pvt version. yeah its set to debug and its on charge only wen its connected up,wud take a screenshot but dunno how lol sorry
On the hboot screen does it say pvt 1, 2, 3 or 4?
It's not causing this issue though but you still need to know.
Screen shot. Open your device manager with android connected in hboot mode. Press the print screen key on your pc keyboard. Open paint and paste it in. You can trim it down there. Save and upload.
Repeat with desire connected with android running too please
Edit. Please can we continue this discussion in the root guide thread?

Hi, I followed procedure but when trying to run unrevoked reflash I get error access denied. The drivdea seemed to update ok via hboot - device manager in windows now shows my HTC - I'm connecting the phone via charge only + have tried other USB ports. Any ideas what's wrong ? The phone is pvt 1 and I'm on windows 7.
Thanks due the quick responces. I won't be able to check properly until tonight but I don't have avg but am running comodo which I did not disable , so could yet that. Iirc when the phone is connected in hboot device manager shows HTC or android booloader as the description. Reverts to my HTC when phone conndcted to pc conventionally.
It was Comodo blocking the install. I can now get unrevoked to start but getting `firmware too new`. i`ve uninstalled antivirus from the phone and retried. Sorry to be a newbie but dont understand where to go for the ...`If you forced all apps to SD card, this is impairing the installation of the superuser app. Go back through the guide and substitute "pm setInstallLocation 2" foir "pm setInstallLocation 0" and try it again`... command. How do I enter this ?
EDIT: realised the command was for forcing apps to sd - which I had done previously. Changed command line & rebooted. Still getting firmware too new message. Tried newer version of unrevoked, still same error
EDIT - Now rooted ! -connected desire in disk drive mode & it worked. Thanks to everyone for their help !

Go to the app Drawer. If there is an icon called "superuser" Your ROM has root access
Turn off the Phone. Hold Volume down and press power. At the HBoot screen, highlight "recovery" using Volume buttons, and press power to select. If you are evntually faced with a Black screen with green menu items, you have a custom recovery.

Thanks, appears to be rooted now. Was a bit heart stopping when unrevoked was doing a reboot loop about 3 times and repeating stuff it did before but seemed fine once Desire booted up normally after that.
Hello ,Thanks a lot for your guide in rooting . HTC Desire is my first android phone in which i would like to do some kind of experiments.
As per your guide I successfully rooted my HTC desire with Amon RA 2.0.1 due to pvt4 40000 device .Also I removed certain pre-installed applications from the ROM.
Now I would like to install a custom ROM based on Gingerbread.
1. Can you please advice me the best & stable Active ROM with good developments ongoing with / without HTC Sense
Android Version 2.2 | Baseband Version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0 htc-kernel@and18-2#1
Build Number 2.32.415.3 CL283905 release keys
Software number 2.32.415.3
Browser Version WebKit 3.1
3. Do i need to upgrade Radio before using a custom ROM?
4.I don't have any data's in my phone to take backup, Is it possible to revert back to the current ROM from the custom ROM later-on ?
Appreciate your good support in clearing my doubts !

Yeah was worried the phone was going to start getting boring over the last few months of the contract. But now with the option of Custom ROMS I feel I could probably keep the phone for another few years Thanks so much for the help!

3)no
4) if you do nandroid backup, you can revert back but as rooted.
you need RUU if you want your phone as when bought
Thanks for the help,
I have one more doubt
My recovery is on Amon RA 2.0.1 due to pvt4 40000 device (HTC Desire GSM Middle East Version).
So is it advisable to install the ROM's below with Amon RA 2.0.1 / pvt4 40000 device? I would like to try one by one copying the related ROM to SD card directly and run it from recovery

I made some notes as I went along of steps I thought were useful that weren't covered:
*Make a gold card
*When downloading HTC Sync, there's two versions, one called 'NAM'. I believe this is the North American Market version. I used the other one.
*Uninstall ATK
*Turn off WiFi
*Enable installation of non-Market apps (although somewhere else I saw it say disable!)
*USB charge only
*Android 1.0 will appear not to install properly on XP, that's ok
*If you forced all apps to SDCARD set "pm setInstallLocation 2"
*Before running unrevoked, make space on your phone

Hiya, thanks for the notes
Some of this is in the rooting FAQ, which this guide suggests is read first. However the non market apps one is a good point., I have never tried to root using unrevoked without that, but it makes sense it could cause trouble
i rooted my pvt4 40,000 with 3.3 which was succesful and i now have superuser and recovery (cwm) but i cannot do a nandroid back up!
says E:cant find MISC and other similar.
having read i should of used 3.21 is this the reason why?
if not as the root is on there why won't nandroid back up?

no its not. its that with a pvt40000 device you should use amonRA 2.0.1 which is listed on this guide
if you run the flash package again without connecting the device, select custom and choose amonRA 2.0.1 then connect device you will have it working nice

I plan to format and repartition my SD Card to use "App2sd", currently it's my GoldCard, will doing this cause me any issues if I stay with my rooted stock Rom ??
Which Rom would you recommend ? I had been thinking about GingerVillian or CM7.. Any issues with GPS ?
Well.you need a Rom with init.d support for a2sd+ so you'll need to flash a custom. The.partition itself won't cause issues on rooted stock but it will break the gold card so you'll have to re upload your image
