Default Creating a website

Hey how's it going? Not exactly sure where this goes at but I am hoping to get advice on the best way to create a website.

I am looking to make my own book forum with a chat room for members and I have been looking at ning.com and grou.ps but i am not sure if there are better(and cheaper alternatives)
I was told to check out Phpbb if i wanted to make a forum but i wanted to know from Android Techies, the best way to go about making a great forum & chatroom

Micah

Well, have you done any website designing yourself?

You'll want to at least the following regardless:
HTML
CSS
Javascript
PHP

And you'll probably be needing a database too (MySQL).

It'll be pretty tough, especially if you are doing the forum and chatroom from scratch. I've seen a lot of sites using phpbb, but I haven't ever dabbled into forums myself (besides as a user).

Hope that helps.

Define chatroom, are you looking for a chatbox of sorts on your forum's index, or a separate page with a chatroom?

Either way, if you think you'll have a fairly large amount of members, you should probably avoid both of those as they'll consume large amounts of resources. An IRC channel would be a better choice in that case.

Regarding forum software, I would look into MyBB, but I'm a tad biased against phpBB.

Well, I'd probably say to start out small. That's key. Get your fundamentals down first. And use valid code. Use a HTML/CSS validator, and follow good practices with PHP.

Also, when you get down to it, plan things out. It works much better to have a definite plan before jumping into anything.

I originally went with Ning.com when i made this post here on AF

and this what i came up with
Enter The Fayz - "It's Just a Fayz"
i managed to get 49 users in 4 days(Kind of proud of myself lol)

But i didn't like what it offered so I decided to go with Spruz.com and this is where I am going with it
Enter The Fayz

Basically, I'd like a forum(Similar to AF) where the members can post about whatever the forum category calls for and i'd also like a chatroom(chatbox)

My thing is this.
10 GB Monthly Transfer and 1,000 MB of storage space for 4.95 a month is what i originally was going to do.

they also Have
100 GB monthly transfer and 10,000 MB of storage space for 19.95

So which is best?
Just for a forum/chatroom type of thing.

Right now, the community is small

Start small and increase as you need it is the rule I follow when doing websites. What host are you looking at going with?

Personally I'm not a fan of those sites, subdomains (yoursite.theirsite.com) looks unprofessional, even if you are just getting a feel for everything.
