Default How to root the continuum

This is all copied straight from my original topic under the "suggest new" section:
http://androidforums.com/suggest-new/228344-samsung-continuum-rooted.html

This will be a simple process and is my first tutorial. I will be using z4root for this.
I am not responsible for any damage or lost data.

1) Go to the market and search "z4root". There will most likely be 2. One of the descriptions will have what looks to be Asian writing. You need the one that is in english. I will put up screen shot as soon as I figure out how to lol.

2) Download and install the application. Pretty simple.

3) After the installation is complete, You need to run it.

4) You now have 2 choices: "Temporary root" and "Permanent root"

5) Pick either one, but remember that the temporary one does not stick, and will disappear after a reboot.

6) It will first say something about saving files. Then it will say "Running exploit to obtain root" or something along the lines of that. You then will wait. If it goes longer then about 3 min. Go on to the last 2 steps. If it finishes, Congrats, you are rooted.

7) Since Your phone is taking so long, I recommend you do a battery pull. That is what I had to do when I rooted. You can try pressing the back button, and then restarting the app. That is also an option.

8) After you've shut down, or pulled the battery, you need to turn it back on. After it starts, go back and start the app again. If it gets stuck again, do step 7 and this step again.

Congrats, you should now be rooted! Have fun, I recommend using set CPU so you can underclock the CPU to save battery.

If you need to unroot, PM me and I'll write a tutorial on how to unroot.

I'm gonna have to agree with you, but I have no experience in ABD, so I won't be unrooting to try. If you want, you could try and let me know so I can put that toward the bottom of my post, and you will be credited of course.

I don't plan on unrooting unless verizon puts out an update to 2.2. It's really killing me especially since I had a droid 1 for a while. 2.1 is such a big step back for me.

unroot/reroot should only take you 10 minutes tops if you have the drivers installed on your comp

So, has anyone managed to get Clockwork or any other Recovery installed and running on the Continuum yet? If we get these baby steps done maybe we'll actually get a dev to build some ROMs.

I know that, but I just don't feel like having to put more software onto an already WAY too bogged down system. I also have absolutely no experience in ABD.

I would try, but I'm too worried about messing up my phone and then not being able to get a replacement.

That is my one huge concern I am 13 after all, but until multiple people can confirm this, I will not risk it.

Okay, the Linux instructions look far too simple compared to the Windows ones.... I think I'll wait and see if anyone can get it going before I try digging into it.....

So i am completely new to the whole rooting a phone idea, but it seems very easy to do if you are semi computer savy and there are way to many benefits . I have read all the forums on how to do this, and i keep seeing that you need to use ODIN and have a stock backup, but i have not found a thread saying how to create one? any help? the only reason i see to create one is the OTA release of Froyo may not be possible if i remove all the verizon bloatware bull that they force on the phones.

You do not need a stock backup when you root, but you would need won if you were to remove all the bloatware. I personally just used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze the bloatware, that way I don't have to mess around trying to get back to stock. You will have to pay like $5, but imo it's worth it. You're also going to need a stock ROM once we start getting some ROMs of our own over at XDA.

awesome, is there a thread you know of that details titanium backup and how to freeze all of these or is it pretty self explanatory.

It's very self explanatory, but you NEED to have the paid version in order to freeze apps. It's like $5, but it is definitely worth it. All you do is select the app and click "Freeze"

Dfgged, I've had an issue maybe you can help fix. I left my phone rooted when the update released and downloaded it. with that my phone I guess lost root access partly but won't let me root or unroot. Is it time for a dreaded reset to get tbpro back.

is there a set of "simpler" instructions to do this? I haven't done this yet and would like to figure this out. Also I have a stock kernal and if I can get root access back following your instructions I could possibly get a stock odin file. However, this is the first android i've owned and coming from a blackberry where none of this is possible might take a little to figure out how to do all this.

I rooted mine with superoneclick, which took like 8 times because z4root would not do it. Could I have instructions on how to unroot?

I just have to say that I could not agree more. I LOVED my Droid 1! Right up until it got stuck in Airplane Mode. I got a good deal on a Continuum, so here I am. I did let it grow on me more than I had expected it to, but even with it's handful of merits it's no Droid...
