Is there anyway at all on any rom that has this feature on the Desire S? My current phone, HTC Hero can do it on a CM7 based rom and I want to make sure my next phone which is probably desire s can do it. It's important to me, thanks.

There are a few apps on Android Market that do just that, so you should be able to do it irrespective of what ROM you plump for.

If you can't find any there, let me know and I'll ask my friend which one she uses.

Edit: It's Rocking Shortcuts. There's a trial version, too.

See above. There are others, but I've been told Rocking Shortcuts is the best.

If I understand you correctly my S does it as standard on Cyanogen, which is soon to be an official release.

Pro Amp also does it regardless of rom.
