Windows 8 Extremely Frustrating

I ended up downloading the consumer preview I had been keeping a open mind about it. The short time I played with it in the past it seem to run far faster then my Windows 7 setup.

After spending a day with it I feel like beating my head into a wall. Metro has to be the worse idea in the history of computers.

Metro would not be so bad if it was a little easier to

Close Programs
Desktop and Metro programs where interchangeable (what I am seeing now there all separate settings one does not carrier over to the other).

Seems like everything is default to use some kinda of metro app that is hard to close and takes up the entire screen (no alt tabbing). I have no idea what they where thinking but its painfully obvious this was not designed for desktops.

I really hope they have everything worked out before the October release or we have the second coming of Windows ME on our hands.

Hey now there, I was a WIndows ME beta tester and once you knew how to work around its bugs, it was to easy to fix.
Just reinstall it, and 99% of all settings and updates stay put but would fix it.

My first PC came with ME haha I didn't really notice a whole lot wrong with it, although I was like 11 at the time.

You're right metro "isn't" designed for Desktops its designed to bridge the gap between tablets an PCs (this is what I see at least) Getting users familiar with their windows OS for tablets can help with sales.
About 4 years ago I had a teacher predict that soon they will decrease the number of desktop and laptops in production and mostly use tablet devices for common everyday computing. MS could be shooting for that

I still have yet to try Windows 8 although I have had the preview for quite sometime... never got it to install on virtual pc so I didn't mess with it, but from what I have seen it looks like it will take some time for me to get use to the Metro.

pbf I think you might be right and I dont understand what Microsoft is thinking thought. Either Metro is going to be a complete hit or its going to fall so flat it will take years to recover.

I talked to my friend who is head of a major grocery chains IT department. He has been playing with metro him self. He just does not see how it could work in a office environment.

We both agree with the extremely step learning curve Windows 8 presents most company's are going to over look it to avoid having to retrain employee's.

There is no way to just hop on a Windows 8 and know how to navigate it as well as a Windows 95-7 machine.

The other thing is the average non tech person is not going to like the change what so ever. Special when they have to learn a dozen + keyboard shortcuts or buy a special keyboard and mouse. I think we will see tons of people switch to Apple or they will keep 7.

Relax folks . . . Metro will be OK after you download and install SP-1 through SP-46 and replace the GUI with WinStep Extreme.

I dual boot Linux & Win7, I've tried the Win8 Consumer preview. On a touchscreen Metro is really effective. with Keyboard & Mouse it's a disaster. hen you get to the 'normal' desktop it's back to win3.1 days to launch apps. If I need win8 apps, I'll wait until they're ported to WINE. Win 8 Consumer preview does not play nicely with VMWare or VirtualBox. I've not tried it in QEMU yet tough.

And remember gang . . . the release you all downloaded is not the final shipping product. Perhaps some of the bugs and other curious behaviors will be fixed when MS releases the final version.

I must remind people, a beta product is often buggy and you should not damn MS for a crappy release of a "buggy" OS. Things will be different when released officially.

I have beta tested many products and they are always better when the official release drops.

As I recall, there was/is debate about personal computers and Windows 8. Something about no longer being able to use any other OS because of the BIOS and other things that are designed specifically, to prevent installing any other OS.

This applied to new computers not home built efforts. I would cite the specifics, but I am lazy today.

My decision will be based on one specific factor: does it help or hinder my ability to earn a dollar? I can run MS-DOS/DR-DOS and Microsoft Word for DOS and still make money.

I will not upgrade my work laptop because the system I have now, is vastly more computing power than I could ever use. I am thinking about buying a home server to hold my music and pictures, but It will likely run Windows 98.
