Default Oneiric Ocelot is out...

If anyone is interested, Ubuntu 11.10 - Oneiric Ocelot is out. I'm going to give it a whirl later in the week.

Wow, I didn't realize the name was Lisa. That's a bit awkward, don't ya think?

I guess it's better than Lorraine.

Gave 11.10 a quick try via booting USB and all seems good. Detected everything, wireless worked right off the bat though still suggested proprietary drivers. Unity ran fine, it didn't suggest ATi Catalyst drivers ...wonder if that is because its running off USB? I'll play more after class

I've been testing the beta version for a while and it's a definite improvement over 11.04. LightDM is real nice too.

Cool cool, it really is too bad that I just downloaded Mint 11 this week, guess I'll wait for 12 to install....
And all the distros always show up when I'm no where near a high speed connection...

11.10, I'll be seeing you next week.

11.04 left a bad taste in my mouth. Hope this is an improvement.

Disappointing, when on wifi I lock up so bad I have to do a hard reset. Broadcom 4313 WiFi / Bluetooth 3.0 combo in the laptop. If I boot wired all is good. So I also tried enabling the 3rd party / proprietory driver and shortly after, more lockups. Both happen regardless running in USB or off the HDD.

Made a 25GB image of my HDD before attempting this, looks like Win7 is back on as of this afternoon.

Last 2 times I tested the beta from 11.04 and also fresh install, I couldnt boot.

After the first update I sacrificed all my data so won't be trying this until I have somewhere to backup an image of 11.04

I've been running 11.10 for a few days now and I have to say it's quite nice. Unity isn't too bad once you get used to it but Fluxbox beats it hands down

Hurray! I have 11.10 working with wireless and 3 VMs (2008 Server x 2 and Server Core) I need for school. BTW, I switched laptops with the other half, she now has the Acer AO722 with the C-50, 2GB RAM and I have the Acer 5733Z with the P6100 and 4GB. I'm glad i gave it another try. 8)

With win7 as the host and 2 win2008 server VMs I was using 3.7GB. It was doable, just. Now with Linux as the host an 2x 2008s running I am at about 2.6GB. I could run a 3rd now if needed.

I run 11.10 on my Studio XPS 7100, I have had only a good experience with it.

so did no one have any issues upgrading from 11.04 at all? I'm still sceptical and as I haven't a backup solution currently, I'm not sure about it.

I did a clean install. The previous 11.04 had issues on this laptop, 11.10 is stable so far. Surprisingly, I'm liking Unity as well, 380MB used when first logged in.

Grab a copy of System Rescue CD and image your partitions. System Rescue CD is a Live CD and ships with Part Image, I use that to image my partitions. If the upgrade doesn't go as planned you can simply use System Rescue CD to restore your images and the computer will be returned to the same state it was when it was imaged - it's an awesome backup strategy as well. Imaging my paritions takes about 20 minutes and restoring is a bit quicker. I have three identical computers. I install Ubuntu on one computer, use Part Image to image it then use those images to install Ubuntu on the other two computer. It's much faster than installing Ubuntu from the Live CD.

However, I recently let the Upgrade Manager in Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade to 11.10 and I haven't had a single problem.

My desktop upgraded fine from 11.04, but my laptop had trouble so I wound up doing a clean install.

Thanks all.

Yeah I need to image but I only have NAS as a medium which is great to back up to but not always good to restore. Plus the image will be 200GB which over my network will take an age.

I do need a usb hdd though...

Thanks everyone for the answers. Not sure where my concern came from. I think someone mentioned some sort of unity incompatibility on the beta. I couldn't even get the beta to run on a clean install

Review: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot review - Damn good

Not me, but I tend to go here for my linux reviews. 9.9/10, which is pretty impressive. I'm giving it (11.10) a try this weekend.

Though, if I was in charge of the name, it'd be something like "oceanic octet", and the wallpaper would be something like "192.168.1.1" written in the sand (remember how they used to have those awesome pics of animals as the default wallpaper?!? I miss that...).

Well I didn't risk putting 11.10 on the old Tosh, but as my fiance has uni work to do so I didn't have much access to it.

So got a "new" laptop and slung it on there. Looking sharp and feels snappy (although the laptop is much better).

Can't tell for sure but looks like Intels turbo boost isn't being utilised which is a shame. I trawled the web as to where to check for evidence but everything points to the 2.67ghz being max when it should go to 3.2...

Other than that, I miss the theme customization option in appearance but I do like it a lot
