Default memory clean up

Hi guys

My memory is getting very low. I know about all the move to SD methods; I want to try and get rid of some unused data first.

I always see posts about clear data and clear cache. Yes, this frees up space but do the apps actually need this data? What is the difference between data and cache? e.g. If I clear data from my contacts app, will all my contacts be deleted?

What am I safe to clean up? Is there a way of cleaning up everything at once? Is there an equivalent to defrag and disc clean up? Any advice on getting some memory back without moving apps would be great.

Thanks

Having a pretty similar problem actually. In the last week or so my memory has gone down to about 20mb, despite only installing a few widgets. Previously it was up at 50mb. I'm always careful, so have no idea where the 30mb or so went. I don't believe recent installs have taken more than 10mb.

I'm actually considering rooting.

I'm thinking about it but will not commit just yet.

I clear only cache. And to get realy the new memory space, I have to reboot the phone

Once I had cleared the "data" of the internet browser, all my bookmarks was cleared, too.

I would be very interested in the difference as well. I have the HTC desire and you can clear the cache or the data or both. I clear the cache all the time but the data gets bigger and bigger. I have read that some poeple have been deleting the data as well. Just want to make sure Im not going to loose all my contacts and whatnot. I've heard poeple deleting the data on facebook with no issues.

I have cleared the data from Facebook before with no problems. I don't have it linked with my phone contacts though. I just use the app when I want to go on
