Default learning proficiency

Hello
Im not exactly how to word this but here goes. Are there any resources someone would reccomend to anyone whos looking for gaining a good grip on computer basics? My goal is to eventually enroll in school for a computer security related major but right now its able to happen. Whenever I google the subject I usually end up with sites trying to sell me something. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

I assume you're using a PC with Windows, and not an Apple Mac?

Here's probably a good place to get started...
Windows Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows
Microsoft's own help and tutorials.

I'd recomend Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte's Security now podcast.
GRC*|*Security Now! Episode Archive**

now, they are a bit long, but the archive is amazing. From Cryptography, to networking, web fundamentals and even how digital computing works from first principles its all covered, (transcripts are available if you like to read rather than listen).

Either start at the current one, or go back through the archive and pick topics that interest you. Its time well spent.
