on aosp/cyanogen roms they can be oc'd to 1.3ghz
however in most cases anything above 1152mhz will cause random system hangs
with most custom roms this is achievable as the kernels are seperately flashable.
richard trips kernel is a good start.
you will need setcpu

Sorry for being a noob, but how do I flash a kernel.
Do I do it in recovery?

if you are rooted and have a custom rom then you boot to recovery (clockwork/amonRA) and chose to flash zip. choose the zip and let it flash
reboot and wait for a bit
configure setcpu

No wipe needed. It just replaces the kernel in the rom with the custom rom
1190Mhz is the max overclock. Previously believed to be 1305Mhz but there was an error in the multiplier of the kernel.
To be honest, most desires can't handle 1190. 1152 is the highest I can go.

You need a specific kernel for your rom. What rom do you have?

Reading the Leedroid thread:
[FroYo Sense] LeeDrOiD V2.2f (05/11 l Official l OC&UV l FAST l STABLE l WWE) - xda-developers
Sounds like you already have an overclock kernel. Obviously without SetCPU its not overclocked. So you need to get that app.

Yup, Leedroid 2.2f is pre-overclocked. Get setCPU to overclock it, then for dirty giggles grab Quadrant to see how badly you're hammering the CPU ;-)
The HTC Desire is one of the latest high end phone by HTC bringing a huge 3.7" inch high quality AMOLED screen for crystal clear viewing, powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and runs on, you guessed it, Android.
