If you can't download apps does this mean that you don't have the Market application installed? Google apps are an add-on in CM, though almost everyone installs them.

If that's the problem, you can get the google apps from from Goo-inside.me Downloads - Browsing gapps . Try the 20110828 GB version, as that's what Kali suggested in the CM7.1 thread at XDA. Reading a ROM's XDA thread, certainly the first few posts and usually some of the recent ones, is generally a good idea.

I can't help with FB sync though, since I don't use Facebook (yes, there are still some of us!).

For facebok sync open the app, press menu, then settings, then scroll to the bottom and select sync contacts
