If you have followed my previous thread I decided to do some updating to my older desktop. I opted for a minor upgrade, double my ram, get an SSD and go 64 bit.

Well, the ram did not work, need to RMA the stuff. Windows 7 64bit needs a lot of updates which fails to configure and I really don't feel like troubleshooting something that should work

So, now I am thinking I am just going to put the old hard drive back in with the 32bit version of windows and everything else on it. Format the SSD and install Ubuntu linux on it (just to try it) and start saving some cash for a different upgrade, A desktop Mac. Yeah. I said it. I am growing tired of window.

I figured a Linux Distro and windows 7 will allow me to dual boot. I also know some Android hacking can be done in the Linux box. I can't totaly burn the bridge with windows yet but I think I can make a couple steps toward doing that.

Should I go 32bit or 64bit Ubuntu linux?

No reason not to use 64bit, running Ubuntu 11.10 right now to see if my netbook can handle it. np atm.

I downloaded the 32bit ISO and running the live CD.

I seriously think I am going to install 11.10 on my SSD wiping out the 64bit windows and plug my old HDD back in and just dual boot my machine

My only comment would be to also look at Linux mint. In my opinion it is much better than Ubuntu. The internals are pretty much identical, but mint is a lot nicer with gnome 3 or cinnamon.

One last ditch attempt at this to see if I missed anything before I throw the switch.

I have a crucial 128gb SSD. I installed windows 7 64bit on it, the install went fine. The problems is coming from the updates. The updates download and install when I shut down the PC but when I boot up, it says, configuring updates, stays at 0 for about 10 minutes then says, failed, reverting then dumps me to my desktop and when I power off, it installs the updates again.

Could I have missed something when I installed the SSD? Is there some setting I should have set on the drive? A setting in windows 7 I missed or what?

I would recommend a full reinstall. Sometimes a borked install will cause updates to fail.

Further to that, I'd always recommend drawing up a shortlist of 3-5 distros to try before settling on one for the long haul. A lot of people just start with Ubuntu though, then go onto something else a bit down the line...
