Default Faulty power button and rooting

My htc desire was water damaged and the power button now no longer works (whatsoever). I have read that i can remap the buttons once it is rooted. However, one of the first steps in rooting seems to be putting the phone in hboot which involves using the power button. Is there any other way of finding out the hboot version?

nope.

Rooting involves a lot of turning the device on and off. I would look at getting it repaired.

Remapping the buttons whilst on is fine, but software cannot change which button is the power button when the phone is off.

No, thats not what I am saying at all.

You obviously can turn it off by pulling the battery out BUT you will never be able to turn it on every again, because the power button doesnt work.

And think about this... If you use software to change which button is the power button, that software will only be running (ergo the power button will only be changed) whilst the phone is on. As soon as you turn the phone off, the software stops running and the power button is now, well, the power button again. And you cannot turn it on.

What Im saying is get it repaired. No software, rooted or otherwise can save you now.
