Question A few data Q's

I'd like to mention I've done my research before I decided to post this thread.

So I'm brand new to android phones and I got a HTC Desire and my data plan has only 100mb's on it.

I got 3g watchdog so I can keep an eye on my usage but I've noticed it'll randomly get higher without me using any internet. I've read that this is because of background sync.

I've tried turning off the syncing on the power control widget but I've noticed that its still using a small amount of data. Would turning off background data and/or auto sync in the settings menu solve this problem? and how does turning those off limit how my apps work (i mainly use facebook and twitter).

Getting more data allowance would solve the problem...

If you turn off auto sync then your facebook and twitter won't update. If you want to use those then you really need a bigger allowance. 100mb is nothing on a smartphone, I can quite easily use that in a day!
