Exclamation WARNING - Do Not Use ROM Manager!!!

Recently, we have seen many device errors/failures caused by ROM Manager application.
Therefore, we recommend that you don't use it!

If you need to flash a ROM, backup or restore it, please use the custom Recovery (CWM or AmonRA).

If you need to partition your SD card, please use Gparted.

All this is explained in the Rooting FAQ.

Good job making this a sticky!

Unfortunately, most come here when it's too late!

It would probably be better if the rom devs put it in their first posts on the rom page over at XDA.

I'm not sure they're aware of the pitfalls we have seen here over at XDA.

I just want to point out this is in no way a dig at the dev behind rom manager. In the early days it did a lot for us and we were all very pleased with it and supported his work.

However, since the unrevoked rooting and true flash of recovery method came in, the fake flash version has been causing issues. Compatibility maybe?

True. CM for example still puts it in the ROM.
However, we saw that GV's dev stopped putting it in the ROM (I think since version v2.4).

Maybe we should also add that CWM 2.5.0.7 is the nicest. I always found the purple one a bit silly.

I think we mention that in the Rooting Guides.
Here we'd better send one clear message.

Added to faq:

The 2 main recoveries that we recommend here are clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 and AmonRA 2.0.1.

Note* there are other versions of both but we strongly discourage any other version than the above.

ok did you root by unrevoked?
if you did, do the following

pull battery from device, place it back in. hold "voldown+power"

the above will take you to the bootloader menu

use voldown to select recovery and then press power to chose it

this should take you to clockworkmod

Chose restore and restore the backup rom manager took.

not to worry too much.
boot to recovery again and there should be an option to mount mass storage (this makes you able to access the sdcard via recovery)

put this rom on your sdcard
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
its teppics rooted stock rom)
once its been put on your sdcard you then un mount mass storage
flash any zip from sdcard
choose the rom and wait

EDIT: the options to mount are "mounts and storage > Mount usb storage"

do you use a simcard?

is the device still usb mounted to the pc? if it is you need to turn off the usb toggle.

which carrier do are you with, do you have a card reader

ok so you are GSM if you didnt use a simcard you would be cdma. you do not need to understand android right now.

how did you get the file onto the sdcard? did you take it out and use a card reader? or did you click 2.usb-ms toggle
if you did the 2.usb-ms toggle then you will need to click it again to turn it off and disconnect device from pc before flashing the zip file

if this still doesnt work we need to find out what provider you are with as you might be able to get a pb99img.zip from shipped-roms to return it to original rom

Everything went fine till the final step. I downloaded the right exe, started the program, followed each step it said, plucked the phone with the usb cable (no failure), fastboot, then fastboot usb, in the exe i klicked "update" and waited the update to start! But after that nothing happens!! Nothing appears or disappears..

i get this message before the update : version-main FAILED (status read feiled (too many links))

so it detects the phone?
you might have something conflicting with the process on the computer, make sure htc sync is not running and make sure you have no other programs like myphoneexplorer or droidexplorer installed

if it doesnt work on fastboot try doing it in bootloader

so it detects the phone?
you might have something conflicting with the process on the computer, make sure htc sync is not running and make sure you have no other programs like myphoneexplorer or droidexplorer installed

if it doesnt work on fastboot try doing it in bootloader

Yes it detects the phone. HTC sync (only the drivers are installed) or other programs are not installed. I tryed doing it in bootloader too, but i always get the same situation. After update klick nothing happens.
As i said i get this message before the update: version-main FAILED (status read feiled (too many links))

ooooh sounds like you are using an after market usb cable and not the htc one. i have seen this before with cheep cables

anyway i am in the process of uploading a zipfile you can put on your sdcard to autoflash from bootloader called pb99img.zip

its the only way if you have usb issues.
this is the same version from your carrier (o2.de) so you wont need a gold card

it will be uploaded in about 15mins

it could be the usb port on the pc you are using

anyway heres the pb99img.zip
http://dmoproductions.co.uk/rasta1/pb99img.zip
download it and put it on the root of your sdcard using your card reader
once done put it back on the device and boot to bootloader (voldown+power)
it will then prompt whether you want to flash it, it will have a bar on the right side going through the progress.
charge the phone for a bit while its powered off before you do this as you do not want it running out off battery mid flash.
once its complete and you have got back into android, remove the file from the sdcard

no problem, we got there in the end, i know you have to go through all the stuff again but at least your phone is back in working order.

couple of things, now your phone is like new. if you do want to go down the rooting avenue safely now is the time.
follow our guides on this forum. they can be long but they are step by step and cover most if not all eventualities.

this type of problem doesnt normally occur and im guessing rom manager has a lot to do with it.

keep that pb99img.zip on your pc as its your return card should anything seriously bad happen.

again glad its sorted.

STAY AWAY FROM ROM MANAGER AND USE THESE FORUMS AS THEY ARE THE BEST :P

Just manually boot onto recovery. Read the rooting faq in the sticky thread, assuming you have a desire.

Dunno, not all US carriers are CDMA. Not that you can tell using the app where anyone is from (very useful!!)

If this one was for me, to answer your question yes I do have a desire. I tried to flash the InsertCoin GB Sense2.1 CM7 1.0.8 rom yesterday and I failed miserably. Phone got stuck on boot animation. had to reflash the ruu. Used unrevoked to root again and now im back to

Is this rom manager issue specific to the desire or are other devices having issues to this extent?

It's specific to the desire due to the evolution of our rooting process. Many phones have no choice but to use Rom manager. The desire was one of these phones.

We cannot comment on other devices as we are not familiar. All we can say is that Rom manager doesn't work well on the desire since the unrevoked method of rooting came about.

Did you have s-off and the cm7 hboot? If not it wouldn't work.

You could have just restored a backup from recovery if you took one. RUU was overkill.

Please do read the faq.

I didn't have a backup. That's one of the reasons i bought ROM Manager... to create a backup for me. Anyway my hboot is 0.93 which is not the same as the cm7 but i thought the custom rom would have change it for me...ignorance is never really bliss. No idea what s-off is so i guess i have some research to do.
I'll read the faq again and try to make sense of it. Wish me luck

Another thing, this morning i received an ota update. from 2.13.707.1 to 2.13.707.2 when the phone powered off and rebooted the android green robot thingy with the yellow exclamation mark came up. i pressed the power button and it proceeded to the clockwork mod screen. I selected the update from sd option, found the update in the download folder and updated. it went well. my phone updated. before ota updates would just update without me having to do anything. Is it because the clockwork mod recovery replaced the htc recovery when i rooted my phone? I believe i read that happens somewhere idk. I'm just trying to understand the process.
