Default "SD Card blank or has unsupported file system"

So I downloaded the latest OTA update last night, and it installed just fine (phone worked fine, etc). I went to bed later last night, then when I woke up this morning, I got a "SD Card blank or has unsupported file system" message!

The first message I got was actually something a bit different. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what it was, but I clicked on the notification and it tried to do something with the SD Card (probably remount it or something), and ever since I've been getting the "SD Card blank or has unsupported file system" thing.

Now my only option given when I click on this notification is to format the SD Card. This is really annoying; I don't want to format my card and lose all the data! Are there any 'fixes' for this? I noticed a lot of people had this problem with the original HTC Desire.

P.S. I haven't rooted my phone or anything like that, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Edit: I tried all the usual stuff such as rebooting, taking the battery out, reseating the mem card, etc, numerous times to no avail. I got so tired of it that I just tried the format option, but it won't even let me format it! It just does nothing after I click it.

I was able to recover from a Damaged SD card msg by taking out the card and plugging it into a computer using an adapter. I copied the files onto my PC, reinserted the card into the phone, reformatted it, plugged it back into the computer and copied the files back on it. It worked great and hopefully you can do likewise to correct your problem. It takes a long time to rewrite the files onto the SD card and to avoid any problems copy the files a few at a time, DO NOT move them. Any problem with the transfer and you'll lose the data on PC and SD card.
How are you reformatting? At first it wouldn't do anything but I was able to do it by going to the SD card option in settings.

Also had this same issue since downloading the latest update. Phone keeps telling me to insert SD card although its in there already. Hopefully I'll be able to copy the files onto my computer using the above method.

Hi!

I have the same problem..

The phone cant find my sd-card after the last update..

Tried everything I know including the stuff mentioned above.
I also tried to stick the card in a usbreader in my computer but the computer cant find it either..

A phone update cant destroy a memorycard can it!?

I also mailed htc about this.. but no answer so far.

I've just done a hard reset as my phone is quite new, so not too many files too lose. It didn't work, phone still doesn't recognise card.

Should I be calling my network or HTC for a replacement SD card?

Default Same here

I got the over the air update on Xmas eve and have been plagued by problems ever since. Fist my text messages muddled senders and said some were from Facebook contacts that hadn't sent them, then it stopped recognising the SD card. SD card not recognised by computer either so I can't rescue my photos. People here seem to have tried reboot and taking card out and in again, battery out and complete factory reset. Has ANYONE got their SD card working again after a factory reset?

Does anyone know if it's the SD card that's now knackered by the update/phone or is it a bugg. Or is the phone now faulty?? What do we do?? I've only had this phone 6 weeks but it's too late for an exchange. I'm really regretting sending my Iphone back and opting for the Desire HD instead now.

My images had a little icon that basicaslly meant they were unable to open. I restarted the ;hone and got the images back. I do agree that texting functions have gone belly up. Mine deleted all my texts a few days ago. All of them.

Hi
How long had you had your phone? Also , just to let everyone know who has the same SD card problem, a new SD card works ok in the phone, so it seems to be just the SD card that either fried by the update or by the phone itself - or a faulty SD card (don't think it's that - too close to the update to be unrelated). Still have text message issues tho.

Hi,

I had the phone since 29 Oct. Hard reset did nothing, same firmware, sd card still fried.

Formatting the sd in another phone didn't work. Left it overnight but it just hung.

Have received a new phone from orange this morning. Refused to replace the sd card as its an 'accessory'. Tried to explain that its integral to the phone but only managed to get a 10 credit to my account.

Phone was originally unbranded but locked to orange. And I had read that this was now the preferred approach on uk carriers.

Unfortunately the replacement phone is branded - orange wednesdays, some crappy games, orange maps etc. Nothing is missing from the unbranded phone but i cant remove some of the bloatware now on it (eg block breaker 'deluxe' which looks like it was ported from a casio calculator).

Not sure if this means i will have to wait for orange to test and release firmware updates. I would initially think that this sucked but not sure now since the OTA debacle/farce.

Gonna go into orange shop today (where i originally bought it) and see if i can get a new 8gb micro sd.

On a VERY positive note, I only phoned orange re this last night and there was someone wth a new phone at my door at 0905 this morning. They might brand them but at least the insurance of 6 quid a month is worth it...

Oh and to confirm, different sd card worked on the old / OTA updated phoned.
I am wondering if the updated fried the sd card but maxing out the storage and overwriting other files to compensate / not brick the phone. If this was the case then the sd partition would go belly up and result it the card not functioning. Can anyone else confirm that there sd might have been near full when OTA updating? If so, sounds like someone dropped the ball at htc and forgot to check the sd card free space prior to commencing to download and install the ota update...jsut a thought.

Last but not least forgot to mention...

The branded firmware is reporting as:

android version 2.2

software version 1.40.61.2 (not anywhere near ...405.3 and must be an orange-only v number)

Default Update

My SD card was nowhere near full, so it couldn't have been that for mine. A new SD card works fine in the phone, without a factory reset. Old SD card (on recovery software) can't be restored but the recovery software can see all my files on the SD but says unable to restore them as SD card corrupted.
My phone unbranded from Carphone Warehouse who say this is down to HTC so my redress should be from them direct. Not sure how to go about getting another SD card from them....any ideas anyone .....number to call???

Got off the phone with a HTC rep a few hours ago. HTC will be sending me a new SD Card tomorrow, and have escalated this problem as well as that of the text messages up to the engineering department.

Try contacting through here first:

HTC - Support - Customer Service - Support via e-Mail

Make sure you inform them that other SD cards work fine with your phone, and that the SD card is unreadable in other readers too. That way they know it's not your phone.

Hi All,

I also have this issue of a dead SD Card after the Dec update. First noticed a few days ago when I wanted to use the camera but thought nothing of it..... since been checking and the card is absolutely dead. It will not read on any PC on a number of different adaptors, plug in a new card and the phone works. I cannot even access the card via some sophisticated data recovery software I own, it is very dead!!!

Having owned many memory cards of different types over the years I have never had one die in this way, always been able to scrape raw data from the card even though the format is corrupt.

Have emailed HTC but it is a worry if it happens again, had it backed up so no real stress but bad updates and screwed OS was my reason for ditching the iPhone.

Same problem as all of you! Really annoyed as i am falling in love with this handset!
Its easy to get another sd card for a few quids, but its not the point.
HTC need to fix this, before it destroys another sd card on the next update!!!

If anyone hears back from HTC with a solution to revive the card or anything sensible!! please post.

ive lost images, videos and even f***ing apps!!

i wonder if next time, you need to keep the SD card in for a system update? does the process rely on the sd card memory?
i am talking in terms of taking a precaution of saving a sd card for the next update we may get!

Hi
I have read somewhere that it's a good idea to keep your sd card out or unmount it via the software for updates, but that it shouldn't be necessary. It's certainly not what we've been advised to do by HTC/phone istructions. From what I've researched since mine fried, this happened about 10 months ago with a Desire or HTC HD software. Defiinitely worried another will go sometime!
HTC have acknowledged there was a problem with this update and are sending me a new SD card and are looking at fixes for the buggy issues with texts/sync/HTC Sense etc.

Hello,

Same problem, logged a ticket with HTC and they escalated the problem and had a call from HTC support service today and was given 2 options
1. They can replace the SD card
2. Requested to mail the phone and corrupted SD card back to HTC.(HTC will arrange pickup). They would check the problem fix, update the software and get e new SD card. This whole process would take 7 working days. They would also try if they could recover the data, which I am not sure!

I have opted for the second option!!. Guys please let me know if this is advisable to mail the phone back to them.

But overall the response from HTC has been quick and positive

Just thought I'd ask as I put in a 32GB card on Xmas day (good ol' Santa!). I'm pretty certain I did the upgrade whilst the standard SD card ws installed a couple of days before Xmas. All seemed fine. Then I swapped them out and loaded shedloads of music on the bigger card etc. No problems to now but thought I'd ask what is likely to happen? Is it likely to mullah the new card or is it just the card that's in the DHD at upgrade time?

Ta

I think that this may of happened to me, and was wondering if i list the problems would you be able to tell me if this is the same problems you had. Firstly i lost all my pictures and stored podcasts, then i was trying to take a picture today and i got an error message saying: Unable to save file to SD, due to insufficient file permissions. Would this be the same thing you guys are talking about?

I have only had my phone for about six weeks so i cant return it. Did changing the SD card work?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Hi - to Skulltalker - The error message sounds a little different to what I think most of us have experienced. If a new SD card works, then it would appear it is the same problem as a new sd card worked for most of us regarding the memory issues. Problems with texts and notifications haven't been sorted yet, nor the problems with HTC sync and sense, I don't think.

My desire hd was updated, but it was a few days layer my phone told me to insert my SD card even though it was inserted. I just tried it in another phone and it didn't work but the SD from that phone worked fine in mine. I believe it got fried . This is a replacement phone which I have had less than a month. The first one kept shutting off after a few minutes. I hope the SD card is not going to be a constant issue.

Do you know, I had a sneaking suspicion that my sd card didn't fail until a couple of days after the update. I just thought it was the fact that I hadn't tried to take a photo until that point, but now you've said that, I think mine may have been the same. Question is, did the actual process of the update fry it (ie if we remove them in future updates, will they be ok) OR is/was there someting on the update that fries them and if we have another one in now, will that go the same way??

I've had a 4GB one in there since the day I posted this and it's been working fine so far. Waiting on HTC's 8GB replacement.

I thought I'd share my experience with this issue:

I'm relatively new to all this (got my HD in October) and have had issues every two or three weeks since, including text messages getting deleted a few weeks ago, and this week's issue is the SD card one. Mine said it was "blank or unsupported filesystem" this morning, my laptop wouldn't read it, and my dad's Nokia N8 wouldn't read it (though both recognised it). I've tried restoring the files with PhotoRec (recommended on another forum for this issue) and nothing came of that, so I stuck it back in my phone for the 'n'th time only to find that this time, it doesn't have the "blank" error message (or any error message for that matter) - it just won't read it and says it is unmounted despite it being firmly clicked into place.

I've emailed HTC via their website so am awaiting their reply and hopefully an offer of a new card. I'm loathed to do a factory reset, because when I got the darned phone I did three of these just to get the WiFi, HTC Sense and my email syncing working properly. I don't particularly want to lose all my data again!

So anyway, thanks for the thread and keep the updates coming, it makes interesting reading.

I had a 4gig SD card in my Captivate for months- no problem. I purchased 2 16gig cards, neither of those work 100% of the time. Each card will be ok for a few hours, then give the '...unsupported file system'. That is my 2cents.

My second SD card has been destroyed by the phone; the original one that came with the phone (8gb) and a replacement one that I had (16gb). I purchased my DHD from Clove and have it with me since 25th of Oct; I had no problems until recently (I am guessing till the last OTA update)...

HTC needs to roll out another update to negate the effects of the 1.72.405.3 update...

Hello,

Just to give an update, I had shipped my phone back to HTC support last week, and I received the email confirmation from them today saying that the phone has been repaired and is UPSed today.

Strange point, I sent a phone with an IMEI/Serial No, and I am being sent a phone with a different IMEI/Serial no. I called up HTC to check why this is and what was said was, the have replaced the major parts of the phone and this is as good as new phone. He said it is a New Phone in the old casing!!.

I am waiting to for the phone to arrive and will update on the same

does anyone know why a Galaxy S phone would recognize an SD card one minute then not recognize it the next?

Strange point, I sent a phone with an IMEI/Serial No, and I am being sent a phone with a different IMEI/Serial no. I called up HTC to check why this is and what was said was, the have replaced the major parts of the phone and this is as good as new phone. He said it is a New Phone in the old casing!!.

I am waiting to for the phone to arrive and will update on the same

Will be interesting to see which update/software release the phone has on it - will you let us all know please?

I have just been told to send mine back but I don't have a spare and I need it, so I'm reluctant to do this unless I absolutely have to. My thinking is that they may have just put non-updated stock innards into your phone. If that's the case, I'm not sure whether to give downgrading to the last update a go.....

Oh, and I actually received (after chasing about 6 times - Samsung 8gb) my replacement SD card this morning - it was only posted yesterday when they emailed me on 6th saying it had been posted then.

Yeah, I called them a week ago to see what the delay was, and they said that their stock of SD cards was low but that I was at the top of the list.

Actually, I realised that the SD card that I received was from Carphone Warehouse and not HTC. So HTC still haven't sent me one when they said they have. At least I have one now though. I am worried however, because HTC seem to be coming out with a load of inconsistent lines and promises are not kept. Their communication about this update is appalling!

Just got an email saying they are out of stock of 8GB cards, but will be getting a shipment on the 26th Jan.

I bet they are!!

I wonder whether they will provide an update to sort out all these issues....it's not looking likely as so many people are being asked to send their phones back for repair (me included) and it's not a hardware fault. Bizarre. They could fix the issues with a decent software release. Or reissue 1.32 to over ride 1.72.

OK, I have received the Phone after a week at HTC, with a new Sandisk 8GB SD Card.

Here is the software information in the new phone

Android Version : 2.2 (Earlier it was 2.2.1?? after the OTA update)
Baseband Version : 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.21-fg3f553dhtc-kernel@and18-2 #1 Thu Oct 28 13:24:11 CST 2010
Build Number : 1.32.405.6 CL278359 release-keys
Software Number : 1.32.405.6
Browser Version : Webkit 3.1

It has a new IMEI and Serial No. too

I am not sure if this is the old version of the software, when I check for software updates it says there is no update available. Have they removed the latest update?.

Problem description as per their ticket is : Storage parts malfunction(Memory Card, Micro drive, Nand Flash...)

They insist that this is the same phone which I had sent to them with some new hardware, but for me the phone looks new, since I had the ZAGG protective shields which is now not on the phone. Would they have removed it?

I had a tough time talking to the customer care at HTC asking if it is a new phone or not.

They took out the core of the phone and put in a new one, hence the new IMEI. However, the rest of the phone is still the one you sent in (according to them anyway). I don't understand the bit you said about the ZAGG: "I had the ZAGG protective shields which is now on the phone"

Did you meant "not" on the phone?

The 2.2.1 update was rolled back, so it's no longer available for now.

Yes it was typo, I meant it was not on the phone.

Thanks for that. Really helpful. How's your battery life with no update (that's the only thing that was good about the update for me)?

So it looks like essentially what they did was remove the last update. Why don't they sort out some software to do that for everyone and then start again. At the moment, they are in the situation of having probably 20% of the population with Desire HD with malfunctioning phones with the 1.72 update, another 50% who have it but are ok and another 30% who don't have it at all. How is that going to work when they release a new update? Does anyone with any techie knowledge know whther a software release usually builds on a previous version or removes it completely before installing the update??

Oh, and just checked on XDA developers - someone with a brand new phone has exactly the same build and software details as you. So it's a complete roll back.

Hmmm. I'm thinking I'll put the original SD card back into the phone so that it doesn't fry my 32GB card. Then wait for the next update before it goes back again.

I would just take it back to the shop and ask for a new one (and make sure it's only got 1.32 software version in!)

This problem manifested itself with my DHD today. I'm so angry. I love my DHD, but there's been nothing but problems with it - SMS alerts, lost messages, non-functional GPS, wonky compass - since the last update. Is there any way of rolling back to the previous one? I'd happily trade in the improved battery life for having the functionality restored. Irate email to HTC customer services today, I think.

My original SD card died last night on my 3 month old DHD - it was working one minute, and then it was `unavailable' the next. Tried it in the PC card reader and nothing! I did the update a few weeks ago, and until now had not seen any of the problems others have talked about.
Phoned HTC Support this morning (in eastern europe apparently), and very quickly the guy was taking my address to post me a new one. I asked was there a possibilty of it happening to the new one, but apparently there will be some instructions with it to avoid that.

Default My phone has now destroyed 3 microsd cards!

My phone has now destroyed 3 microsd cards! The original one that came with the phone lasted a few weeks and went just after the December upgrade I told my phone supplier and they said they'd send me a replacement under warrantee (I'm still waiting 2 months later!!!). Card 1 would not even recognise as a valid device by windows in my card reader. I bought a new 32gb mem card and within days it was dead two, windows could see it but any attempt to write to it resulted in errors. I was now convinced that it was the latest update that had destroyed my card so bought the cheapest 2gb card I could find at the supermarket and downgraded my phone. All was well for a few weeks but now this card too has become read only. Non of the cards could be formatted by Windows.

Summary

  • Jan 8gb killed by 1.72.405.3 Android can't read, Windows wont recognise device. Card lasted about 4 weeks.
  • Feb 32gb killed by 1.72.405.3 Android can't read only, windows can read but not write. Card lasted about 4 days.
  • Feb 2gb killed by 1.32.405.6 Android can't read only, windows can read but not write. Card lasted about 3 weeks.
So I think it's my phone that has a fault, I'm guessing that this can't be all Desire HD's or more people would be having problems than appear to be so I'll be trying to get a replacement, I need to contact my phone supplier again anyway to find out what they are doing! It's a great phone but...
