Could I use an old sat dish to focus n pick up free WiFi better?

Get a long USB extension cable n put a $15 usb WiFi adapter
Where the sat center receivers are and tune in Tokyo so to speak?

PC is 2ft from a window, seen 5-8ft extension cables on rotten-eggs

I'm going to say yes. I mean, RF is RF right...? My guess is it would be something like the whole 'cantenna' thing. I don't know what you'd need to do in order to pick up the proper frequencies, because I am assuming the satellites don't operate at 2.4GHz or 5GHz.... but I don't know that for sure.

If you figure it out, post back - I'd sure like to know if this is possible..

Well the dish just bounces rays that it collects into small center area concentrating them ehy?

Only thought I had was to put aluminum foil tape on the backside of the dish to make it more solid so less can get through.

They did that on that redneck rocket science show to pick up radio waves from space better.

Cheap WiFi dongle will do all the “tuning”

Other wise I gotta drive down the road n park at the senior center like everyone else to use it and get decent signal strength to really use it

Please keep in mind that the wifi you are about to leech off of is not free. Someone is paying for that bandwidth and you are streaming it from them. It's also illegal and Carries significant penalties. Please rethink earth you are trying too accomplish here. Is a 30/mo internet connection really worth it?

Its free public WiFi at the senior center down the road, anyone can use it, the parking lot always has folks sitting there just to use it, even the police sit down there to screw off online when bord. [course im sure they are just watching for speeders, but internet useage might say different.]

A note of caution about using this open unsecured wifi, is that everything you do will be visible to all, unless you're using a secure VPN or proxy.

No, anyone cannot use it. It is meant for people who are physically inside the building that are actually using the center for what it's for. It's meant for customers/clients or whatever you want to call it. Anyone else using it is stealing. Theft is theft.

"Free public wifi" is just that - free and publicly available. It may well be a community-based initiative, for all anyone knows.

The usage terms and conditions will show up when connecting to that wi-fi router (proxy server message, if any, like an airport or starbucks hotspot that says blah, no warranty, blah, coffee, blah, x hour limit and danger). Yeah, we want photos of that USB wi-fi adapter on the dish!!! And speedtest numbers too!!! Have fun!!

I love how people with rooted n hacked phones which is against their "TOS", have a problem with me using public access WiFi paid for by the city, which we pay taxes to for such public services.

pot meet pot [the kettle refused to be apart of this post]

And id bet money the hi speed is donated like they do with the schools, so everyone on buckeye cable system is paying for it. 2+2= We pay city taxes and have buckeye cable.

Just because you "don't know" does not justify taking it anyway.

On July 26th 2010, the Library of Congress ruled that it was not illegal to root or jailbreak a cell phone. Rooting your phone is not against the law and does not break your ToS.

Found this,

http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/15/how-to-build-a-wifi-biquad-dish-antenna/
"Why? With just a handful of cheap parts, a salvaged DirecTV dish and a little soldering, we were able to detect access points from over 8 miles away. Using consumer WiFi gear we picked up over 18 APs in an area with only 1 house per square mile."

Seem to go I don't want to say over board, but they went all out to bring the sgnal down to the device inside.

I want to put the device on the dish, and only need a USB extension cable

So I guess the dish will work for collecting signals

Neither does it justify accusations of stealing and calls for the topic to be closed.

Bottom line: no Site Rules have, to the best of my knowledge, been broken therefore it will remain open. If anyone disagrees with the decision then please take it up with Phases (as my 'boss') so as not to take the thread off-topic.

Also read one a few years back about using pringles cans to get free WiFi over a mountain [they had the thing on the top of a tree], but they did the same thing, they were just making a long attenna for a network card thats inside.

Im thinking the device on the dish is better, easier.

I got two of these and they work well
Rosewill RNX-EasyN1 Wireless-N 4.0 Dongle
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166041

but Im get one of these so I get better signal in the kitchen through 4 walls when I use WiFi from my cell in office.
I can play with it too.

RF is not RF. Look at antennas designed for LF, HF, and Microwave. Very different designs. It's all about the math and laws of physics.
