Default Desire Rooting and loading Desire HD Rom (Newb Friendly)

Thought I would add this for now. I can delete it if needed. Lekky sent you a PM.
*Sorry just realized I posted this in General. My bad *

Newb Guide to rooting the Desire and flashing an Desire HD ROM.

1. Rooting
The unrevoked method is by far the easiest. On the Mac it is really a one-click process.

On a PC you will need to do the following:
A. Uninstall HTC Sync and Doubletwist

B. Install HBOOT drivers
C. Install unrevoked
D. In your phone go to settings-->applications-->development Check USB Debugging

E. In your phone go to settings-->connect to pc Change default to “Charge Only”

F. Now connect your phone to your PC

G. Launch unrevoked app and follow directions

On a Mac:

A. Install unrevoked

B. In your phone go to settings-->applications-->development Check USB Debugging

C. In your phone go to settings-->connect to pc Change default to “Charge Only”

D. Now connect your phone to your Mac

E. Launch unrevoked app and follow directions

Your phone should now be rooted with clockwork recovery

You can install custom roms if wanted

2. Format your SD card to use the HD ported ROM

To be able to use the baadnwz rom which is a port of the Desire HD (along with all the nice new Sense features) you will need to partition your SD card.

There are 2 ways:

1. Download a Ubuntu live cd and boot into it to be able to use gparted to partition the SD card
2. Go here to download a Win application to partition

Don’t use Rom Manager app to partition. It will only partition with ext2 and to a max of 512MB

Instead use the win app link to partition with an ext3 (1GB) after the main fat32 partition (all instructions are in the link-very easy to do).

*The only caveat is you may need a card reader and micro SD to SD adapter (not sure if you can partition by connecting the phone and changing connection to Disk Drive instead of charging

3. Go to Market and install Rom Manager. Create a Backup

In the app choose boot into recovery. In the recovery menu choose backup to create a Nandroid backup. DON’T skip this step. If anything goes wrong you now have a nice backup to revert back to.

Choose reboot in the menu when done

4. Install the HD Rom

I recommend the baadnwz HD rom. Everything works perfectly except for 720p vid recording.

If you want to see all the new cool features of the new Sense go to YouTube to see what the HD has to offer.

A. Once the rom is downloaded rename the zip to update.zip
Transfer this to the root folder of the card

B. Open the Rom Manager app choose boot into recovery

C. In the Recovery menu choose "install zip from sdcard" option.

D. Now first choose "toggle signature verification" to turn off the signature check and then choose "apply sdcard:update.zip".

E. Allow the new rom to install. Once done. Choose reboot.

F. The first boot takes about 5 minutes at least. So don’t panic and just leave the phone

G. The only additional step may be to add in your carrier’s APN settings.
-To do this go Settings---> Wireless & Networks-> Mobile Networks---> Access Point Names
Press menu hard key. Add in the APN details.
When done press hard menu key and choose save.

APN list for every carrier

Rather than download ubuntu live cd, why not just download gparted live cd?

Much smaller.

Since you're already partitioning via gparted, why suggest Rom manager? Recovery is better. Rom manager just adds something else to go wrong.

Personally I recommend the unrevoked guide I link to in my rooting faq. It's more thorough.

Sorry, good work and all, but I don't really think It brings anything new to the table

I suggested ROM manager because it might be easier for people to boot into recovery (you can do this from rom manager). That and sometimes guides assume that people know how to do each step. Like toggle verification-I had to search for that.

Also, some people may not know how to partition. I like having everything on one page. No searching needed

I agree with Gparted, unless you really want to get into Linux then Gparted does the job in terms of formatting partitions. Used it to recover machines in the past.

You are right about the 512MB limit, but ROM Manager can format to ext3.

And you can partition by connecting the phone to a computer - I have done using a linux VM on my mac. Though if I had a suitable card reader I'd probably use that for simplicity (fewer devices in the chain).

An easier way instead of gparted is just put amon ra recovery, latest .1 version and partition through it

ive come to find recently that rom manager is satan
its a pain in the ass, it doesnt reboot into native recovery, it boots into a fake flash of clockwork via update.zip so it deletes itself when partitioning.
people use it to flash radios (bad bad bad)
it allows people with slcd to acces and flash non slcd roms as there is not warning and none of the roms on it are up to date which again causes screen bricks and they come here for help.
rom manager should be banned
it takes 2 seconds to power off and boot to recovery properly
if you are too lazy to manually boot to recovery then download quickboot

if you want to partition properly from the device then as said above use amonRA recovery 2.0.1
seriously though gparted takes seconds to boot into and is best for partitioning anything

Blue1K;

What theme are you using with the baadnewz's DHD ROM? (I'm looking at that transparent dock..)

I am currently using Diaz's theme..

edit: I'm guessing rEVOlution?
