I might join this, put my processors six cores to work for a good cause. I highly doubt I use more then three at any given time anyway. >.>

Nice. What CPU model is this? Sounds like you could be a major contributor.

The AMD Phenom II X6, beast of a processor for only $170. I prefer it over the Intel hexa core because of the Cool N' Quiet feature, that way it only uses however many cores I need and doesn't burn itself out in no time flat.
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX

Probably going to hold off a few days, with Black Ops coming out tomorrow (midnight for me) I'm going to be playing that religiously for a few days.

I just joined up. i7 930 @ 3.8GHz, 6GB 1600MHz, and a GTX470 SC.

I might run the GPU client in addition but for now I'm just using the SMP client.

The GPU clients out-perform the SMP client by a country mile on my X4 965.

For Nvidia cards I recommend the GPU3 (v6.32) beta, with the switch added to force recognition as a Fermi device if required. This works even with my old 8800GT to ensure it only processes the new WUs which (a) are more reliable and (b) offer slightly more points.

I just joined the team. I've known about folding for a while. Used to have my 9800GT working on it but the wife got that machine in the divorce. Lol. Now it's my little 3 year old laptop pecking away at the work units. Better than not helping at all I guess. great forum. You guys have helped my Android to be everything it can be. Rock on.

Sweet! I'm joining. I leave my computer up all the time so it might as well do something useful. AMD athlon XP 5600+ Dual Core 2.80GHz.

Will try to do with GPU too (It just died and i'm awaiting my new one so i'm running on the bad integrated at the moment)

Still keep meaning to do this. Just built a rig and old one (2.4 quad w/ 9500gs 512) sits in spare room always on plus my new one is 6 core OC'ed to 3.7ghz and a 5850 gddr5. Am a little worried about over heating though (even without doing this). Sticking with stock fan/heatsink and this is my first OC'ing endeavour

My 5850 (Sapphire VaporX) is sitting at 58C right now while folding, and that's with a PCI soundcard partially-obstructing its fan intake.

I don't run a CPU client; my X4 965 barely made 400ppd using the SMP client which imo wasn't worth the additional stress/heat.

58c is kinda high ain't it? How long does it sustain that? And my upstairs computer is a x4 965 as well, you saying it was pointless to do it on that?

I've been subscribed to this thread since like June or something so i don't forget about it and am still wondering what the negatives might be

It's only ~16C above the idle temp, and it will do that 24/7 if I let it. I've seen 63C after an extended gaming session so it's not anything unusual. Heck, my old 8800GT sits at 82C (on a bench!) as it is folding constantly.

Compared to the ppd for the GPU alone, yes. The CPU client reduced the throughput of the GPU one by more than it added itself. Plus I didn't find it especially reliable, failing more projects than it completed either due to the core crashing or premature EOFs during calculation.

Huh, well my x4 965 rig only has a 9500gs which was at best a economy card when it was new 3 years ago. Might not mess with that pc at all then

I'm on board..... I think? It must take a while for everything to register. I have the correct team number in configuration but I don't see my username in the team list nor does anything come up when i click on "View User Statistics".

Running the GPU client on a PowerColor Radeon HD 5770.

Kinda confused about the clients. Are the GPU clients better to go with or the original ones?

My current CPU is a Intel Core2Quad Q8300 OCed to 3.3GHz.

Would I benefit more using the CPU client over the GPU?

No, the GPU client will return far more ppd.

Currently have 3 clients running 2 CPU, 1 GPU. The GPU is reporting 720 ns per day, no idea if that is good or not lol.

My old 8800GT died (again!) two weeks ago and I haven't yet tried cooking it for a second time to revive it. It was running in my testbench rig i.e. a pile of spare parts so if it's FUBAR this time won't be replaced anytime soon. Darn thing out-folds the 5850 too!

Count me in. my clocked quad core might be of some benefit to the team. Not sure my 9600gt will be of m much use. It's clocked but still doesn't run very quickly... will check it out when I get home from work. Make some banners and I'll advertise on face book and other sites I use.

Desktop 1
AMD Phenom II x4 945 black edition running stock 3.0 Ghz
2X ATI Radeon HD 5770 Jasper chipset 850Mhz

Desktop 2
AMD XII 3800+ 2.4 Ghz
Nvidia GeForce gts220 think @ 700 Mhz (will edit Once I actually look at it)

Dektop 3
AMD Athlon 3800+ Single 2.4Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 9400GT @ 500 Mhz

Laptop 1
Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.6 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 9300

Laptop 2
Pentium 4 Single 2.6 Ghz
has a ati m300 in it so only using cpu F@H

Laptop 3
Pentium 4 single 2.4 Ghz

I'll definitely be joining when I get home in two weeks! I should have my new rig folding along with my PS3.

Some how I don't think the gov't computers I work on out here would appreciate me putting them on here :P

Installed.

Since I bought a laptop (and quit playing Team Fortress 2) my desktop just sits idle all day/night anyway. Might as well put it to some good use.

Edit: What's the team's number?

I think it's a detection issue with 6000-series cards. Try adding "-forcegpu ati_r800" in the advanced settings, or add it to the client's shortcut e.g. "<path>\Folding@home.exe -forcegpu ati_r800"

I used to do the SETI@Home thing back in the day - never have hooked up this, though.

Since I Have 2/3 cards that are CUDA enabled (2 * GTX260s + a GTS250 dedicated to PhysX), I'll try to get another 192 + 192 + 4 + 4 virtual cores going on this soon enough.

Seeing as I am pursuing a Master's in Biotechnology to be followed by a pursuit of a Ph. D. in Bioinformatics, I really should be contributing, shouldn't I?

It's been a while since I did this with another website.
I will join this team now that I have new and better hardware. It's interesting.

The stats are only refreshed periodically, so completed WUs won't show up until the next update. I see your name there now, so a belated welcome!

Im confused. Im not going to read through the entire thread but the Op mentioned processor power yet the rest of what I read mentions GPUs. Set me straight.

I have an I7 3960x Oc`d to 4.4GHZ and Dual 6950s ready to go when I get home.

There are clients for both CPU and GPU use, but modern GPUs have far greater processing power for this sort of thing.

Even running a dedicated client for each core at 100% load won't get the i7 anywhere near a mid-range GPU's performance, let alone a monster like the 6950. Two of the Windows clients, one for each card, would be awesome.

I run my 5850 constantly and only pause the client if I'm gaming. Otherwise it just churns away in the background unnoticed and has no effect on day-to-day performance. In contrast, running a CPU client on all four cores of my Phenom slowed everything down yet returned a fraction of the work units per day.

So I have a couple of questions, but newbie to the Folding project and would like to participate, and will be installing the gpu client on one machine this week.....new 6k series radeon video card that our normal use is only about an hour or 2 every other week for gaming anyways...and will be sitting idle the rest of the time.
Here is my question....has anyone tried using this on any of the new AMD APUs? I just upgraded one of our machines at home to an A8-3870k quad core with a radion 6550d apu. I am very curious to see how I might be able to apply the graphics core on that machine....
Feel free to pm me if I need more information or if I am missing something??? TIA

I certainly haven't, as my 5850 is more than adequate for my modest gaming needs. I have a feeling that the V7 Beta client will be required for the recent crop of GPUs - see here.

Thanks...yeah just got the machine running this morning so will be looking to install a client today. This A8 seems to be new enough, not enough documentation to search for. Thanks for the link and will check that out today.

Got my new A8 running with the beta7...working away now, and curious to see how it does. I also set up beta7 on a second machine that should have been able to use the radeon 4350, but apparently there is an issue with my new card, gonna have to figure that one out, but running on the dual core on that machine, since it is only used every other weekend for gaming...figured it could be running FAH during the normal downtime.
I will be keeping my eyes on both machines to see how they are doing. Although I will tell you that the A8 with the 6550d on chip, is running at about 10deg F hotter with FAH running....so I may look into installing a new cooler sooner rather than later. All good information to have about our machines, and glad I can help out.

The GPU2 client requires CUDA support, which Nvidia didn't introduce until the 8xxx-series iirc.
