Anyone help a n00b out to root an Orange-branded Desire please?
I know that there are loads of threads about this but I fear there is more to it now that I have already upgraded to FroYo (officially). Is it right I need to downgrade to 2.1 first?
What I want to do is install a ROM without Sense that will support a Wiimote to play games, get rid of the Orange bloatware and speed things up a bit. I also want Apps2SD+ and as many bells and whistles as possible really.
I'm a bit confused with the wealth of information out there, one-click, goldcards, de-branding, partitioning SD cards etc. So if there's someone out there who has rooted an Orange Desire running FroYo recently, without having needing to buy an unlock code then please could you point me in the right direction?
Worth noting, once you have rooted, you will have to wipe data and cache via recovery (turn on phone whilst holding vol down, then use vol to navigate to recovery and power to select it) before you flash a non-sense rom. You will essentially be starting from scratch.
You have to partition your SD card for a2sd+. Best to do it before flashing the rom.
Once rooted, download rom manager and "flash clockworkmod recovery" then partition your card. 512MB, swap=0. Make sure you have backed up youyr sd contents to a pc first.
If you have an orange splash screen, that may remain after this, but you will want to flash s-off later in life anyway, which as an added bonus replaces the splash.

I successfully rooted this evening using Unrevoked after creating a goldcard first. After root I downloaded Rom Manager and partitioned my SD Card. I'm interested in DeFrost but I'm not entirely sure what to do now. I've downloaded the full ROM from the link Danfrance posted and have it on my PC as a .zip file. Erm, now what?
If you have a look at the Rooting faq in my sig, it should give you more information.
Then maybe visit the flashing of a rom another day. Theres other info such as wiping in the faq you should absorb first as you will need to do this with defrost

Steps to flash a custom ROM

Whether you choose to start the ROM flash from ROM Manager or Recovery, ultimately it is done through recovery.
Steps to flash a custom ROM:
Copy the .zip to the root of your SD card (Not essential but easier to find it during flashing)
Switch off phone.
Switch it on by pressing Vol- and Power button, then release power button first, then Vol button
Some options are shown on screen.
Use ur Vol buttons to navigate to Recovery and select Recovery by pressing Power button again.
After Recovery options are shown, Choose "Install zip from sdcard"
Now choose the zip file of the ROM.
Select it, and press Power.
Confirm the option by pressing the Yes option.
The ROM completes its task and gives you a message.
Use Back key and Power key to navigate to main menu.
Choose the reboot option.
On reboot, the first time, the ROM will take some extra time to run. From the second boot onwards, it will become normal.

Cheers mate. I installed DeFrost before I saw your reply using a guide somewhere else. All went perfectly so thank you so much for your help.
I've put Launcher Pro on it now and I'm in my 12th hour of tinkering. I'm now considering changing my icons to words.
The only problems I've come across so far have been cosmetic, such as my notification bar being the same colour as the text detailing the individual notification and some app data didn't make the switch (All my hard work getting 3 stars on Angry Birds!)
There's so many new settings and options available to me now it's crazy! I'm sure I'll get used to it all very shortly.
Yeah but there are roughly a million different things in the notification bar you can change the colour of, finding out which one is which takes a bit of trial and error. I think I've got the hang of it now though.
Absolutely loving my phone now, it's like having a brand new, faster, more customizable and generally better phone. Love it and would recommend doing it to anyone.
The only issue I have had is that at home, my Wi-Fi drops quite often. It never has before and doesn't on any other device. At work, my phone stays connected to Wi-Fi constantly so not sure what all that's about. If it's the biggest problem I encounter then I'll be happy, but a fix would be nice.
Oh and the ad-blocker software I downloaded doesn't work.
