3 and see if they have an exploit for their latest updates.

Maybe this is what you should be saying to others. Most people who get the Commando don't want software functionality over the physical attributes or else they would have gotten a different phone obviously.

Most people don't want to hear others say "Sell your POS and buy another phone" The commando is a kick ass phone I wouldn't trade it for the latest greatest phone.

I have to agree. I uninstalled all the updates to bloatware I don't want, disabled the auto updates in the marketplace, and moved a bunch of stuff to the sd card. Between that and using zeam launcher, performance is more than adequate on m120. I'd still *like* root, but the phone runs fine as it is now...

I never said it was a POS. It just came to the point where it was unreliable. (Edit: unreliable to me. Three warranty replacements and every replacement had issues. YMMV)
-phone rings- go to answer it -gz'one boot animation playing- ok, finally, who called me? G Damnit! It didn't save to the call log! Stupid random reboots!
Or -phone ringing- go to answer it, screen won't turn on. Keep pressing button. Come on screen, light up so I can answer!
And, gotta be up for work earlier than usual. I better set my alarm earlier. -wakes up- Oh, it's nice and sunny out....... wait a minute... it's not supposed to be nice and sunny at 5 am.... DOH!!!
I mean I'll take a fragile phone that's more reliable on the software side, than a nearly unbreakable phone that I can't answer, and auto-snoozes itself.
Casio G'zOne type S, Casio G'zOne Rock, Casio G'zOne Brigade, and Casio G'zOne Commando. Believe me, I'm a big fan of Casio and their G'zOne line. I just feel they let big red influence the software too much and the Commando had so much more potential that was never allowed to shine.

I need to remove some apps from my wife's Commando, does anyone know if there is a way to downgrade it to M080 so I can root it?

It's not possible. You might be able to find one on eBay. That's where I got my fourth commando. Three warranty replacements, and then one more because I didn't make sure the ports were closed before getting in the water

Now would be a good time to take a moment and review the site rules, before more serious consequences ensue. I've had to clean up a good deal of interpersonal comments that are irrelevant, unnecessary and distracting from the topic at hand.

Let me say this, no member is any more entitled to be in this, or any other forum than any other member. Thinking otherwise is incorrect. Stating it will only get you into trouble. Let's not do that.

If you see a post that incites, inflames or irritates you, report it and move on. The staff will take care of it. Don't reply, okay?

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread ....

I could use some help. Im pretty much a newbee at all this rooting stuff. i heard about it a couple of times and decided to finally look into it. obviously a bit too late. a couple questions?
Assuming someone has just found a hole in the new update:
Are there any downsides to rooting?
If in the case that i need customer support or to return the commando will i need to do anything to the phone to hide the fact that i rooted it?

Also my phones been shutting off a couple times a day for no reason and just turns right back on. Plus downloading music using Adownloader is extremely slow ever since the update. sometimes i need to reconnect the wifi in order for it to download anything. is it just my phone or is that common place. thanks

Nope sorry no one has found the hole in the system for 6+ months. = NO ROOT for M100+.

The commando is known for random restarts.

Not sure it has been tried. What about trying to spoof the patch as an update from the manufacturer. Have it come in over the wifi.

They have obviously programmed it to avoid any updates while connected, but they still need to update it on occasion. If you were to send it via the air waves, it may still have an open connection to it. To find the process, capture the data as the phone receives it.

Well, since it can't be rooted - yet - can anyone direct me to tips on how to modify it so I can get maximum efficiency and battery life?

Turn Wi-Fi off when not near Wi-Fi. Turn Wi-Fi on when at home.
Wi-Fi uses less juice when connected, but will continuously look for service when not connected.
I tried juice defender, the paid version, but results were barely noticeable and not worth the money I spent on it.
Someone else suggested turning off data while at work. But if you use your smartphone as a smartphone - email, Facebook, other online notifications, then that's just not an option. At least for me it wasn't. But if you only take your phone out every other hour, turn on data, check your stuff, then you might be good.
Zeam home launcher - very minimalistic launcher. No fancy transition animations. Uses less battery.
Cut down on your widgets. They use battery.

I also purchased a Mugen 1800 mAh battery for $80. It'll give you about 15% more juice than stock.

Other than that.... get a different phone. I loved the commando for its durability, but I'm sure you can read through this forum and find all the issues I've had with this phone.
Or get the commando 2
