The Modern-Tech thingy works great, it was initially bought for Hero and survived quite a lot abuse. Good value for money.
As to the first post - this will fall apart within few bumps on the road. Had a similar one and it lasted a week.

Just ordered it without the charger. Amazon order confirmation at 13.27. Amazon shipping confirmation 14.52. Hell fire ...... Obviously a slow day at the warehouse .....
It was only £5.95 inc postage and I can confirm that it is well worth the money. It will hold your DHD in landscape or portrait (and can be rotated while the phone is in the holder) and it locks into place once adjusted.
Looking at the photos (same photo everywhere) this car holder from amazon looks like it just grips the phone from the sides. Can anyone confirm that it supports the phone from the top and bottom too? or is it going to slide out each time i press the power button to unlock it?
also, does it allow room for the charge cable?

You probably cant see it in the photo, but there are little legs at the bottom which flip out, allowing the phone to rest on the bottom before you grip it to the sides. There isn't anything holding it on the top, however I've been using it over all manners of bumps etc and it hasn't budged.. Its pretty rock solid..
From Amazon:
Note: There isn't any sort of funny picture on the background on mine, just foam for it to rest on..
Theres more than enough space for your connectors, and as I said before, with the phone jack and power at the bottom, the phone's well suited as a SatNav

If the HD is anything like the Standard Desire I recommend you look for an air vent mount. Using google maps navigation draws around 750ma. A good charger supplies 1000ma (and you need a good one or it will not keep up) combine that with a windscreen mount on a hot day = overheat and shutdown or on occasion meltdown!

It's OK. I have this quaint old device in my car called air conditioning ...

That explains why my battery had managed to drop down to nothing while plugged into the car charger, and navigating. Maybe the £2 USB Socket Car Charger wasn't such a good idea

I use a pukka Nokia charger as I had problems with the plethora of cheapo chargers I had not charging my last phone (E71). I had a couple that wouldn't charge it at all and one that would only charge it with the engine off. Pukka Nokia one is fine. At least so far ....
Oh, just to add, I've bought a pukka Nokia adaptor cable for it (Nokia round pin to micro-USB) so it works with the DHD.

Got it today and fitted it. Tucked nicely out of the way down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (right hand drive as I'm in the UK!). Seems a lot sturdier then the previous one I had (one of the flexi-arm ones bought from Halfords) but not been out on the road yet.

I got this and tried this today. First journey was OK. It held the phone fine. I removed it from the screen and for the second journey it refused to attach to the windscreen. I will try it again tomorrow.
Having used a Tom Tom 550 I find it's mount sucker very good. It attaches to the screen easily. I think I'll get the official HTC mount when it comes in stock next month. It looks simpler and more compact as well as have an integrated USB attachement.

Preparation is usually the key to making sure these things stick properly. Make sure the screen is clean and dry first. Ensure the mounting contact surface is also clean and push it on so as much air as possible is squeezed out first. I usually find that it may take one or two attempts to get it sticking right but, when stuck, it's stuck ....
I have my Desire in a gel coat. I took a punt on a Galaxy holder. The Galaxy (9000s I think) is just few mm bigger. The holder works a treat. I hve the style that cups 2 corners, with a relase down the opposite edge. About £6 off ebay including 12V charger.

thanks I'll give it a shot...I remove the mount each time I leave the car so if in the long run I need to keep cleaning the screen and mount then I know I am going to get fed up and opt for the genuine one.
It does look good, but it should be for 5x what I paid for mine .... But how about a DHD with a case of any sort? Particularly one of the 'skin'-type cases. Would that still fit or do you have to take the case off first?
It does look good, yes. If anything, it needs a longer neck but other than that, it's a lovely piece of kit.
The sucker is especially strong, as others have said.
It won't fit in the holder with any sort of skin or sock - it's already a tight fit.
A quick note about the plug - the bit that goes into the bottom of the handset when it's in the holder - not only does it tilt forward so that it lines up with the handset during insertion, but it slides sideways, presumably to accommodate phones that have their socket in a slightly different place.
Biker Bob, the S440 (official HTC kit) isn't out in the UK until 3rd December - I'm getting one then. Some of the air vent holders get a mixed bag of reviews look at mobilefun web site.
It won't AC charge the phone. It reports only getting a USB charge. The S440 comes with the full and proper HTC charger, which, when I plug it direct into the phone, does give an AC charge, but when I plug the charger into the holder and put the phone in it, it only gets a USB charge.
The problem with this is that a USB charge can't keep up with satnav, where an AC charge can.
There must be a problem with the wiring inside the S440.
In regard to the CU S440 car kit, does it look the same as in the picture on htc's web site, as the description given here, about the way the phone sits in the holder, is different from how it looks on the htc web site.
I am interested in one of these holders, as the cheap one I got off amazon, is OK but the phone does vibrate about a bit, when it is in the holder.
I have the htc car kit for the desire, and it is perfect, no vibration, held firmly in the holder, and looks good as well, if the CU S440 is as good as the CU S420 for the desire, then it will be a must for me.
Can anyone with the holder, please post a picture of it, so I can see what it looks like.
OK after heading out in the car for something, I had a play with the CU S420 car kit for my Desire, and found what had been described earlier about the mini usb connector being able to slide. I can only assume therefore that (pauleden) has the CU S420 rather than the CU S440 car kit. correct me if I am wrong, it is just that, on all the web sites I have looked, the CU S440 is shown exactly the same as on the htc web site. The cable being placed in the bottom of the phone, as opposed to being inserted into the suction cup.
As I have no car charger yet I cannot say, but I made the following finding today: I happened to have a USB connector for the car (lighter) at home, and if I use that together with the HTC USB cable, the phone charges as USB-connected. But if I plug in the USB plug with male-female connectors in each end that came with the DHD between the car socket and the cable, the phone charges as AC-connected.
As per my post #15, the Nokia charger I have is the DC-4 and when I plug the DHD into this it says 'AC charging' (or charging ac, whichever way around it is!). Get the GENUINE charger though.
Looking around it seems that it's made for the HD2 but works for the DHD. Has anyone here got it? Does it work properly for the DHD? Is there a problem with the power button being hidden at the top?
Also the main question, instead of connecting the car charger that comes with it to the base, connect an FM transmitter and will it work?
@Pauleden:
I was just reading the thread about the Desire HD car holder. Is it the ~£25 CU S440 for the desire HD that you have or the ~£60 CU S400 for the HTC HD (but also fits the desire)?
If it's the s440, does it look like it does in the photos on htc and mobilefun.co.uk websites?
Thanks for the reply
As much as I like the s400, better looking and the ability to drop the phone in rather than having to connect the power lead separately, I think I'll go for the desire hd specific s440. Mainly on price and ability to plug into the headphone socket!
I got my S440 today (some stock appears to have arrived at Mobile Fun finally!). Gave it a quick try at lunchtime, went for a half hour drive with sat nav on and it appeared to charge the phone at the same time as running the sat nav. Battery was about 60% when I left, was full when I got there. Haven't actually confirmed that the charger is doing 100mAh but it certainly looks like it.
The S440 is supposed to allow you to attach to the dashboard as well, but can't quite see how that works at the moment - the windscreen sucker doesn't seem to want to stick to the dashboard..

Got mine today as well. Half a month later.
I'm still looking for a good FM transmitter for this phone. Why is it so hard for this?

Confirmed this morning that whilst plugged in to the car the DHD indicates 'Charging (AC)'.
Also can't see how this is supposed to work on the dashboard, it certainly does not stick to mine and that was the main reason I went for it (and waited since ordering it on 6th December!).
Pretty disappointed at this point in time!
I'd expect them to include a solid disc with a sticky back that you can attach to your dash. You can then attach your sucker to this instead of the screen!
It seems strange not to include it

No such thing included in my box, and no indication that there should be one. I wonder if they've changed the product?
I wish the S440 worked with a case. It really isn't practical for me to take my Otterbox off every time I want to use it in the car.
I suppose this means I'll have to buy a holder and HTC car charger separately. Doesn't half get expensive!
Know what you mean - I was looking at the S440 this morning and found myself wondering if it was really worth the ~£30 I paid for it. HTC official stuff appears to be expensive..
I use one of these Breffo - Consumer Electronics Accessories, ideal as you can use it for more than just your phone. I originally got it for my TomTom but holds Desire just as well
