Question Can you convert an iPhone Dock for HTC phones

Wasn't sure where to put this ....

Are there any adaptors out there that allow you to convert an iPhone / iPod dock so that you can plug in the HTC Desire (or even just to get it to female USB)?

Seems a waste to have a dock on my alarm clock that can't be used with the HTC phone.

regards,

Stu

The Iphone uses it's own Apple port for charging and data transfer. Where as, HTC uses a modified mini usb(or V3), or with newer ones use micro usb(v8)

Indeed, that's why I wondered if anyone did a converter. I have an bedside alarm clock with iPod dock and it would be great if I could use that to charge an HTC Desire via a conversion lead. Save one more thing being plugged in.

I doubt there's enough demand for mass production of such an adapter. You could certainly make one yourself. Pinouts for the connectors are certainly available online.

Seems odd to call it a waste. I haven't seen an HTC designed to dock with a connector on the bottom anyway.

You could find a pinout of apple port and v3 or v8(whatever your phone uses) and splice them together. Problem with that is, iphone docks are made shaped for the iphone. At that point, you could look for a dock online, or make one.

Nexus One and HTC Desire both have Micro USB ports on the bottom and upright docks are available already for the former.

Even a fly lead converter would just save on that extra plug. May have a look at making one as you can get iPod extension leads so it would be a case of fitting a Micro USB to the end of that.

sadly the total success of the ipod has not resulted in other mp3 manufacturers raising their game to compete, they have been totally wiped out. So every dock in every car/hotel room, train station etc is for an ipod!! Thank god the phone market didnt go that way as well...

That's because whilst on the dock, DATA is transferred and processed by the docking station (hence why it's controllable via the controls/remote contol) whilest through the headphone jack it's just the AUDIO going through processed and unamplified by the phone!

Actually, the Droid is made to use a magnet in certain positions to automatically kick it into certain modes. It may not be safe for all phones, and you should probably use a very small magnet, but this dock was made specifically for the Droid and should be fine.

Im just warning people about magnets and smart phones.

Wouldnt want anyone else losing a 300 investment by someone not warning them about the dangers.

You are probably not going to get a converter. Apple wouldn't be too keen on allowing such a product on their proprietary dock port/cable. This is why I don't understand how these dock products sell so well. We have Apple docks built into thousand dollars sounds systems. What happens when we step outside of the Apple world? You are essentialy screwed...

I stand corrected! (should have read through the thread). That said, not sure how practical this thing would be for the OP's application!

Be careful with magnets. Yes, I have a Droid X, and it does have a magnetic sensor inside the phone to assist with working with docks and holsters. This was placed in the phone by the people who designed it. The homebrew dock spenspuma mentioned appears to have the magnet placed at the right spot, to interact with the internal magetic sensor of the phone. Magnets interacting with other parts of the phone are probably not a good idea.

Does anyone have the dockboss+, if so does it work with the alarm clock funtion so that it plays at alarm time and do the controls on the dock work to forward to the next song, or does it just charge and play if you use the controls on the droid?

I would like a DockBoss+ but I'm hoping someone in China makes a cheaper one and puts it on ebay.

Any update on this? How does sound quality compare to minijack cable?

Happy just for music

if you just want to play music from your android/pc via your ipod dock,
use a dockboss airplay cable jive
just plug into your bose etc and play your sounds wirelessly
works on both my htc desire s and htc one x
