Default How to upgrade a laptop

My laptop is getting old and slow. I was wondering if there are ways I can use to speed things up?
I don't know much on the laptop side, but could I get a bigger hard drive, more ram, change CPU etc?

You can probably "wipe" it and maybe update to Windows 7/8 if possible if your computer is only a few years old should gain you alot without the expense of a hard drive unless you just want to replace it anyway (bigger/faster?).

Has it ever been fast enough for your demands?
Enough memory?

how old is the laptop? if its older than three years replacement may be a better option as you'll sink as much to "upgrade" as replace. Manufactures make it fairly simple to change / add memory and change hdd's. CPU and GPU's are a bit more involved depending on the Manufacturer. My philosophy is if its going to cost me more to upgrade than replace its best to replace it or if its going to be over 200 dollars for me to upgrade it.

What notebook, what specs.

The replacement option is likely going to be the best. As was mentioned before.

Sorry, forgot extra info :

Hp G70
Intel Core 2 duo 2GHz
3GB ram
140GB HD
Nvidia 9200m gpu
17" 1440x900 screen

It's a nice laptop, although a bit bulky. I find it a bit laggy and slow, but it's also my main gaming machine at the moment.

I only thought of upgrading it as to inject new life.... Or I could get a nexus 7?

I don't think GPU on that can be swapped. And even if it could the hunt and cost could be a major pain.

The GPU is likely the bottleneck with gaming.

This.

Re-installing Windows won't cost you anything apart from your time. Then the laptop will be performing as if it was new. Do all the updates, then just install the software that you actually need. It's a known fact that Windows can slow down over time, especially if you've been installing a lot of software.

Sounds like your bottleneck is your HDD. Assuming that mobo has an extra sata||. A small ssd for your o.s. And freq. Used programs will make big difference. (along with fresh windows install / minimal software / services.

What is the exact model number? You said HPG70 but each G70 has like 3-5 numbers/letters on the end to specify exact model (G70-XXXXX)

Do you have the OEM windows disc? Like mikedt said Id start with re installing windows.

Also like n0ve said you should try an ssd. Even if you don't have an extra sata slot you could go with a 128gb ssd for $90.

Disabling windows Aero is also a small boost in performance since your laptop would no longer need to keep up with that demand.

Don't slow it down with virus software like Norton or McAfee try Avast its free, its the best i've ever used(i install it on all my new builds and when I'm doing virus malware removal for people) and its light on background resources.

Feel free to send me an inbox message, and I will give you contact info for my business. Any AF member I try my best to make time for free of charge, we'll connect remotely to your system, run a few tests, and since you mentioned its your gaming machine. There are many services that are going to need to be disabled, as well as software minimization via Windows OEM ( not your manufacturer's restore disc, filled w/ bloatware just like cell phones ;\ ) (I used to be a hardcore gamer myself, Everquest, WoW, days without sleep lol.) I/we(other forum members) are here to help as always so, stay in touch and I'll help get you gaming to full potential.

Alright , cheers everyone!

Once my desktop is all set up , I'm probably not gonna use my laptop as much but anyway :

It's a HP G70120EA, running Avira AntiVIR and PC Tools firewall.
