You will face driver problems in XP .If XP drivers are available for your netbook then well and good else you are stuck to Win 7 .
To make a USB image you will need win to flash or the official Windows 7 USB DVD download tool .

I think you misunderstood. She is asking if she can make a USB install of Win7 from an image on an XP machine.

You will need the iso image file for Windows 7 and you will need a tool to burn the image to a USB flash drive like the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. You can run this utility from either XP, Vista or Win7

You have to create a bootable USB drive from a borrowed a copy of a Windows 7 install DVD. Here are the instructions.

Or you can borrow a portable USB DVD drive, provided the netbook will recognize it without special drivers.

Without the DVD this becomes much more difficult. You'll need a copy from somewhere...

Probably gotta borrow it from a friend, like lunatic said.

(And now with this flash drive, you could try linux again (might wanna give it some time))

Personally, yes. You could use a tool similar to Unetbootin (which will burn an ISO imagefile (linux dvd/cd) to a usb drive.

I'd recommend either Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Both are very user friendly and have live environments.

When you boot into the USB device, it'll ask how you want to boot, the default should be fine. It'll say something like, boot into default or something. It's pretty simple, I forget the exact wording, but it should be pretty basic.

Then, you can try it out. It won't change any files on your computer, and if you want you can install by clicking on the "Install" desktop icon. Then you have a 15-20minute setup / install process, then you're good to go!

Good luck.
