Since upgrading to 2.2 the messaging app is randomly jumping to the top of the conversation when I'm writing a text. I can't work out if there's any pattern, it's not a particular keypress or message length. The only work around is to either scroll down again (inpractical in an 800 message conversation) or press back to save as a draft and then edit the draft.
The annoying thing is that the bug where the conversation jumped to the bottom after deleting or locking a text has been fixed.
I have this problem too, at first I thought it was me just touching another part causing multi-touch issues. :P
I would like to know if there is any fix too, because that is my only niggle with the stock messaging app, tbh.
I have the same issue. I think I've narrowed it down to an area around the backspace key, but can never reproduce reliably.
After the obvious layout change in sms app, this jumping to the top of the thread thing is the first difference I noticed immediately after 2.2 upgrade :-(

Reason: Clarify wording
Yeah, seeing this too. It's made me switch to Handcent. I still prefer the UI of the stock app, it's just too irritating to have to scroll back down an entire message thread at arbitrary intervals.
This is happening to me also, but it happens that rarely that it's not made the jump to Handcent worthwhile.
I've noticed it tends to be on threads that are longer than 50 messages long, and it always jumps when your writing 'word wraps' to the next line in a text longer than 160 characters. Also, it makes no difference if there are picture messages in the thread or not.
Glad to hear others are having this problem with the Sense messaging app too. It can be really frustrating, though it doesn't happen that often, thankfully.
I've also noticed it seems to happen only when an SMS passes the first 160 character 'page' limit.
EDIT: Just a thought, is everyone else using SMS popup?

I'm having this problem also - is kind of annoying when I'm typing on a long conversation. Been ok the past week, but it has "jumped" randomly in the past. The conversation I have most problems with is about 70 messages long, wish I could archive them as whilst I need them, I don't need immediate access to them. Folders like Gmail would be ideal!!!
Having similar problem to this, but not while typing.
Under 2.1 when I got a text I'd open the notification bar at the top, simply click on the text and it'd take me to it.
Under 2.2 when I get a text I do the same, open the notification bar, click on the text, except it doesn't go to messaging. The notification window stays open, now blank, so I drag it back up to close it and it's left me at the beginning of the conversation, not at the new message. Scrolling through hundreds of messages is ******ed, so the only way to get to the new text is to go out and open Messages again to get to it.
I am getting seriously frustrated with this bug, glitch, error, problem or whatever it should be called. I am having this very same issue in my long message threads/feeds when my composing message reaches 160 characters or more, but it isn't every single time, just a lot of the instances of my message reaching 2 messages in length.
Such an annoying bug which I hope is resolved by HTC in the HTC Sense update to my desire (classic), slated at being in December for the latest HTC Sense interface to the desire....fingers crossed.
I'm having the same problem. But also, is anyone having the problem where the wrong message is selected from the messages home screen?
Alot of times, I select a message and the message at the bottom of the screen is the one that opens. It's caused me to reply to the wrong people on more than one occasion. Is anyone else having this problem?
I'm having the exact same problem. Randomly jumping to the top of the text message screen somewhere around pressing backspace. I have found a workaround for this problem:
This works on the HTC Desire: when it jumps to the top of your message (very annoying when there are hundreds of messages to scroll through) press the keyboard button (bottom left) to turn off the keywboard. Then hold down the menu button. The keyboard will come back and it will scroll back to the bottom of the messages.
Also, jakiu, I'm having that problem too. The other day I selected a message and it took me to a different message. I had to go back and forth about 5 times until it finally displayed the message I was selecting.
I find I sometimes have to wait a few seconds on the message screen before I select a conversation to view. If I'm in a rush it seems to display a random message and not the one I selected.

A quicker workaround I discovered is to rotate the phone from portrait to landscape, which brings up the message you're composing occupying the whole screen, then rotating back to portrait you will be back at the bottom of the messages with your new message in focus again.
If you're using the Compact QWERTY keyboard layout, rotating the phone to landscape will bring up the QWERTY keyboard; Helpful for fiddly words, new words and passwords.

This issue has been bugging me as well for ages but it turns out it's not so random or a bug. It's in fact a short-cut they didn't want to tell us about.
The short-cut occurs, as we know, when composing a message. By scrolling across right with the scroll-ball thing it high lights the send button, then by pressing the 'back' button (not backspace), it jumps to the top of the messages.
Other than the ways already suggested to get round this I've also found that the search button jumps you back down to the bottom.
Probably not the fist to discover it but couldn't find a reason why it was doing it.

It is very frustrating but rotating the screen does seem to sort it.

Scrolling right with the ball during compose produces an exact replica of the behaviour I'm seeing.
(The 'back' and 'search' buttons have no effect either to cause or resolve the problem for me.)
I'm not hitting the scroll ball in practice, I'm nowhere near, so there must be a bug that activates the scroll right shortcut as the message surpasses the SMS character limit and thus extends into a further message. It also activates sometimes when I receive a message during composing (perhaps only when the incoming message hits the same thread - not sure?)
I've noticed that exiting to Inbox only preserves the last saved draft, i.e. from the last time you reached the 160-character SMS, so if you write something, then decide to edit it further, and then back out, it doesn't save your subsequent changes. So that's not an advisable workaround at all. I do however suspect this is the cause for the bug, i.e. it automatically saves a draft of your draft each 160-char and by doing so it triggers the scroll-right bug, and also causes the bug whereby it only saves the draft of your draft to the Drafts folder.
Mine has just started doing this too. Obviously with the amount of other people experiencing this, it's more than just a bug.
I'll try the rotate fix the next time.
i tend to restrain myself from throwing it against the wall. When I have noticed the same thing happening, is like all the time. I'd really like to just throw it against the wall. It happens while writing a text and someone else sends a text while you are still writing. If I stop typing, then it does not jump to first message. I notice a text being sent because typing is very slow and then vibrates. When that happens I just stop typing and it will return to not jumping. If there is quite the conversation happening back and forth is when it will really be a nuisance.

Reason: cut off at end.
I have noticed this problem too, really very annoying. I have a HTC Cha Cha, when it happens... Which I can't quite pin down but scrolling within the current text seems to definitely cause it to happen, I'm sure it's happened for short texts too though. One it's happened, the delete button is totally f@£$%^ and causes it to happen almost every time I press it, the 'almost' is very perplexing. To get back to the bottom, I have to bring up message options (on the cha cha you just press on a conversation box) cancel the options list and press 'b'. Sometimes just pressing 'b' works, but rarely. The wall is looking increasingly likely for this little guy.
