Couple of quick questions - (sorry about all the questions!)
Is doing a backup just a failsafe incase something happens, or does flashing this kernel wipe anything?
Can I download and use the kernel without doing any of the undervolted stuff for now, and maybe try that in the near future? Is it possible to just download the 7.3-CFS-MIUI and run that?

Don't worry about the questions, that's what we're here for!
The kernel just controls some of the basic hardware functions of the phone. It's sort of like the middle man between the H/W and Android. As a result, the backup is just a failsafe, the kernel won't wipe anything.
When I first flashed 7.3, I didn't realise you had to do any file swapping etc (it wasn't mentioned in the thread) and as a consequence, my battery was dead in about 10 hours. I restored the backup I'd made before I flashed and it was fine. I posted in his thread and that's when I found out that you needed to mess about a bit to get it work properly. Incidentally, I flashed the file I attached last night and the battery issues are gone (whilst sleeping, I'd a 5% loss in 8.5 hours).
Just flashing the kernel will be fine. If the undervolt stuff seems a little daunting, I'm positive you'll see enough of an improvement with his standard settings.
Edit: For some strange reason, I did a ROM backup, rebooted and now the connection between phone and computer works So i'll download the kernel now and have a play later on

Flashed the kernel and am currently running at -25mV, everything is running smoothly Battery has seen a massive improvement Going to try going to -50 and then further this evening. Did the file you attached come with a reset script in case something goes wrong?

Yeah, you can reset via the app or if you can't boot, pull the battery, and boot into CWM by holding volume down and powering up again, then select recovery. Once there, select install from zip, navigate to the restuv folder and flash the reset zip.
Yeah the USB is working fine now Managed to get my ROM backups off my phone and have in turn backed them up several times so I know I will have them somewhere or another
Try installing HTC Sync and the Android SDK if both aren't already installed?
Hey thanks for your help. Just to let you know I despaired of windows and ran ubuntu off CD (Download | Ubuntu) and after some fumbling around in terminal was able to flash my phone using this tool. Big thanks to the guys who wrote it.
Now running CM7 and my its like having a whole new, mega fast phone. Amazing!
Although I do miss the sense goodies so might end up flashing to a sense 3 rom. Any particular recommendations?

I don't run Sense ROM's (haven't really missed Sense too much myself), but many have said that LeeDroid is good (you can flash Sense 3 on that) or there are plenty of others (check this list out too - andrdcndy: HTC Desire HD Custom ROM List)
Hope that helps!

I set it at -50 last night, and it's running so smoothly I don't think buttery smooth is a good enough analogy I did have an issue last night of my phone not charging whatsoever, either via USB or just plugged into the wall, but it seems to be fine now. Battery is outstanding, was using it for about 3 hours almost constantly (games, facebook etc) and it went down 20%
Make sure HTC USB Drivers for Android are installed (included in the Hack Kit @ tools/windrivers)
Disable all malware detection, including Windows Defender
Uninstall HTC Sync
Uninstall Droid Explorer
Uninstall iTunes or stop service
Uninstall ALL other phone pda or tablet software
but yet when i right click to run hack-ace.cmd, it just blink for like 1 sec then turn off itself. I can't really open it!!! Can anyone help me out? i not even started yet!!!
i use command prompt to run hack-ace.cmd and it shows this :
Ace advanced hack kit
killing htc sync process if it exists...
'tasklist' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

Basically, if tasklist is missing from your computer, you shouldn't runt he hack kit on it. The newest version traps that error and reports it.
If that program, which is supposed to be on your PC is missing from your windows ENV, then your windows installation is FUBAR and you should not be using it that way to hack smartphones.
Your best two options are:
Try a 32 bit Ubuntu LiveCD
Try another PC that isn't screwed up.
With a clean Windows environment and properly installed drivers from the hack kit, it typically takes just under 6 minutes, start to finish.
If your ENV is fouled up, it can take you far longer to troubleshoot it than it would to download and start the PC with the Linux Live CD and run the hack kit from there.
Thanks Attn1, for all the info. But i already solved it yesterday. It appears that my Windows XP Home does not have a 'tasklist.exe'. Just to share with you all, you just need to download 'tasklist.exe' then put in system32 folder and run it. Then you can already run the Hack Kit.
I have ran the Hack Kit! It's superbly successful. Thanks again!!! Now flashing my new ROM ARHD 6.1, hehehe....
So the new version of Lordmod's Kernel came out (seems like I am getting addicted to doing stuff to my phone now and want to try it )
Will I have to change some of the files around in the zip, and also have to download the MIUI version again? Unfortunately I don't have enough posts on xda to post on that thread

Gotta love little touches like that!
First up, get Titanium Backup on there to backup your apps and the data associated with them. When you flash your ROM, you wipe your previous one. TB will let you restore your apps and data to the state they were before the new ROM was installed. I'd recommend the paid version too, it makes things a lot easier and it allows you to batch restore and link the apps back to the market again. With the free version, it only lets you restore 1 app at a time. Totally up to you though.
What you do after that? Fire in with your custom ROM My personal choice is CM 7.1, it's miles away from the stock offering (it's pure Android with none of the Sense nicities), but ultra smooth and very customisable. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I can't see past it now. If you're looking at Sense ROMs, there's ARHD, LeeDroid or RCMIX (I think that's what it's called). If you're looking for something totally different, you can always try MIUI.

Attached. You'll need to undervolt again (via the app, no need to flash the UV zip again) but you won't need to mess about with stability testing this time. Just fire straight in with whatever you were using on 7.3.
Edit: Actually added the attachment this time.

There's an option within TB to upload which saves you having to do things manually.
No issues at all with that mate, I start nights tomorrow so might not be around much during the day/early evening. If you do get stuck, there'll be others about to help if you need it.
With Cyanogen, ROM Manager can pretty much handle the install for you. What I'll do later on tonight though, is write up instructions on how to do it manually. ROM Manager is quick and easy, but I think it's always best to learn the hard way first. You're better equipped to deal with problems if things goes wrong that way.

Before you start, make sure your contacts are google contacts, open your gmail account via a PC, then select Contacts. You should see a list of the numbers on your phone. If not, this will import your contacts into google. Your apps etc will have been backed up with Titanium.
This looks a lot by the way, but it's pretty straightforward.
1. Open Titanium, hit Menu -> More -> Create Update.zip
2. You want Edify, User Application & Call it Titanium XXX.zip, then hit create
3. Place the main Update-cm-7.1.0-DesireHD-signed zip and the gapps package on the root of your SD Card.
4. Place the LordmodUE zip attachment on the root of your SD Card.
5. Open ROM Manager, look at the top option, if the current recovery isn't ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0, hit Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery. If you get a prompt to chose your handset, it should hopefully be an easy choice . Let it do its thing.
6. Still in ROM Manager, press "Reboot into Recovery", after a 30 seconds or so, your phone will boot into clockwork.
7. You'll need to use the Volume Keys to navigate the different menus, and the power button to select, scroll down to Backup & Restore and take a backup of your current ROM (I cannot stress how important this is). It may take anything up to 10 minutes.
8. Once completed, head to the "Mounts and Storage" menu and from there, individually format the system, data & cache partitions. You'll need to confirm each one which can be annoying, but it will hopefully stop mistakes. Don't format the boot partition. Don't reboot.
9. Head back into the main menu in clockwork and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset (Again, you'll need to confirm).
10. Once completed, select "Install Zip from SD Card"
11. Scroll down to the update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-DesireHD zip and select, again confirm. This will install CM7 on your device.
12. Once complete, head back to the main menu, then select "Install Zip from SD Card" again, this time selecting the gapps-gb-20110828 zip.
13. Once that's done, select install from SD Card again and select the TB update zip you created at the start of the process.
14. Once finished, head back into the main menu, select "Reboot Now". First boot might take somewhere in the region of 10 minutes. If you get stuck on the loading animation for longer than that, pull the battery, then head back into CWM by powering the handset back on whilst holding volume down, then selecting Recovery in HBOOT. You can either try the above again, or restore the backup you made and start from step 6.
15. If it boots properly, read Xyro's post below to see about the skipping google sign in etc. Disclaimer: I'm slightly hazy on this side of the process as it's been a while since I've done it. It might be easier if you just sign into the google account now, let the apps reinstall themselves, then restore the data with TB. If anyone reading this wants to confirm what I'm typing is correct, feel free.
16. Titanium should have appeared in your app drawer, Open it, hit menu, batch, "Restore All apps with Data". You'll be presented with a list of apps you previously had installed on the handset, deselect anything that looks like it was remotely related to HTC/Sense and don't restore it. To be sure you don't, see Xyro's post below. Let it run its course, it might take a while.
17. Once finished, sign in to your gmail account and access the market, if you see your apps in the My Apps section, good. If not, head back into Titanium, then hit menu, market tools, market doctor. Select all the apps you believe you've downloaded via the market, then hit "restore market links" The next steps are optional, you're flashing a new kernel. I find what you're about to flash gives you pretty good battery/performance improvements over the standard CM7 kernel though so it's worth it
18. Once you're confident all your apps are restored, open the app drawer, then ROM Manager. Ensure the current recovery is still 5.0.2.0, then reboot in to clockwork.
19. Take another backup, then select "Install Zip from SD Card" and select the lordmodUEvX.X-CFS.zip file. Once done reboot.
20. Download Battery Calibration. Charge your phone for at least an hour after it reports it's at 100% then open the Calibration app. If it reports the current charge as 4200mV, hit calibrate, then unplug. Do not recharge again until the battery is fully depleted.
That's it!
It looks a lot, but it's not really and shouldn't take more than half an hour. If it doesn't make sense (It might not, I am mega tired), or you get stuck, post and someone will be able to assist/correct me.

Reason: Added Download links
The Following 5 Users Say Thank You to El Presidente For This Useful Post:
On step 14 you've said that titanium backup pro users should restore their apps before signing into google. That's because it's a pain when the phone tries to redownload a hundred apps from the market when you add your gmail account, which is way slower than restoring via titanium backup, even on WiFi.
But this is how I do it. This will work for anyone, even if you don't have TB Pro:
- Once the phone boots for the first time, skip the initial sign in. See this video here on how to do that in a few seconds.
- Hit Menu >> Settings >> Privacy. Tick 'Backup My Data', untick 'Automatic Restore' and then untick 'Backup My Data' again.
- Go to Settings >> Accounts and Sync and add your gmail account.
- Go to the market (which won't be redownloading any apps), install titanium backup and restore all your apps that way.
Also, on step 17, if you hit the search button, tick 'Filter by type' >> 'User' and then hit apply, you will hide any potentially dangerous to restore system apps and don't need to worry.

ROM Manager just told me the CM 7.1 Release Candidate has an update and there's now a CM 7.1 Stable. The Cyanogen forums appear down at the moment though so I can't see the changelog to see what's changed/if it's based on any of the nightlies.
You can go ahead with the above (if you've already downloaded the Release Candidate), or you can hang fire and see what's changed in the stable release and I'll update the links accordingly. I'm also not sure if you need to do the jiggery pokery to get the LorDmod kernel to work properly. Once the forums are backup, I'll download and have a mess around.

Cheers mate, will hang fire until you update the links.
It's not a bad idea no. The release candidate has been out a pretty long time.
It will probably be fine, but if you're not one to flash roms very regularly, then I think it's worth spending the time to ensure there are no problems.

Alternative download links added. Sorry it took a little longer than expected.
CD Plant, it's up to you if you want to wipe or not. As Xyro says, it's definitely a good habbit to get into, but I just downloaded via ROM Manager without wiping (I did wipe the dalvik cache) and everything appears to be fine. Ensure you tick the "Backup Existing ROM" option though, just incase. Also worth taking a full backup in TB and making sure your contacts are synced to your gmail account.
Also, there's no need to mess about with the LM kernels now, you can just download the standard CFS (or BFS if you prefer) variant from his thread, you'll need to flash after you update. One thing I did notice is that I had to reflash his UV scripts after updating to the CM7.1 stable, but that's not a problem.

The alphabetical sorting in recovery/ROM Manager can be a bit weird, maybe that's it. It goes A-Z-a-z, so if your file starts with a lowercase letter it will be really far down the list. Perhaps that's the problem.

The filename is iLividSetupV1, but just a thought, its not a zip file. Will that make a difference? Still cany see it anywhere.

That explains why it's not showing up.
I've no idea what that file is though! Are you sure that's not something else unrelated to rooting?
All you need to do is:
- Download the LordMod kernel.zip from here.
- Place it on your sdcad, don't extract it or anything.
- Do a ROM backup
- Flash the .zip. Do not do a factory reset or a dalvik cache wipe.
(This is about the only flash where wiping the dalvik cache is a bad idea).
EDIT: I've had a look on google. I'm a bit worried that iLividSetupV1 might be some form of malware/addware. I've found a few instances where people report they've got that file rather than their intended download. If you don't know what it is, I'd recommend you delete it and run a virus scan on your PC.
I can't find a concrete answer as to what it is, but better safe than sorry.
