Glad you still have your levels! FWIW I haven't used HTC Sense sync in months and it still happened to me - so I'm not sure it's to blame.
Do you still have HTC Sense installed or did you just stop it sync-ing up? If you've uninstalled it then that absolves it from being to blame, but I'm still not in a rush to reinstall it.

I "removed account" in Settings -> Accounts & sync -> HTC Sense - so effectively uninstalled HTC Sense sync, which is (I think) what people were suspecting may be the problem earlier in this thread. If you're talking about "HTC Sense" the GUI for the entire phone, no I haven't touched that at all.

Ah, I meant just the 'removed account' thing, yep. I guess that's not it.
Got my HTC Desire HD last week. Set up an account on HTCSence yesterday and this morning found all my messages gone. Don’t know ig there is a connection.
Using the tel no previously noted on this forum (0845 8900 079), I rang HTC. They said it’s a known software glitch and I should return my phone to ‘3’ under the 28 day return policy for a replacement. HTC logged my issue, took my IMEI number and gave me their reference number to quote.
I fear I’ll be given the go-around by ‘3’ but I’ll give it a shot.
Well, ‘3’ initially wouldn’t accept that there was a problem, even though I referred to my conversation with HTC and gave ‘3’ my HTC incident reference number. ‘3’ said they have no records of this happening before and asked for me to do a software reset (so something similar) and talked me through on how to do this.
I cancelled my HTCSense account on-line so no risk of any sync issues. Did my reset and set about setting up my phone again for email on our server, etc.
Today I went to check a text and a pop-up message appeared, too briefly for me to note all the details, but stated something like ‘message application had to close’ and then no more texts again. Rebooted my phone, took battery & SIM card out too, but no more texts on my phone.
Rang ‘3’ who again said they have no record of this issue from any of their customers. I begged to differ and referred her to this forum. They said that their ‘3’ myphone web site has no records of this fault, so I asked the helpdesk lady to show me where their forum is. She directed me to a ‘3’ Myspace web area where they have some 20 preset problems with no option for an end user to add their specific problem. So if their website won’t allow users to raise this problem then it’s not surprising they know nothing about it.
Good news is that she agreed that I should have a replacement but recommended that I don’t get another HTC Desire HD in case it happens again.
Now I’ve just got to choose a suitable alternative.

Chris, I think you are right. It may not be anything to do with HTCSense as I cancelled my account from my PC before resetting my DHD.
Well, I went to use my HTC Desire Z today and... all the texts have gone again
I didn't have HTC Sense on it, so it's not that.
I bought it through dialaphone but since people have had trouble getting any common sense out of HTC themselves then clearly there's no point doing that.
I last backed up with MyBackupPro a couple of days ago, and have also had SMS Backup running, but while it says it last did a backup at 8pm last night, I go to restore and... "The application SMS Backup+ (process.com.zegoggles.smssync) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again".
It's done that three times, the latest one after switching the phone off and on again just in case that helped.
Is there anything that works automatically, or shall I just have to use MyBackupPro daily and hope it doesn't delete them before I do it?

Backup to gmail costs about £2 ($3?) and is WELL worth the money in my opinion! Backup is automatic, and restore is one touch of a button and that does work.
However, I maintain my guess that the problem appears to be related to a buffer issue, and if I'm right then (as happened to me) when you hit Restore, you only need to receive a couple more messages and then everything is lost again. So restoring everything after everything is wiped may not be the best idea, as it could just make the same thing happen again a lot sooner. Backup to gmail is an excellent way of preserving messages, though, and search in gmail is second to none, so all in all very handy and highly recommended

Thanks for the tip. I might well give that a go. I've just tried another restore from SMS Backup+ and it claimed to retrive 2 or 3 messages, then... "Force Close/Report". Total rubbish
To add insult to injury, I tried to restore my last backup made using MyBackupPro on Tuesday, and got the error msg:
"restore sms failed: no such table: contacts 1: , while compiling: SELECT * FROM contacts1 WHERE thread_id = 1 ."
Er... huh?
A google showed it might be something to do with SMS Backup+ so I "cleared data" from that, then switched off, removed battery, switched back on, and then I could restore the texts (god knows why it happened). Now I've uninstalled SMS Backup+ and am going to try "Backup to Gmail" which is £1.50 at the moment.
This happened to my friend this morning and she did a factory reset right away.
She had HTC Sense on her phone before, and the messages were stored on Sense, and after restoration, she added her HTC sense account back on the phone, and within an hour her texts started to reappeared on her phone.
Not all the texts are back yet, but they're returning alright.
Had the same thing happen to me. I did a factory restore and a couple of hours later they reappeared. This morning however all but 4 of my emails disappeared! Strange how it left 4 but deleted the rest..!
I'm a newbie to the site although I've been an android user for a couple of years now.
I have a HTC Desire HD and I'm with T-Mobile and have been for just over 5 months.
Well I must say I absolutely love the phone and it's ease of use for the most part.
I use it for a lot of my business needs so reliability is of the utmost importance to me.
BUT and it is a big BUT I'm absolutely sick and tired of hearing a new message come through, opening my phone to find that it isn't there and also the rest of my messages have gone.
The first time I lost close to 6000 messages I then installed SMS Backup & Restore and tried to restore the texts when I remembered The next time I lost around 1500 messages and the two times after that a few hundred.
I had a play around with the app and decided to schedule a back up for 0500 every morning.
Anyway this morning the same thing has happened again, also after this happened I heard the notification tone for three new messages which didn't come though. I knew one to be from my wife due to the individual message tone, she confirmed that she had sent a message.
At first I couldn't restore from SMS Backup & Restore despite trying several times I got an error message.
I mounted the phone as a harddrive and found the folder to establish the back up file was there, it was and contained messages.
I came on here to see if I could find the location of where the texts are saved by the phone as I wanted to try and copy the back up file over manually.
I started reading this thread and tried the suggestions above which didn't work for me.
I restarted my phone again and tried the restore again, it worked this time so I didn't lose the 2000 messages I thought I might.
Frustratingly the restored messages only go back to the afternoon of the 18th April even though the last back up was run at 0500 this morning, I don't understand this but guess this is a problem with the app not the phone.
This problem has obviously been raging on for around a year now and obviously needs attention from HTC and the carriers.
This product is not fit for purpose if it cannot be relied upon to perform the most basic of tasks i.e. not indescriminately deleting all our data without prompting.
As such I wonder if we should be refunded for the cost of these faulty units or as a minimum offered a suitable replacement?
Is this issue only being reported on the HTC handsets?
Anyway rant over, I'll be contacting T-Mobile and HTC next.
Please keep the updates coming on this thread, it will be very usefull to keep up with everybody elses findings.
I have now contacted HTC who said the problem has only just come to light, which reading this and other forums is obviously rubbish.
He said they are working on a fix but couldn't give any indication as to how long this would take.
He said I could send my phone in for repair, this is not an option for me as I use my phone for business and couldn't be without it for 1/2 day never mind a week +.
Interestingly he said it is only a very small number of handsets that seem to be affected.
I rang T-Mobile technical support and spoke to a girl called Carly who I have to say was one of the most helpful call centre workers I have ever spoken to.
She was very helpful and has arranged for a replacement phone to be sent out tomorrow.
She also backed up the HTC workers claims as she said that I was the first call she had ever had about this issue, she was however familiar with the problem as it happened to her for the first and only time recently on her Desire HD.
Fingers crossed the new phone doesn't have the same issues, I will be backing up from day one though!
This is the message I have received from HTC regarding the problem, I asked that they send me an email confirming our conversation for my records:-
Thank you for your telephone call earlier today, I can confirm that we are aware of this issue on certain handsets, where text messages are being deleted and are currently working on a fix. I am, at this time, unable to comment on the time scale of when the fix will be made available.
We can book in your handset for a repair at our center to better diagnose the problem, however we are unable to provide you with a temporary phone while your's is being repaired.
The only solutions we have at the present time would be to factory reset your phone, or use an app available from the marketplace to back up your text messages.
I trust this has resolved your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Mother ****er! This bitch ass phone has just deleted all my text messages!! Jesus christ the end of the contact can't come soon enough and I can get rid of this piece of chicken shite phone! Can't begin to tell you how pissed off I am with this f'ing phone!!
I found this thread after getting thoroughly fed up with my phone! This is the second time for me it's deleted all of my text messages without permission! The first time I thought it must have been something I did but this time I am not so sure. I have nothing that implies automatic deletion turned on, no one had access to my phone and they were there earlier today.
I did have an HTC sense account but I see no option to even backup/view text messages on the website for me or in the account settings on my phone so I wasn't hopeful deleting, adding it again etc would work (which it didn't.) Neither did taking out the battery or any other tricks I saw.
I did have over 1000+ texts I would imagine, one conversation alone might have been reaching that but my Desire Z showed no signs of slowing, being at a memory limit etc so not sure it was that either but like I said I don't have automatic deletion on anyway.
I've emailed HTC with my problem but has anyone who has had a new phone been rid of the fault or are all android opperated phones destined to do this from now on? I really don't want to live with this for my two year contract...
I've just had this problem happen again, and at the same time the home screen has gone a bit screwy with some of the graphics slightly to the right, so the time (normally top-left) is shifted a bit to the right of its area, so looks odd. Similar, the 'fog' graphic that's in the weather box is off to the right, and the onscreen buttons at the bottom for the apps, phone and personalise, are all a bit off. Anyone else had that?
I tried switching it off and on and no joy. I'm going to try taking the battery out too. I've trying restoring my SMS with Mybackuppro and it's frozen on 'removing SMS'.
A reboot and the graphics are back to normal. And the SMS have returned in full. I know the Mybackuppro restore didn't complete itself behind the scenes because I last backed up on Sat evening and I also had a few yesterday.
This phone (or the software on it, at least) is still completely p'ing me off, though.
I too discovered all of my texts have suddenly been erased today. Everything was fine this morning and then went to refer to a text this afternoon and there all gone.
I've restarted the hadnset and nothing.
HTC Desire HD
Android 2.2
Software NUmber - 1.32.405.6
Unbranded
Is there a solution to prevent this from happening again and to retrieve the erased messages?
What the....?! My Desire HD was just lying on my desk, I haven't touched it for at least 30 minutes. Suddenly it vibrates - like it does when receiving a text message. I turned the screen on, tried to open the list of text messages (just by opening the built-in messaging application) - EMPTY! Tried restarting the phone, still empty . What the ... is going on here?!
I did notice that the messaging application crashed earlier today (the "force close" button appeared), but I didn't pay too much attention to that.
Just had a text come through. Clicked on 'reply', got an error message saying Messaging had crashed (I've got about 3200 msgs) and then they were all deleted. Luckily, I'd backedup last night. However, I went to do a restore but it failed, like in my last post.
I did the reboot by taking the battery out, but unlike last time, my texts didn't miraculously reappear and I'm restoring them now.
Has anyone been onto HTC recently about this issue?

Did the Backup to Gmail app fail for you? It has always worked for me, so sorry to hear that
I've sent HTC a few messages, and think the more of us that do the more likely it is to be fixed. There's a link in one of my messages somewhere up there *points up* hope this helps.

Yep, I tried to restore it a couple of times and no joy. Didn't think of trying it today but it's still running in the background. Will try and remember next time.
My SMS app just crashed again about 30 mins ago, with no other texts coming in, and they've all gone again! That's twice in 24hrs!
I did try to use the SMS Backup to Gmail again, for restoring, but this time tried taking out the battery first, since when I've used MybackupPro, I've always had to do that to make it work. And now SBtG is working!
It's managed to backup over 9000 texts so I'm letting it get on with it to see what I get. I'll post back if I get any problems. Really p'ing me off, though that this has happened TWICE in two days!
I have had the same problem just happen to me for the third time now. Its extremely annoying. I have spoke with HTC they acknowledge the problem, but do not have an update yet for this basic problem. I suggest everyone on this thread and forums complains to the bbc program Watchdog. I have just sent them my complaint, if enough of us send in complaints, this subject will get some media attention, which in turn might make HTC come out with an update to resolve this basic issue.
As no one in the media, has caught up on this HTC, thinks they can treat their customers as badly as they want.
If we all complain, Watchdog will highlight this problem
I've had a reply from HTC's Twitter account today, @HTC, and have directed them to this thread, so here's hoping we can get a resolution for this. Inbetween my contacting them and their reply, the texts disappeared again
Hi,
This happened to me two days ago. After reading through the whole thread, one of the replies (on the previous page) clicked with me.
Just before this happened I got a message on my phone saying 'Running out of Memory on Phone'. I of course was busy and ignored it.
But it seems this was the issue and the phone has automatically deleted what it thinks was non-essential stuff to create enough memory for it to run. Either that or the lack of memory crashed something irreversibly.
The HTC Sense trick works (only if you previously used HTC Sense) because it restores the backup of your messages (somewhat slowly) from their online backup centre.
Same if you restore a backup created by a backup app.
However - you will continue to have this happen again almost straight away if you do that as you'll fill your memory up again.
SOLUTION:
1-Move every app to SD that you can
2-Delete all those apps you don't use any more
3-Spring clean your messages and/or
4-Setup the Gmail sync as suggested above and then DO set up some auto delete options to remove old messages (as they will now be backed up). Or use an app to delete old messages occasionally.

Since I deleted HTC Sense for the second time, though, the problem has still happened (as someone else previously stated) so it's not that. Also, I've never had the 'Running out of memory on phone' message.
I've not heard back from @HTC's Twitter people after I pointed them to this thread, however.
The Gmail SMS thing never worked for me because it backed up over 9000 over time and when I tried a restore, it got to around 2,600 and ground to a halt. Tried it 2 or 3 times.
It could be that your memory is still so full it can't restore everything. Either way, might be worth deleting some apps/messages or moving apps to sd and trying again. If you have app brain installed its easy to move apps to sd - just look at your list of apps and click on everything that says 'on phone'.
I'm not 100% sure that memory is the issue, or that other times I would even receive the warning first, but I don't think its a coincidence that the first time I got that message was followed by this issue!
If it is lack of memory it means this is not a HTC issue. It is a bug with Android in that rather than bringing up some screen stopping the phone functioning until you choose which messages to delete - it decides for you, by clearing everything.....
Both times the cause seems to have been the receipt of a junk text. No idea why that would be a factor, but I never receive anything other than personal texts and the two times I have had a spam one all my other txts have spontaneously disappeared.
This problem has just happened to me for about the 5th time, it is beginning to get extremely fustrating and most defo has nothing to do with any memory or text limits.
I sometimes aren't even at my phone and I come back to find them all deleted..i later get a text that is blank and in the received from box simply shows a funny smiley, containing a @ symbol.
The past couple of times have been worse as they vanish and I am then not able to send a text...its been like this for 6hours now...i need to be able to send a text with the darn thing!! Has anyone had this problem for it and have any idea on what to do with it?? Im going away in a day and dont know what to do with it!

Haven't had this on my Desire Z... doesn't restarting fix it?

Mine is a Desire Z too, i tried restarting it and taking the battery out and nothing worked. This morning it is back up and working though..only took it 13 hours lol.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just checked the phone and it says 630Mb available space and that's on the phone itself. That should be plenty, shouldn't it?
On the card is 4.75Gb out of 7.39Gb total, in case you need that.
Same just happened to me. I opened up messages app, and all messages except the last two were gone. Apparently no solution from HTC exists, no guarantee that it will not happen in the future, and if you call them they feed you bullshit. I have HTC Desire, android 2.2. I guess I am buying Ericson or Samsung the next time. This is just the sort of things that just is not supposed to happen with a mobile phone.
Just registered on here to vent about the same thing happening to me this morning. So very irritating, I've only had the phone ten days! I contacted HTC support and they replied with the following:
"Thank you for contacting HTC.
It sounds like you might have got a software bug on your device that has caused your text messages to get deleted.
Unfortunately we have no way of restoring your texts. Although sometimes we have experienced that some of the texts come back the next day. But this is unfortunately not always the case.
I would recommend that you for future reference download a sms backup application from the android market. This will make sure that you always have text messages backed up.
Now I first recommend that you perform a soft reset on your device. Hopefully this will prevent the same thing from happening again. Please do the following:
Whilst your device is still turned ON, remove the back cover and take out the battery. Do NOT turn the device OFF before you remove the battery. Leave the battery for 4-5 minutes before you insert it again.
Then you can try to start your phone as normal.
The problem should not happen again.
Another option you can try is to actually perform a hard reset on your device. This will remove all potential software bugs that might have occured on your device.
Please let me know if you would like the correct instructions to perform a hard reset.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11GBCW31ENA000879.
Sincerely,
Hanne

It really isn't good enough for HTC to say "download an app" if it's to correct a fault in their product.
I'm wondering if this is enough of a fault that I can return the handset. It's a non-contract Desire Z. I would say this message loss was a fault, although whether the company I bought the phone off would say that is another matter.
This has just happened for me too.... last time I deleted my own texts accidentally (oops!) but this morning all my texts were gone, but last night my phone was really low on battery so turned it off before bed. Turned it on this morning and more or less immediately it turned itself off again due to low battery. Plugged phone in and left it to charge, turned it on an hour or so later and all my texts were gone!
I had no idea it was such a big issue, nevertheless I've now installed SMSBackup+ just in case it happens again and set it to backup daily.
If this is such a big issue why aren't HTC communicating this to users - if people are aware this could happen, they may have taken preventative measures (such as installing backup apps) beforehand and not be in a position whereby their messages are missing!
HTC finally replied when I tweeted them again, the other day, pointing to their Facebook page showing that it 2.3 would be available soon, but there's still no news on whether that'll fix the texts problem, and now the info is out, it's a case of installing a new ROM rather than doing a general update, and doing a factory reset! What the hell?!
Edit: Now I'm confused, as I've just done a check for updates on my phone and it's telling me that it CAN download 2.3 straight to my phone, without deleting any data, so why is this Engadget post stating the opposite?
Haven't tried the update yet, though.
Last edited by DVDfever; August 1st, 2011 at 07:53 AM.
I was mistaken that the problem is actually on HTC Desire and not the 'Z'. The 2.3 update is now available for the Z and downloadable on it. Has anyone tried it yet?
This just happened to me - normal HTC Desire on Android 2.2.1 (no 2.3 update available).
The Desire doesn't support the HTC Sense web-sync either, so there's no way of auto-backing up. It also means it isn't a problem with that app.
I've read in other places that this happens when an individual contact hits 1,000+ SMS messages. I was about that for one contact, so I can believe this might be an influencing factor.
I've never seen anywhere to get your messages back, but one possible prevention is stop any single contact from crossing the 1,000 text limit.
I lost all my text messages twice since I bought my HTC Desire last March!!!! It happened to me again today! It is so annoying and frustrating. I have the 'delete old msgs' unchecked too! All text msgs were deleted and a few hours later i got 4 very old msgs again and that's it... Please I need help. I intend to sell my HTC if this occurs another time!
The same thing has just happened to me so they obviously haven't fixed whatever bug is causing it.
I use GO SMS and when I received a message this afternoon I opened my text messages to find that I only had two in there! A few hours ago I had thousands! Luckily I have back-up pro, but I haven't updated for a while so I've still lost quite a lot. Really annoying......
Well that's really not going to help things. You should look at setting thread limits in messaging apps. You could use sms backup+ to back your sms as sent / received to.a gmail label. Benefit is you can read and search your sms on any comp with internet access too
