Question Desire HD screen cracked / unresponsive, need to get contacts off phone

Hello all

Need some advice on extracting the contacts from my HTC Desire HD phone. The screen is cracked and is unresponsive to touch, however I can still see the display.

The phone was protected with a password, and defaults to 'charge only' when plugged in via USB.

I've logged into my google account in the hope my contacts would be backed up there, but no joy.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

When you got your Desire HD did you copy the contacts from the sim card to the phone? If so you could get a sim card reader and extract your contacts from it. Otherwise I'm not sure how you get by the password without it.

Apparently if it's branded or through a mobile carrier you can take it to them and they can get the contacts off your phone for a small fee.

Hi Brutal, as I recall, I ran out of space on the sim card, so began saving contacts to the phone.

If there are no other options then I might have to contact my provider but I was hoping to be able to extract the data myself somehow. At least you've given me an option, thanks..

Apparently there might be a way you can do it (but its a very slight chance it would) but the main thing to ask before we go any further first is do you know if you have USB debugging enabled? It would've been found in settings>applications>development>USB debugging. If you don't know for sure then my last post maybe the only answer.

No I can't say with any certainty if USB debugging was enabled, I don't think I would of enabled this myself.

Thanks for the insight Brutal..

Have a look at this post. It's basically what I was going to suggest to you but I forgot to mention your phone needs to be rooted for this to work. If your phone is rooted then you could give it a go whether you know if USB debugging is enabled or not. If it isn't the program wont work and you wont be able to retrieve your contacts. I know this is in the Desire Z forum but the folder location is still the same. Let us know how you get on.

can I get my contacts off my phone?

If USB debugging is enabled then you can connect to PC via charge mode and install my phone explorer onto PC from here:
FJ Software Development

With this you can connect to phone and sync contacts and other content like messages as well as back up the phone. In addition you can remotely control it and select people and then export the contacts to the memory card.

This only works if usb debugging has been enabled.

If not and you are in the UK then the phone will get sent to regenersis for repair if under warranty. The normal procedure is to reflash the phone but if you contact them directly they may well not flash is and just replace the screen. If you contact HTC they will always tell you it will all get wiped so you must only arrange this with the service company directly.

The other option is to take it to a private repair company to replace the screen, this would void any warranty but at least you would not lose the contacts.

I had the same issue a year ago and got it done under warranty without them reflashing but the screen was not damaged it was only the touch that had failed and I had forgotten to re enable usb debugging.
