Default Which AOSP ROM?

My phone developed a problem a week or so ago & despite an enormous ammount of help & advice from the experts on here (Suroot, Hadron & Rastaman FB) I was left with no alternative but to send it away for repair. Assuming it is repairable it seems likely that when I get it back it will be returned to stock.

I will almost certainly root it again & install an AOSP ROM but the threads on XDA give precious little information on the actual user experience. Sure they all say they are smooth & stable but they wouldn't be much of a ROM if they weren't! I was using dGB prior to my problems & may well go back to that. It gave me a whopping 250mb of free internal space when using stock apps2sd. Clearly I could get by with a slightly bigger system partition but what do I get for the extra megabytes?

I know ROM choice is very subjective but may be this thread could help some of us noobs make an informed choice so what are your personal recommendations and why?

you wont get bigger data from any other rom that DGB
as AOSP stock roms are concerned the main candidates are
DGB with a custom hboot for best space usages and pretty good battery life
Mildwild oxygen build - good but subtle eye candy and excellent battery life
Oxygen itself
CM7 is ok but is a battery drain and imo too dull for the amount of stuff that is loaded into it

these are in personal order of preference though and again people like different things for different reasons

my desire has remained on the latest DGB
my wifes desire is on mildwild. her battery life is awesome

I'd also consider Redux 2. Been out of development for a while now but has been rock solid for me over the past few months. Will fit into a sub 100mb partition to if that's your thing.

It's stock with a few nice add-ons.

My list is pretty similar to Rastaman's. I use dGB myself, but could recommend MildWild/Oxygen, or Redux (2 for me, though 1.2 is good too). CM7 if you like a lot of extras, or you could try GingerVillain which is based on that - I used those two a lot last year, but have been heading steadily towards smaller and more streamlined ROMs.

I'd say that if you are going to go without a2sd+ and use a small /system partition to maximise /data space, then dGB is the way to go. If you would prefer to use sd-ext then MildWild Oxygen seems a pretty good choice right now.

Mildwild is getting a lot of attention.. I just can't be bothered with the farce of changing hboot and trying it. Is this to my detriment? Also, which hboot should I use for it? I may put off flashing the new dGB build for another week.

CM7r2 wouldn't work with dGB for me - too much stuff on my phone.

I stripped MildWild down to the point where I could fit it in 80 MB, but I think out of the box it's over 100.

But I'd not put off flashing the latest dGB - you can just flash over the previous one, and it's very good.

Question

Thanks for the replies. They are most helpful, please keep them coming.

I'm leaning towards returning to dGB or trying mildwild. Does anyone know if the Mildwild based on Oxygen fits onto Bravo Oxygen r2 hboot?

I'm spring cleaning and backing up now. I'm formatting my SD Card (as I still have my 1gb ext3 partition still present) and going to install the new dGB. Mildwild shall wait I think.

Cup of tea and I think I'll have Full Metal Jacket on in the background. Sounds good to me.

Edit: I'm going to watch The Big Lebowski instead. Something a bit more chilled out.

Can you flash a UOT theme over the top? No wipe etc? Just curious as I was looking at UOT today and there's a wait of 50 minutes. I'm too inpatient for that.

I'm generating a theme right now. On about my 6th attempt. They really need more styles in the the custom uni-colour section.

Quick question for those who have tried dGB & Oxygen:

Would I notice the difference in battery life between the two? The reason I ask is that I'm often unable to recharge during the day & sometimes a little more battery life would be most helpful.

It's not that I thought that the dGB battery life was at all bad!

I have been playing around with 2 ROMs at the moment:
1. MIUI-XJ
2. Mildwild (Oxygen based v 2.9.5)

MIUI - Really pretty but fat. Also the XJ version does not update properly (MIUI gets update every week, so this is a pain) and there re too many things still in chinese. But this is def the most sleek ROM yet. Easy UI. But I m not planning on going back. If I do go back to MIUI I will go to the official US version. Why would I go back? A2SD+ works really well. I had bout 30 apps (no games) and never went below 130 mb.

Mildwild - Unfortunately I am not smart enough to do s-off and change h-boot yet so I have installed this on stock h-boot. Immediate problem is the space even with sd-ext enabled. Does not have A2SD+. UI is pretty basic with not much add-ons. However I m sticking with it at the moment because - It has great battery life. I charged it over night and it is at 59% late evening with normal use, calls, sms, theming and internet. Also I have noticed it is snappier than other ROMs I have seen. But that may just be because there is less on sd card and I have not themed it too much.

MildWild Oxygen comes with a2sd. You have to flash an extra patch if you want to move the dalvik cache though, which might be the cause of your space problem. It'll be linked from the rom thread, probably mentioned in the mildwild thread in this forum too.

Sorry, it wasn't at the start (I was thinking of the old Oxygen thread - though I expect the Oxygen solution would also work here). Look at this post in the MildWild thread. It has 2 versions of the apps2sd script, one for dalvik on internal, one for dalvik to sd. Replace the one in your /system/etc/init.d with the dalvik to sd version and you should gain several 10s of MB.

Nice Keyboard. Which is that?

Also - where's the directory for the custom boot animation?

Cheers

Yep its my old trusty themed HTC_IME mod, which I have always used as my main keyboard. It looks slightly different as I am using the font from the pull down (where it says dGB) as my main system font.

/data/local for bootanimation.zip

Cheers for both bits of info.

There is another post on the subject of scripts whch I was confused about - I think they are both the same scripts for apps2sd though- just from different people.

xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] [06.Feb]MildWild V-3.0Based on Oxygen 2.3.2

Now that MildWild3 is out there is a version with a2sd built it. Sadly it needs a clean install so I'll have to leave it until I have time to reinstall all my apps etc.

A little care - that looks like a data2sd script he's added, which is different from a2sd.

There is a version without this...

Edit: see post below. I think this one might be what you were wanting.

Follow up myself: the version without data2sd includes an a2sd script which looks like it will move dalvik too.
