Red face Image Backup Software Recommendations for Desktop/Laptop

I have tried Acronis before, and it was very thorough, and in depth regarding the settings and such. I ended up having issues with daily incremental backups and running out of space for some reason, with minimal changes to my computer and data being backed up.

Can anyone suggest a great program to back up my laptop image? I have a 1TB external drive and I have no issues backing up to there/I would prefer if the backup was on my internal hard drive, but the external would be a nice backup in case the HD takes a real dump.

I have lost lots of data TWICE due to overheating (HP design flaw) - and this last time I could not access the internal drive.

Programs can be replaced, but pictures can't.
Thanks
Nick

Clonezilla is what I use for images. For stuff such as pictures ever once in a while I burn some to a CD, but lately I just use my external HDD.

Macrium Reflect is awesome for making images and it's free For data backup, I use the Windows 7 backup utility (it's actually really nice) that dumps to my openfiler SAN.

I also use Windows Backup. Once a month to my external.

Clonezilla is also free.

I use Mozy and Carbonite for online backups. I also do a monthly image using Windows 7's utility. In all reality though, if I have a major crash I would probably just start from scratch. I like a clean start every once in while.
