That's not good. I think you should take a pic, though. A short drop onto a soft surface should not do much damage to any device...and I'm sure Dell's QC process is more rugged than that.
If more folks report similar troubles...I'll have to consider a different phone.
Is that kind of thing covered by warranty, or are you just sol if that happens? I've dropped my iPhone and evo numerous times, but never had a problem.
I've dropped mine twice and its been fine. Plus like the previous poster said look at the engadget pen stabbing video. I think this guy just had bad luck
Are there options yet for protection? I have a leather sleeve for my Blackberry, which helps protect it when I drop it from time to time. Of course it didn't help it when I dropped it and then landed on it with my motorcycle a few years ago, but you can't expect miracles
I actually dropped my BB last week from my motorcycle, the sleeve was all scuffed up, but the BB had zero marks.
I have a one week old Dell Streak. 2 Days ago I dropped it from 3 feet on concrete. It landed directly on the screen (was in soft pouch) and the screen cracked on all surface. I Thought that the so called GorillaGlass would be stronger.
It works Fine.
If anyone Knows where to get replacement screen for this device, PLEASE let me know.
I looked at websites which sell those kind of things but could not find for this model.

Reason: Image links creating log-in screen removed
The original poster (3 total posts) doesn't have a picture and provides a shattered iphone no less???....and has never returned with one....maybe when he finds one on the internet. The 'second poster' (only post) has the same problem. The third poster (only post with the same conjugation problem) doesn't have a picture either.
I don't know why this person is doing this, but I guess everyone has an agenda.
Oh and even if the youtube guy dropped it 25 meters from a crane onto a concrete block, you should know people well enough that they lie...especially when a replacement may be sought after. I'm sure he dropped it 3 inches, in a place with only a quarter of the earth's gravity, onto a fluffy white cloud.

Unbelievable! Before I saw a strengthen test, which proves it very stable. So I am going to buy one as a gift to my friend. Today I am worrying about this problem, after watching the video Jreitnauer7 posted.
Today Dell Streak will be on sale in the US. Should I buy or not?

My understanding is that the Gorilla glass protects the surface of the screen from scratches, not stress fractures (but is not scratch PROOF). Because of the size of the screen, it is more susceptible to stress fractures and cracks from falls and abnormal pressure (don't sit on it) than a smaller screened phone.
If you are in an environment that requires a rugged phone, then the Streak will probably not suit you. If you are someone who usually babies your devices and can benefit from the larger screen, then the Streak may be a good match.
The Streak is not on sale today...and it appears no one (even at Dell) really knows if / when it will be released. If you need a phone within the next few days, I'd also look elsewhere.
I dropped my Dell Streak from 6 to 10 inches it landed in a ceramic bowl result shattered screen.
Gorilla glass is not living up to the hype.
Why do you think they make ceramic safety hammers to shatter vehicle windows for. a hand thrown ceramic ball, no bigger than 6 mm will shatter a car window.
I have dropped mine twice now from about 2-3ft (The second time happened 10 minutes after the first... ) from my desk and even though I have a wooden floor, it landed screen down and it was fine. I guess the protective case may have helped as it sticks out roughly half a cm past the screen so that takes the impact rather than the screen.

Not even gorilla glass will take that punishment
FWIW, the Corning CEO was on CNBC a few weeks ago...stated that "Gorilla Glass" was used in some cell phones, and was told that a delivery truck had run over a phone using said product. The phone was destroyed, yet the screen was in tact. "Gorilla Glass" was also supposed to have survived the "frozen turkey test" (frozen turkey fired/catapulted into a sheet of given product).
Whether or not there are variants of Gorilla Glass, per the different phone mfgs. specs, he did not say, but given his comments and description, one would think that if installed on a phone, it would survive a drop from one's pocket, and not completely fail. He went on to mention that GG will be used in car windshields, and TV panels "due to its durability".
Gorilla Glass" was also supposed to have survived the "frozen turkey test" (frozen turkey fired/catapulted into a sheet of given product).
I'm no materials expert but I would question how thick said sheet of glass was. 6 inch piece of glass will obviously have much more stopping power than the 1cm that is in a phone screen.
The other thing that I would just like to throw out there is that glass is very finicky. I have dropped smart-phones and been certain that I broke the screen, only to pick them up and have the screen be intact, I've also had the opposite happen.
Is Gorilla Glass stronger? According to the manufacturers and to some of the tests that we've seen, yes. Is it un-breakable, NO! I think a lot of the screen breaks that have occurred are very subjective and given how glass behaves under certain conditions it is hard to say that it's Gorilla glasses fault.
I think the simple answer is, if you drop your smart phone from any reasonable height and it doesn't break count yourself lucky - Gorilla Glass or not.
I have had one massive drop where I whipped my Nexus One out of my pocket and let go of it on the way up it landed after around a 5 ft drop on a hard wood floor and didn't even get a scratch. Others report one drop from a table onto carpet and their screen breaks.
Take care of your smart phone.

Haha sorry u don't know jack... i stabe mine with a knife and it did do shit to the screen really and with a fork. But if you go really hard you could brake the lcd behind it.. ya its tuff shit mang.... ps go youtube look at what the glass can take befor they put in on phones...
People seem to think that gorilla glass is unbreakable. It's just more scratch resistant.
I dropped my iPod Touch numerous times onto the pavement, I'd say 10 times over the 2 years I had it. From between waist and upper body distance. I believe Apple uses Gorilla Glass. Any ways almost every time I dropped it, it landed screen down (of course) but it never cracked. But on the flip side I've heard stories of people dropping their device with gorilla glass from a much lower distance than I did mine onto a much softer surface and it cracking the 1st time. Gorilla Glass might just be the most unpredictable technology I've seen in awhile
As with ANY display out there, there is an LCD screen under a sheet of protective glass. In the case of the Streak, that protective display is Gorilla Glass.
That doesn't mean the phone is indestructible, it means that direct contact isn't going to break it, and it's not going to be scratched. If you sit on it, drop it and it lands awkwardly, or TRY to break it? It's probably going to work. For resisting scratches and any type of straight-on impacts, it's not going to break or scratch like most phones will.
That pic of the iPod has 9 impact points on the screen alone....Hell of a bounce!!
A bounce usually creates a 'spider crack' from point of impact....Not 9 !!
so just to warn you guys, dont drop the phone... lol

The same has happend to me, i dropped my phone while i was in the pub & it had a screen protector on aswell. i went to pick my dell streak up and found it was smashed very badly. i was gutted because i canceled my insurance 2 weeks before. now im stuck with a contract that i dont want. The streak i had was fauly so i was going to ring O2 up when i had the chance to tell them it wasnt working. i went to O2 and they have said it would cost me Ł230 to have it repaitred because it cracked the case and the screen. Now i have got an old nokia to use until i have the money for a new one. Im not going to bother getting it fixed because the same thing will probarbly happen again due to the screen braking easily. I have messaged dell and told them but i am still waiting for a reply.

Exactly. Something I don't understand because that was never said anywhere. Glass that's more resistant to breaking can still be broken just the same that a water resistant watch can still get water damaged in certain situations.
Fear not my fellow Streak users, for I hopefully can be of service.* I too was unfortunate enough to break my Dell Streak screen but could not find a service centre to repair my Streak. So, with this in mind, I set out to source parts for the Dell Streak and am now proud to offer my service for Dell Streak Repairs.
I used to work for a company who repaired PDA handhelds a few years back and we were the only repair centre Dell chose to forward all out of warranty repairs too.
I no longer work for the company and hope to go it alone amongst the sea of already established repair centres.
Please take a look at my site. It's basic, I know but I'm still learning how to make websites! www.dellstreakrepairs.co.uk
I hope I am able to help you all.
Kind regards,
Phil.

I have sourced the dell streak screen at present. Other parts i'm trying to source is the case plastics, headphone jack, mic, speakers and external buttons. I am offering my services on a worldwide basis. Shipping prices will be slightly higher for any location outside of the UK as to fully insure your Streak.
I dropped mine from my wife's SUV (which is pretty high) to the concrete, and it landed right on the corner then flipped onto the screen. I looked at it for about a minute before I had the balls to pick it up and look at the screen, but there was no damage other than a bit of scuffing on the plastic.
Yes im interested in this service i have emailed and have not gotten answer back please contact me as soon as possible tiaronford@ymail.com . I also live in US so communicating verbally seems impossible because the number wont go through.

Is that kind of thing covered by warranty, or are you just sol if that happens? I've dropped my iPhone and evo numerous times, but never had a problem.
Bought the streak, but also have the ipone. Bought the otterbox Defender for it. Lifetime warranty. Hate the clip - doesn't hold phone if you are doing anything except sitting in an office. Fell out when got in truck, didn't know. Looked for it, saw it in driveway. Looked fine.
Case was fine - not a scratch (now remember this is a 3/4 ton diesel extended cab - my horse trailer truck). Picked it up, looked good til I turned it over - screen looked like that shatterproof glass or a kaleidoscope, lol!
Case replaced - warranty DOES NOT cover contents. Still a good case.

Forgot. Iphone doesn't have insurance or not anything worth having. $15 a month and you STILL have to pay the $200 you would if you upgraded. Plus they send you a replacement but they charge your card while you send back the damaged one and if they don't think their warranty covers it they keep the charge on there until they get the new one back. And it does NOT cover dropping it or water damage. You have to go to Best Buy for that and you have to purchase the phone from THEM. I did that for the Streak. Still doesn't cover phones not immediately recovered from immersion.
I have a customer who brought me his Dell Streak after pulling it out of his pocket. He purchased it from a local big box store (B*** B*y). After taking it back to the store and sitting through the warranty process a "manager" stepped in. Just before the associate was going to switch out the unit for a new one the g33k squ@d stepped in and said it was abuse. I have examined this unit thoroughly and found no outside scratches anywhere on the metal or glass but the lcd is spider webbed. I have submitted the issue to Dell and promptly been ignored even though several technicians have looked into the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?
dropped my streak the other day and it didn't fall flat but hit the floor with one edge of the screen. that gorilla glass, off course, did break in a totally unexpected way: got some lateral pressure and didn't like that obviously.
in my opinion its just bad luck, coz the screen is pretty resistant in one dimension, the direction you tap it. if some pressure perpendicular to the screen is applied, it is not so resistant. so: hit the screen from the side and it will break.
i have had the same experience with high pressure glass windows during university. they take 1000 atm on the surface, but as soon there is some "itch" on the side perpendicular to the flat surface, they'll end up as powder.
I dropped my dell streak and the screen shattered, called dell they said it voids the warranty...This is a bunch of bs...no other carrier or manufacturer has this type of bs policy...I live in the us does anyone know how I can get this fixed.......HELP........
I have the otterbox commuter case on my streak with the included screen cover. i have dropped my streak from about 3-4 feet in the air and it's been fine. not that i do it regularly but i feel safe having my phone in the case and not having to be anal retentive about what will happen if it drops
Well I have broken the screen on my Dell Streak and I didn't even drop it. I keep the device on a table next to my sofa when at home and keep it in my trouser pocket when out. It was working fine this morning and I haven't dropped it or anything. I got home and put it in its usual spot and then went about my business. picked it up to use it five minutes or so later and the screen is cracked and the device is unusable. The gorilla glass is fine and I think it is the lcd stuck underneath that is cracked and it is totally unusable. This is a real shame as I have become rather attached to my streak. I have heard some stories that Dell will replace but some people here seem to think otherwise.
[edit] Just been informed from Dell that this is not covered in the manufacturers warranty.
[edit] I had my Streak returned from Dell today repaired and in good working order. I am typing this on it now. It seems that they repaired it in a matter of hours and sent it back to me the same day. :-)
