Default Best Graphics Cards Worth Getting

I have a similar thread, but this question is solely about graphics cards.

ATM I have a ~800/$1200 budget.

I have been looking at the MSI GTX 570 at 240 on Advancedtechnologies.co.uk ( ODnt know how much I trust it lol )

Whilst doing some research I found that the GTX 570 isnt being sold on dabs.com, so I researched other models , I have come across the following

GTX 670 at around 300-340 , benchmarked 2nd place.

Radeon 7950 at 340-62 , which benched 6th

For comparison , the GTX 570 , at 240 , pulled in a 7th place
and the 560 Ti , was 13th.

PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards

Question is , am I better off with either the 670 or 7950 over the 570?

and then could I OC the 570 or 7950 to get 670 performance?

Obviously the cost will increase, but if that means I can play intensive games for like 5 years, so be it.

Other specs :

i5 IB 3750K
Corsair Vengence 8GB RAM
I Think Thermaltake 850W PSU
Asus P8z77 V-PRO Mobo.

Any help will be appreciated, asI am getting confused the more research I do

But I dont want a card thats only good because its cheap, and for its price its "pretty" good. I'd rather pay a lil bit more to have a better card that will serve me longer.

I'm using an EVGA GTX 570 HD, it's run everything at very good framerates and high/ultra graphics. Skyrim, SC2, GW2, no stutter, no lag. Awesome card.

I'm currently running 2 x 5770's in Xfire, they run OC'd a little better than a stock 560, right now.

However the 560 is an awesome card, especially if you can OC that sucka, i would suggest to get that, for the price, then just OC it up some, hopefully you have good airflow in your case

Some reviews of that say it overheats alot. The 660Ti is £10 more than a 570 and comes with Bl2

They probably don't have it ventilated well enough. It's a BIG card.

I have pm'd a few guys about this (sorry!) but I've got time now is so I might as well post it...

Story so far :

I was gonna get a Asus 560ti to play all my games, but decided for £50 more, I could get a 570 which should last longer.

Then I found my msi 660Ti for the same price as the 570 but with BL2. However, I recently read that msi modified the pwm to take way to much voltage which could shorten its life. I have decided to return it asap.

Now I still need to get a gpu, and currently looking at a evga 660Ti for £250 or a 670 £300 (both with borderlands) or 670 ftw for £330, all from PC World.
Question is : would a 670 be overkill and a waste of money?

Buying anything from PC World is a waste of money. Here is a Gainward GTX 670 on ebay from the reputable dealer Scan Computers for 279 with free next day delivery 2GB Gainward GTX 670, 28nm, PCIe 3.0 (x16), 6008MHz GDDR5, GPU 915MHz, Boost 980 4260183362555 | eBay
Or the same one I have, from the same firm for a mere 221.
3GB XFX Radeon HD 7950 Double D, 5000MHz GDDR5, GPU 800MHz, DVI/DVI/HDMI/mDP 778656059085 | eBay

I assume it's because of the customer service??

I have heard that scan's is good , but hopefully I won't have any problems.

Plus I can get a 10% discount at PC World.

Lolz I could write a book on PC worlds "customer service". Like when they repeatedly refused to repair my PC saying " I didn't have a cover plan" then when my bank statement came in and 9 went to PC World I asked them why I was paying them 9? "Oh thats your cover plan". Never again.

I think I'll get it from Scan ? or Amazon....

Anyway , turns out I was charged for the extra 660Ti ebuyer sent me , so I am not 250 up

So I'll have around 350 left to get the monitor , keyboard , mouse and GPU.

Im thinking :

Microsoft Comfort 5000/ Logitech MK520
Asus/Samsung/BenQ/Dell ~23" 1080p monitors

and to fit in that 350 budget , I could only get a 560Ti....

Advantages of this include a better screen at the start , and when I need to upgrade , there could be something better and cheaper out there.

I don't know whether to leave the monitor for now ( I have a 17" 720p ) which will allow me to afford a 660Ti or even a 670FTW ...

This allows me to get the best I can right now , although it seems kinda pointless playing on such a small monitor....but I'd rather not be switching around with GPU's....

( This post is kinda me just talking typing out loud on the forum to myself but feel free to add your opinions)

Or, I could get the monitor and run on integrated graphics for now...

Or just get both...

Where are some good places to pick up a GPU, that has good customer service if I need to RMA.

So far I've seen Scan, - Amazon, and CcL online.

Obviously not PC World.

Novatech are a good supplier and if you go to ebay abd search for "novatechltd" they have a department which sells "refurbished" gear though I think the refurbishment just amounts to damaged packaging. I have bought lots of gear from them and it is always perfect. If you go to ebay and search for "XFX 7950" a firm called Ballicom has one for just 218 - an absolute steal.

Edit* Here's a really sweet setup for 2000 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultimate-Gaming-Computer-Inc-Triple-3-Screen-s-16Gb-XFX-7950-3Gb-2500k-4-5GHz-/110963654129?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopPCs&hash=item1 9d5f2fdf1

I've found a 670 ftw on scan for £303...

Should I be throwing money at my screen, or continuing my original plan of buying other parts first and seeing what happens...?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. It really depends on how important the GPU is to you (appearance and FPS and what you play).

re: 670, I don't know if that's a good deal or not (American here, don't know UK pricing)

Question was whether 300 for that 670 was a really good deal or not.

For some reason in America it would be around 250.

The reason it is much more over here is that we pay heavy tax including VAT at 20%. I would guess our import duty is higher too.

That'd be my guess. US prices do not include tax(es).

I'll reply in this thread, but is a 670 really not worth it over a 660?

Would be evga 670 FTW at £300 vs evga( I think) 660 Ti at £225.

There's also a 660Ti ftw with extra fans for 240.

I recanted in the other thread; the 670 is closer to the 680 than the 570 was to the 580.

Then again, the 680 really isn't that much more than the 670 and a 7% difference in performance** can mean the difference between 60 FPS and 30 FPS (<60 FPS = 30 FPS w/vsynch, which is annoying to run without) on games that you play.

I don't like the reference cooler (noisy, less effective, far more difficult to clean); I like Gigabyte's 3-fan setup (or 2 for the x60).

**That 7% was with unoptimized, beta drivers around Kepler's release; there have been many performance increases from driver updates since, likely making the 670 and 680 more divergent.

You didn't really answer my question....
There's a 670 FTW signature with fans not a blower for £310

There's 660Ti at £225 and a signature version for £240

Looking on the passmark benchmark list, the 670 is second with 5,236 and the 660Ti is sixth with 4,696, and the price difference is like 50 dollars, i am assuming the 660Ti could probably get the job done for what you are looking for, but if you want to ultimately future proof, like get 2+ years out of this card then go for the 670.

I would go with the 670 for the price difference; for 70, the performance gain is worth it. (The smaller memory bus really chokes FPS.)

Personally, I like the fans over the blower for maintenance but my cases (Antec Twelve Hundred and Nine Hundred-Two) handle airflow swimmingly. If your case doesn't breathe quite as much, then the blower would be better (just don't miss cleaning it regularly as it clogs far easier). Of course, how much you use it also matters (my GPUs are folding--100% util.--when I'm not using them for gaming/vid-watching).

I was kinda hoping around 3-5 before needinh am upgrade. :-P

@rolo I have a Cooler Master Storm Enforcer. It's a 500x300x200 ( I think) mid tower with a 200mm front fan and a 120mm back exhaust fan.

I removed the ssd cage so the psu cables are as low as possible and the hdd cage for better airflow.

I may get a cpu fan and / or a 200mm top fan.

Not sure whether to get the one with fans or not....

With nvidia's Adaptive V Sync, if you get below 60fps, it turns it off....

So instead of 60,60,30,30
You'll get 60,60, 58,57...

(As is my understanding...)

That is correct and I have tried it but I absolutely loathe tearing; it's more distracting than 30 FPS.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over the GPU fan types. My 580 fans make a noise at high-speed; I'm hoping a good cleaning will fix it; otherwise, they need replacing (if I want to run them that fast, which I doubt I will, even folding 24/7). My 260 blower still works well and those fans do seem more resilient.

I bought our GTX260s Aug 2008 and replaced them with 580s Feb 2011 (2-1/2 yrs) and they were a nice upgrade. I'll be looking at GK114-based cards (Kepler refresh, GTX780) probably 2013Q2-Q3, ~2-1/2 yrs. from getting the 580. The 660Ti performs almost identically to my 580 and the 670/680 aren't worth the cost for such a small upgrade.

To just clarify ... you meant the 670 isn't a worthy upgrade for you ?

So would the fan type on the GPU make any difference worth it?

Also, when I said I want my GPU to last around 3-5 years at the max ... I meant before needing low graphics/ being unable to use it .)

Also , my monitor came today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, for me, it isn't worth upgrading at this time--and I even thought of just getting the wife a 660Ti or better and putting her 580 with mine but that just feels like sending good money after bad but I haven't ruled it out (I'll see what's what after Kepler refresh is released if I can't wait until Maxwell).

My point is to plan on buying about every other generation and to buy top-tier (x70 or better) and you should be good until Maxwell refresh.

What kind of games do you play and at what details?
Just before a upgrade, roughly what would you have to play on, on the older card...?
Not sure if that makes sense...

E. G.
If you have a 470, playing on high graphics.... You might upgrade to a 680, but by that time, the 470 would only manage low graphics etc...

Personally I am playing Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings with my XFX Radeon 7950. Runs sweet as a nut.

At the moment:

Guild Wars 2 (high settings sans reflections, which will kill any card)

Skyrim (maxed + AO in control panel)

Diablo III, maxed + AO

Yeah... I think I'll get the 670 signature as 10 quid isn't much for the cooler temps and easier cleaning as you said.
I'll think about upgrading when I have to move to medium graphics... And then make the move when I get to low :-D

How much longer do you reckon a 670 will last compared to a 660Ti?

Like the jump from high to medium / low graphics...

The Prophetron 5000 says 6-18 months longer.

See my post in the EVGA thread of yours, same topic.

I would consider a cheaper/discounted 580 over the 660Ti (same performance). Would you buy a 580 right now? If not, then don't buy the 660Ti.

Here the 580 is the same price as the 680.

Now this question is getting ridiculous.
Found a pre owned 580 here :

How much better is a 670 over a 580
- in performance and on longevity.

The evga 670 is £290, ftw is £30p, ftw sig 2 is 310.
The 660Ti is £225.
The 580 is around £200-240

I'm less freaked out as I hadn't seen that comment, or you.

I see what you mean. I probably should. But like, I subconsciously just want the best card available, and my brain (damn you brain) is thinking about the best price/performance.

What's the spec of the system it's going into e.g. CPU, memory, mainboard? The best-performing GPU on the market will still perform like a three-legged dog with arthritis if the rest of the rig doesn't allow it the necessary bandwidth.

Better to build a balanced system that satisfies your needs now, than blow money on something that will need more expenditure further down the line to justify itself.

95% of the time, your GPU will be the bottleneck (100% at maxed settings).

And overclock the K!

When you build your PC, I suggest you don't install Windows 8 on it.

I don't really know what this means Well , I know what it means , but , even with a 580/660Ti, there's not gonna be much of a bottle neck , no?
