Noob question for you rooting specialists: What happens to the HTC Sense apps/widgets when rooting?
As you can see from my question I am new to rooting. I am about to get a HTC device (either the Desire or I wait until next month and get the Desire HD).
Now I am wondering what actually happens with all the apps and widgets that come with Sense UI. I assume none of them will work anymore once the Desire is rooted? Or will they stay and still be useable? Can you download them somewhere again from HTC for example and install on a rooted device?
I heard of custom Roms that will let you root the device and still use some HTC apps. Is that correct or is there no such thing?
Finally, a question that might be a bit of speculation currently. With HTC introducing the new www.htcsense.com website with features such as SMS backup for life, contact editing, app shop, etc.... some of the stuff like the SMS backup sound very interesting but now I am wondering if these features will be available for rooted devices. Anybody has any ideas about that?
Would be kind of unfair if rooted devices could not use this HTC service.
It depends what method of rooting you use and /or what Ron you choose to put on. if you are able to root the existing Rom, nothing about sense will change. there are sense based roms that you can flash too.

as a former iphone owner and a current iphone hater I've been really drooling over the Desire HD in the past month- since I've never had an android phone and was sick of the attitude of "it's apple way or the highway".
I guess I didn't know enough about Android- I thought it's a wonderful world that I can fully customize to my own needs.
so only now I've found out (don't laugh) that every android phone comes with a list of stupid apps that the carrier has been gracious enough to force upon you, and to remove them you need to root (unlock) the phone, which can void your warranty.
so my question is- what the hell is the difference from the crappy iphone then?
and is it true that the nexus one is the only phone that doesn't come with a list of apps I can't get rid of?

I'm using an HTC Desire bought from HTC. No carrier branding. So no crappy apps. If you decide to buy at a discounted price from a carrier, crappy apps are the price you pay.
And as Dan said, Rooting can remove the crap, and depending on your carrier, you can always unroot, reinstall the crap (as part of unroot process) and return it for warranty.
And it doesnt have anything to do with Android platform, and definitely cannot be considered a difference b/w Android and iPhone. A difference b/w branded and unbranded definitely.

I dont subscribe to every thread I reply to, so post in relevant official threads for a speedy response. Alternately use the official Supernova forum
the widgets that come with the phone are HTC specific. They come with the SENSE UI not android. bloatware apps are usually bundled in if its tied to a carrier (Ie - t-mobile, telus) the only way to remove them is if you root by following some guides here.
Even stock Android has widgets that, out the box, can't be removed. Let alone the apps OEMs add to go with their own launchers.
As said, rooting would allow you to remove these widgets/apps but the stock Desire (from HTC not a carrier) is fine and the apps/widgets add to the use of the handset
I've been rooting my slide for a cumulative of about 10 hours. Most of that is because I'm using a Dell dimension 2300 whatever. I had to format the C: again to even get it to work then load updates and .........holy crap. What a weekend.
I came to a stopping point though. Does anyone have any idea why, in the command prompt, when I get to "exploid" it say's the file does not exist. But when I go into androidsdk tools. there it is. I think it may have something to do with not being a file type with no program associated to open it (by the look of the icon) Is there a particular program I can download/open to associate to this exploid file? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks...
