You'll find a link to a list of ROMs in the All Things Root Guide sticky post. Pick something simple, like a rooted stock ROM (such as Teppic74's) just to get the phone working.
there must be something wrong as I didn't find anyone to have the same problem with that original post then me. As I got all the way down to step 6, I am referring to

7c) the root file dled from the revolutionary website? Sure about that?
I know I am just a beginner but does the revol...file (4a) not do the S-OFF thing already?
Obviously I misunderstand something, so I didn't go ahead. But as U can see in my quote the "root file" is defined in step 4b and that refers to the su...file but on the *goo-inside.me* page.
As I assume su stands for superuser I am not sure that really is the file to flash.
Sorry for that newbie question but I read quite a lot of posts in that threat and I dont wanna fail

Thanx for clarification

Revolutionary does S-Off (step 5). Once you have S-Off you can flash a custom recovery (step 6), and once you have a custom recovery you can use that to actually root the phone (step 7).
And yes, there are references to 2 superuser packages here! 4b gives a link to one, and the Revolutionary wiki has a link to a second (slightly newer) one. TBH either should work.
If you want to be really safe, you could try an extra step first: having booted into recovery (step 7a) select the "backup and restore" menu and make a backup. When that is done, procede to step 7b and flash the superuser package. That way you have a backup of you ROM prior to rooting, so if anything were to go wrong you could restore the unrooted ROM and try again. But I don't expect anything to go wrong with flashing superuser.
Oh, and one more thing: these days we recommend 4Ext Touch recovery over ClockworkMod or Amon Ra for the Desire. You can find a "direct download" link in the first post of the XDA thread.

Let me just state that I dont complain here. I think the instruction is really great piece of work. I just wanna show where I got lost:
I didnt realize the instruction refers 2 different su packages. After U mentioned the WIKI I researched one more time the revolutionary page and on the documentation page for that tool I then found the root file but down at the Q&A section.
Once agin I dont complain, I just feel that could be misinterpreted. At least I did not get it right without yr help.

thanx a lot for that step extra. Like you I know nothing should go wrong but with ANDROID I often get on the unlucky side, so I will take that step extra

Yes, this is a well known issue. It happens if you skip step 3.
Absolutely - fladh su from recovery.
You use that command to change your recovery.
I'm trying to save it to the SD card. When I boot up the phone, select recovery. Hold up volume and press the power and select apply sdcard:update.zip. It says no such file or directory. E: signature varification failed.
Firstly, did you rename it "update.zip"? If not, it won't find it if you select that option.
But you should not rename it. Just copy the file to sd, boot into recovery, then choose the option to select file from sd, navigate to the file and select it. The drawback with renaming things as "update.zip" is that the name no longer tells you what the file is, so IMO you should never do that.
If it still doesn't work, then there's an option in the recovery menu "toggle signature verification". Select that, which does exactly what it says, then try applying the zip again.

I've not renamed it. Its still called superuserEtc.zip
Not got an option about signature verification
Top option says reboot system now.
You don't have a custom recovery - that's the original HTC recovery still. Follow the bit in the guide about flashing a custom recovery again (from memory I think that may be step 6). Then you can flash the root patch.
I recommend 4Ext touch recovery. On phone app so hard to link, but there is a link in my signature. Ignore the apps for now and look for the direct download links in the first post. If you have a SIM card you want the "GSM" one. Download that .img to your computer and use the "fastboot flash recovery" command to install it.

Ah ha, success! Will get back to you once I've rooted it
I followed this guide step by step, pretty basic. But i have a strange problem. The CWM Recovery doesn't read my SD Card. But if i mount USB storage, it pops right up in Windows. The first time, i formatted the SD Card from stock ROM, but since that didn't work, i tried to format it as FAT32 win Win7, still no go. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Nevermind, worked using Amon-Ra

For reference, as an alternative to the recoveries recommended in the first post, you can use 4Ext Touch recovery.
If you go to the XDA thread for 4Ext Touch you will find in the first post 2 "direct download" links, for GSM and CDMA devices. Download the correct one for your device, unzip, and you can fastboot flash the recovery .img as described in the guide. I would recommend this above either of the 2 recoveries linked in the first post.

downgrade
hi guys,
i first updated my phone with the official ruu to 2.3.3. i like to downgrade my rom now to 2.2.2 again because it i have to much problems with the 2.3.3 system. could any of you tell me how to dow this? btw i used this guide as well to get s-off and rooted which succeded in that. but i only like to downgrade my system and than get s-off and rooted again. so how do i do this?
thanks in advance.
Hey Guys,
Total new comer here - to be honest I don't totally know what is going on even after reading all the guides a few times - so many new terms and names and options is all a bit bewildering.
I was reading the guide though and going through the steps it says to download the clockworkmod thingywhatsit but it needs a user name and password - I can't find it anywhere - the provided link does not work
any ideas?
all I really want to do is sort out this low memory problem that seems to have started recently on my Desire Bravo
There's a updated version of this guide in another thread (linked from the sticky post in this forum, or a couple of posts above this). Would be worth checking that, as one thing it includes is another recovery suggestion.
You can find username and password in the download thread - look near end of thread for latest password.
I'm trying to root my HTC Desire CDMA but my HBOOT seems too new for anything I got all the way to running Revolutionary S-OFF but it only works with HBOOT 1.06.0000 while my phone has HBOOT 1.09.0000. I can't use the guide listed here either as my HBOOT is too new.
I believe 1.09 is the officially unlockable bootloader for CDMA devices. Does it say "locked" at the top of the hboot screen? That indicates that the bootloader is unlockable.
If so, neither revolutionary nor unrevoked will work. The hboot downgrading tool I'm aware of is for GSM, so should absolutely not be used on a CDMA handset.
So that leaves 2 options:
1) Try to find a downgrade method that is safe on a CDMA handset. Be careful, as messing with hboots is one of the few ways you can really brick a Desire.
2) Use the official bootloader unlock.
The second won't give you full S-Off, but should let you flash a custom recovery, which will then allow you to root your ROM or flash a custom ROM.
To do this, go to HTCdev.com and follow the instructions for unlocking the bootloader. You don't need to update your software if you have 1.09, so ignore any stuff about running an RUU to update the phone. The site will tell you how to generate and load an unlock key (you'll need fastboot set up on your computer to do this - they have instructions there, otherwise this guide links to instructions on how to do this). Unlocking will perform a factory reset, which means that it's important to back up any important data before doing this.
Once the bootloader is unlocked you can follow the steps in this guide for downloading a compatible custom recovery, flashing it, then using it to root the ROM. Basically the bootloader unlock does what revolutionary does, just a little less completely.
The main differences between this and revolutionary (S-Off) are that you won't be able to fastboot flash radio or hboot (but there are few CDMA radios and no custom hboots for CDMA, so that's less of a restriction) and won't be able to modify /system while running android (so uninstalling unwanted system apps is more work). But it will let you do most stuff.
1) Try to find a downgrade method that is safe on a CDMA handset. Be careful, as messing with hboots is one of the few ways you can really brick a Desire.
2) Use the official bootloader unlock.
First - thank you for helping a newbie.
I'm trying option number 2, but when I get to step 5 on the HTC website I don't have the file it requires me to open:
Run the “SDK Manager.exe” which is found in \android-sdk-windows\
All I have there is a folder called tools. They have an image on their website showing a bunch of stuff I don't have. Have I hit a wall again?
Ok, I made it through a few more steps! My HBoot is unlocked, I added a custom recovery, and I tried to root.
Following step 7 I booted into HBoot and selected recovery. My phone got hung up on the HTC screen until I removed the battery. It restarted ok, but I'm worried to try the same step again.
I suggest looking at the updated revolutionary guide. There's a link in there to a CDMA version of 4Ext Touch recovery which you could try (it's important to get the CDMA version).
Thank you for linking the other thread, I didnt see it until after I had posted. The problem was in the recovery, when flashed the recovery from the other thread it worked just fine. I am now an owner of a newly rooted HTC Desire. I now just have no idea what to do with my power.

Another step for another day.
The next step is probably to select a custom ROM from XDA

Excellent guide, thanks very much. The links for CWM and the superuser zip are dead I believe (there is a superuser zip linked on the Revolutionary site). Edit. Apologies - missed that closure notice.
