Despite being adamant I was never getting a case for it, I dropped it on the laminate floor in my hallway within a week of getting it and the battery cover came of and the battery fell out. I then invested in a cheap silicone case and when I got paid, I bought the Otterbox Commuter.

That must've been a serious drop to have knocked the cover off
I run the otterbox defender series ya it is a little bulky but im in the woods alot and work in heavy industry. It is great i love the look the feel and knowing that my investment is as well protected as it can be.

Naked and treated my Desire the same. Don't like the feel of silicone or plastic. Screen protectors are pants for me as I can never get em on without a bubble appearing somewhere lol
The otterbox doesn't feel too bad, actually feels a bit more sturdy and less likely to slip out my hand. The power and volume buttons are more responsive as well.
Having said that, after a few weeks I probably won't care about a few scratches and do away with the case!

Mine was second hand, so already had a screen protector/silicone case supplied.
The Desire HD's size makes me paranoid about it being in pockets/handbag so I bought a Proporta leather case (aluminium lined)..now £10 cheaper than I bought if for, from ebay. £19.49 now. You can still squeeze it in there with the silicone case on.
Proporta do it as a case or a pouch (I bought the case).

Screen Protectors on both DHDs
x1 Top-Flip Case / x1 Side-Flip Case
With hindsight, I should have gone for x2 Side-Flip -- the microUSB port is obscured by the closure strap on the Top-Flip
I first put on a screen skin from BestSkinsEver. I used them before for an old BB and was happy, but I gotta say, this one didn't go on smooth. And in my pocket with keys, the screen looks all wretched now. I ordered a new "thin glass" screen cover off Ebay now.
Also, I put on a silicone skin from ebay. I was surprised actually at how well it fit. And it's the right blend of smooth and rubber. Smooth enough to slide into my pocket, sticky enough to lay on my centre console in the car to act as a GPS. Here's the link.
And yes, due to the sheer size and weight of this phone, I can't imagine going very long with no protection.

Yeah, the screen protectors aren't anywhere near as tough as the actual screen. The link is broken now, do you have a name for it so I can look it up?
This link is for the silicone skin I tried to link above. Search out bestbuy99 on ebay to find it.
This link is for the screen I just ordered, from the same place. Again, you can find them on ebay. Hopefully it goes on well. I hate when a bad screen ruins the pretty picture of a device.
That looks really rubbery, are you sure it doesn't stick in your pocket. Even the otterox commuter does a bit, with the rubber that is exposed around the edge.
I guess there is a bit of stickiness, but I don't wear tight jeans, so I honestly have NO PROBLEMS sticking it into my pocket. And I find it has the right amount of stickiness because I can rest it on my centre console in my car, and it doesn't slide left or right when I make a turn.
The main reason I recommend it though is that it actually fits the phone well. I had a BB Torch previously, and some of these skins I came across didn't fit at all. Also, fwiw, this skin also has a little "flare" around the camera lens, so the skin protects the camera lens when you put the phone down on its back.
Been using the Case Mate "barely there" for about a week now and its nice and thin but adds an extra level of protection, coupled with a quality screen protector yopu can hardly tell your using either

Back in the game, what did I miss?
I have a carbon look hard plastic kinda thing for the rear of mine, with a clear screen stick on thingie on the front.. spent ages getting its right with no bubbles.
I have used an Otterbox Defender from new on mine and although a bit bulky I am really pleased with it, and it gives me peace of mind.
I recently managed to snap the beltclip off and contacted Otterbox to see if they do a replacement holster only, they did and sent me one free of charge.
An excellent company to deal with and highly recommended.
