So now you're criticising my life because I used 3 exclamation marks to exclaim my frustration that you cannot read a guide (no, sorry - 2 guides) properly? Not knowing what you are doing is one thing. Not reading text in order is another and is a completely different "Skill".
Good luck, you certainly did a fantastic job of burning your bridge with me.

no im criticising you for being on this forum (which I thought was a friendly place) and getting so frustrated you cant help me out man! I have admitted my ignorance here and attempted to state my problem. and as i said earlier i was following a you tube video which drove me a stray. i know this to in my stupidity
The Following User Says Thank You to chaoser For This Useful Post:
I am frustrated, I admit that but I DID help you out. I hinted that you revisit step 3 in post 1 which points to my adb and fastboot faq. This solves your problem with fastboot not being recognised. The reason I know it is not recognised is that you didnt follow step 3 in post 1. Hence my 3 !
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm new to rooting.
So I know you said to use cwm 2.5.0.7, but I had trouble getting it from the link above. So I googled cwm and under htc desire, found a new version? 5.0.2.0 which is what I used. That shouldnt be an issue should it?
Also, you might now want to ammend the guide since there is a newer version out?
I just tried the link given in post 1, and it asked for a user name and password, neither of which I had. In fairness I didnt look to see if anyone had said something about that or not, I just googled cwm and found their website, which as I said listed a newer version for htc desire. So is this version not official from them even though its on their site?
Would you therefore reccommend that I flash back to 2.5.0.7? This one I have seems to have worked, but if you say the older version is better, then I'll change to it. Also, how would I access it from the link in the post?
Thanks
Edit- presumably if I wanted to change to 2.5.0.7, I would just have to fastboot it and it would replace the version I have? I'm already rooted using the one I have. Changing revoceries wont cause an issue?

Ah see, the link in this guide goes to our download but the download is protected. There password is at the end of the ultimate toolbox thread in my signature.
If you're not having any issues currently, its up to you.
so if I wanted to go to the older version, it would just be a case of fastbooting the older one, and it would just replace the one I currently have? Would that affect the root that I already have?
Your post seems to suggest that there might be issues with the newer versions. If so, what are they?
Sorry if these are silly questions?
Thanks

Hi I am struggling to get the cmd prompt to work even though I have gone through all the faq and tried everything but I still get the same error " fastboot is not a recognized command". I have changed the settings in the Enviroment variables but still no joy. Anyone willing to help out. I have the sdk-tools on C:\ and have managed to complete the s-off process.
Info on Desire
Android 2.3.3
software no. 3.14.405.1
hboot-6.93.1002

Reason: more info
Did you use our sdk tools from the ultimate root thread? What's the full path of the adb.exe file? Can you browse there? Is what you put in environment variables the same path.
One of these is wrong. That's why its not recognized

Just going to check all that you mentioned-Thanks
I got the sdk-tools from the faq thread
In the environment path I entered ;C:\android-sdk-windows\tools as stated. Still no luck

If cut and paste fixed it then there was probably some subtle problem in what you were typing. Sometimes you really need to go character-by-character to spot these, as I know from experience.
ROM preferences are very personal. I suggest browsing the "what ROMs are people using" sticky at the top of this forum for ideas. The big question is whether you are after Sense, AOSP or Miui style?

I've added info on how to find the username and password.
that's the problem, i haven't a clue what i'm doing - if there was a prize for making the most amount of mistakes whilst rooting a phone i'd win outright. i've managed to do it now thanks...

That's the patch for rooting your ROM after you S-Off with revolutionary. So as you correctly deduce, if you are already rooted and just using revolutionary for S-Off, you don't need it.
The Following User Says Thank You to Hadron For This Useful Post:
I've read through this thread and can't see what the purpose of putting this on the SD card.. there doesn't seem to be any instruction to run it?
I'm rooted already so I'm only s-oof'ing to install touchrecovery 4ext instead of clockwork.
I don' think I need this file but I'm not sure as I've no idea what it is.
Thanks
I know its already been answered for you but....

I'm assuming the goal is to root your phone. If
you just want to S-OFF and have already rooted,
you can ignore most of the sections as you've
probably already done them. You can probably
just run the Revolutionary software and follow
the prompts (Section 5).
Hi there, I decided I'd had enough of the lack of space on my Desire and so decided to root. I have already previously updated it to Gingerbread (2.3.3) so am using this method to root.
Anyway, I'm having trouble with step 6, the 'ADDING CUSTOM RECOVERY' part. I've followed every step up to this point and they have all gone successfully and everything looks like it should.
Here's step 6, and in bold is the part where I get stuck:

b) Connect phone to PC through USB. You should see "FASTBOOT USB" on your phones screen.
c) Open CMD (Start > Run > type "cmd" and press enter) d) Type "fastboot flash recovery c:\your recovery file name" where c:\your recovery file name is the exact location and name of the recovery file you downloaded.
You should now have a S-OFF phone with a custom recovery
I open command prompt, and it opens to "C:\Users\Matt>". I am using the 'cd' command to get to "C:\>", and then typing exactly this after it:
I've tried not using the 'cd' command, from my user folder, from the C:\android-sdk-windows\tools then typing as before, but none of it seems to work.
Can anyone help? I can provide more information if needed, but as all the previous steps went well and worked, you can just assume anything from before this step. Thank you (:
I now seem to have got past that fastboot problem, and booting with the VOL DOWN key held gets me into the menu with the RECOVERY option. I have the recovery file su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip in the root of my sd card.
When I select the recovery option, the screen goes to HTC on a white background, then a blackground with a green symbol on it, and then to a phone icon with a red triangle and exclamation mark on it. It never gives me the option to load a file from sd card.
The red triangle stays there until I pull the battery. Could I be using the wrong recovery file? I'm trying to root the phone, but not load a new rom.
UPDATE: A bit of searching found the VOL UP + POWER command. That got me into system recovery <3e>. On the lower part of the screen it says
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command.
If I go the option Apply update from sd card, select the file su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, I get:
<VOL UP> TO PREVIOUS ITEM
<VOL DOWN> TO NEXT ITEM
<POWER> TO SELECT ITEM
BOOTLOADER (highlighted)
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN
I've also tried both the 2.3.6.3 version mentioned in the main guide and the 3.0.7 version I found which I believe to just be a newer version of the Superuser files, but I'm not 100% sure so it may never work if it's not meant for the Desire. Can someone please confirm this and tell me which SU file to go with, whether I should use the older version in the guide or the newest one?

Exactly the same for me.

My VOL UP+POWER doesn't seem to bring up anything except loading the phone as usual, am I doing something stupid? I also feel like I'm missing something really simple and can't get my head around what it is. I'm quite technically minded, I know what I'm doing here to an extent, but as I have never rooted before, I'm unsure about what isn't happening right and really don't want to mess around testing things and end up with a bricked phone. If someone could point me in the right direction, then great.
P.S.: sorry about the long message, just needed to get all the details and problems across... xD
Oh god I missed the error first time round. Silly me. You dont fastboot flash zip files you ninnies .
You fastboot flash a recovery.img first then you boot into that using the menu and then use recovery to flash the zip file. That zip file is a root file, not recovery..... You're missing the step.
Have you downloaded the recovery image of your choice yet? Look at step 2 e.

Thank you very much! Now rooted. What threw me was that in the guide I read it that Gingerbread users should skip the Unrevoked part and go straight to the Revolutionary section.
As a teacher once said to me " Read whats on the page, not what you think is on the page ! "
Now off to remove the HTC unlock slider.

Right, first off, I'm now S-Off'd and rooted on my Desire (had to use the Revolutionary method as I had Gingerbread 2.3.3). Anyway, it has all gone well, I can tell as I have the Superuser file in my apps and I have Amon-Ra custom recovery installed.
The only reason I wanted to root was due to the low internal storage, and I am unsure of what I now need to do to get apps on to a partition on the SD card. Here's what I have done so far with regards to that:
Using the custom recovery (Amon-Ra), I partitioned 1GB (with 0MB swap) off the SD card. I then 'upgraded' the partition to EXT3, and didn't upgrade further to EXT4 as the guides seem to suggest no advantage on Android and possible complications. But I'm not sure what I need to do now? I'm aware I need to create some kind of 'link' to make the phone use the partition in addition to the internal storage? Is this where I use the Gparted part of the guides? Because from what I can tell, that's about creating partitions but I've already created one...
If someone could point out all I need to do to 'trick' the phone into using the partition I created, that'd be great.
Note: I haven't installed a custom ROM or anything, I'm happy with the Desire stock ROM, and don't wan't to change this, just want to be able to have apps on the SD card partition...
Thanks (:

Reason: Extra info
Thanks to Mattb81 for the great tutorial and for SUroot for the helpful tips.
The only problem I encountered was booting on HBoot. I had a longer time figuring this out than doing the actual S-Off and rooting process ... I finally figured out that i need to remove and replace the batttery to reset the memory.
Edit: It is just now that I read the posts re removing the battery. My bad, didn't read all the comments before proceeding.
Dear friends,
I would like to know what happend... every think i did ok. but when i going to sound(-) + power. choosing "Recovery menu" i have about 6seconds white monitor with HTC and then black. Nothing working. If I push "round" button, the phone restarts.
Can you help me? I cant put ICE
Which recovery did you flash? Please give all details of your phone
Hello,

7) Now for rooting:
a) Boot into Hboot (from off, hold vol-down and power) and choose "Recovery" from the menu. And here i stopped. choosing "Recovery menu" i have about 6seconds white monitor with HTC logo and then black. Nothing working. If I push "round" button, the phone restarts.
Can you help me? I cant put ICE
b) Choose "flash zip from SD card" or similar from Recovery menu (use trackpad to navigate)
c) Choose the Root file you downloaded to your SD card from the Revolutionary website.

Sounds like the S-Off worked but for whatever reason installing the recovery did not. That leaves 2 possibilities: either you did something wrong at that stage, or your copy of the recovery is bad. So could you check the md5 of your recovery, and tell us exactly what you did to install it?

Got to run now, but don't panic, this is fixable.
Thank you,
ok. Intresting how to chek MD5?
Ok. How I install recovery.
1. I did fastboot (-sound and power)
2. I went to fastboot, by presting (power)
3. On top of monitor i so "FASTboot usb"
4. Run on PC cmd
5. In cmd line: fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery1.img (recovery i downloaded from here. from first page "Amon-Ra 2.0.1 "
6. ON PC MONITOR:" sending 'recovery' (3936 KB)... OKAY [ 0.601s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 1.202s]
finished. total time:1.813s
7. In phone menu I have pushed "POWER DOWN"
The phone restarted in normal. I did power off. Then (-sound and POWER) and went to recovery. White screen ~6s. with HTC logo. And then black screen. And thats all...

The All Things Root Guide sticky includes a post on md5 verification, and the useful downloads (toolbox) thread (linked from same sticky) includes another Windows-based md5 tool.
I've downloaded Amon Ra 2.0.1 from both this guide and the toolbox thread, and checked they were identical. The md5 code for these is 528d44d511a27eb30c3105ed54078130, so if you get the same for your copy it should be OK.

Hmm, that all looks OK to me, apart from the result! The file size is right for Amon Ra 2.0.1 as well.
Check the md5. If that look OK, just try flashing again. If that doesn't work, let us know and we'll see what we can come up with.
