Default HTC Desire Stock ROM

Hi Guys, you haven't heard from me in a while since I'm now flying along with a Galaxy Nexus But I mad a bit of a boo with my old Desire, which I've had leant to my friend for a while.

Before I sent my phone off to be tampered with by my total technophobe mate, I decided to try and get rid of anything dangerous they may do to the phone, such as using the backup/restore feature on CWM. Stupidly, I forgot to backup the backup that I made of my Sense ROM when I first rooted, and so have lost it.

I now want to start developing Android ROMS from scratch, by pulling the /system from the phone, but want to use my Desire first, so I don't brick the newest addition to my Android family.

So has anyone got a stock .zip of any Stock Desire ROM that can be flashed through CWM? FYI I don't want to un-root the phone to stock, I just want a sense ROM back as I won't really feel comfortable messing about with a ROM that has already been customised. My desire is a Vodafone GSM Desire.

Root is part of the ROM, so it sounds like what you want is a rooted stock ROM. We normally recommend teppic74's ROMs, which come in Froyo or Gingerbread. Not quite stock as they (a) are rooted and (b) have init.d support, but otherwise very close. Can find the threads in XDA (link in the All Things Root Guide sticky post if can't remember). The download servers may come and go, but I think that there are alternate links posted somewhere in the threads.

I can think of a way of getting you a pure stock unrooted ROM but still having a custom recovery, but it involved a bit more faffing around. From what you've said I think the above should be a decent starting point.

Thanks very much guys. And as for knowing what I'm doing, I'm fine with installing custom ROMS and things, so getting that .zip to run shouldn't be a problem. However, it's when I start trying to develop that you all need to get worried :P

Running that .zip will unroot your phone.

Ah right, well I'll use dsixda's kitchen to get root access on it. May as well start some cooking before I even flash the ROM

Hi ssoomm33aa, and welcome to AF

Any particular network or region? Assuming your phone is GSM you can get the RUU (ROM Update Utility) from here. If your phone is CDMA (no SIM card, mainly found on some North American networks) then the range is much smaller - there's an AllTel one here, a couple of Verizon ones here, but they are all very old.

Eclair is ancient - rather than install that you'd be better installing a Froyo ROM directly (or even the official Gingerbread if you prefer - that's in the shipped-ROMs GSM link above as well).

Do note that an RUU will wipe the phone, so back up all of your data before running it. They are Windows .exes (the 2.3 update is a zip, but unzip it and you'll find the .exe in there). Avoid anything that says "OTA" in the file name, and if you are unsure which one let us know more about your phone and we'll make some suggestions.

To install the official htc 2.3 update on a GSM phone (the type with a sim card) follow this guide:
[GUIDE] [GSM] UNroot GSM HTC Desire (Published 23rd May 2012)

If your phone is S-OFF start at step 1. However if it is still S-ON go straight to step 4.

That is, if you want to unroot and run stock software.

Otherwise your best bet would be a Gingerbread custom ROM. JB is pushing it a bit on this old hardware, but the GB ROMs run fine, and an AOSP ROM (no Sense) will be faster than the official Gingerbread or Froyo with Sense. The Desire All Things Root Guide sticky here includes a link to the list of ROMs at XDA-developers. If you want to use an ext partition to gain space I'd recommend Oxygen (or the MildWild ROM based on it), Redux, Redux2 or the MildWild ROM based on that. dGB is the smallest and fastest, but to get the most from it you need a custom HBOOT (and hence S-Off) as it doesn. Or you may like MIUI. I don't remember Sense ROMs very well.

If your phone one of the old AMOLED ones? If not you really don't want to use an Eclair RUU, because if you do manage to run it your screen won't work any more! The Desire switched to Froyo a few months after release, and later hardware revisions never had Eclair on them.

It contains a windows .exe file which will replace everything on your phone. That's ROM, Radio, hboot, user data, everything.

That update package is the official 2.3. 161MB is the correct size. If you want to run it you need to unzip it on a PC, put phone into fastboot mode (boot while pressing back button), connect phone via usb, run the .exe on the PC. It will unroot and factory reset the phone in the process.

Or you can try a different custom ROM from the list linked from the sticky post, as suggested earlier. There are ROMs there which definitely are faster.

You didn't follow the guide that I gave you a link to. What Hadron said in the above post is exactly what the guide tells you to do. Here it is:

Quote:
Please follow steps 4 - 6 if you have a HTC G7 Desire GSM and did NOT S-OFF OR have completed steps 1 - 3.

4) Download Shipped ROMs Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade.zip
and extract the .exe inside to your Windows computer

5) Boot phone to fastboot (from off hold back and press power) and connect usb. Wait for "fastboot" on the screen to be displayed as "Fastboot USB" which signifies a connection

6) Run the RUU.exe from windows PC. Follow the On (Computer) screen instructions.

If you can see the drive the phone is not in fastboot mode. Boot the phone up while pressing the back button, and you'll come to a white screen with a short menu and the word fastboot above the menu.

If something doesn't work, provide information on what did happen- you'll get to the answer much quicker that way. Your previous post said nothing about the ruu failing to run, but rather that you'd done it and nothing had changed. We knew this had to mean that it hadn't run, but until we had more information could not identify the problem.
