Default Memory and message problems

Got my desire 2 weeks ago and I'm really pleased with it but this memory issue is starting to get on my nerves! I've downloaded a few applications (round 10-15) and tried to transfer as many of them to my SD card as possible. The memory on the phone is now 9MB but today its been playing up and i haven't been able to open any of my text messages as it says "not enough storage". I uninstalled a few and its started to work again but why is this happening in the first place?!!?

I wanted to have the luxury of downloading as many apps as i wanted to and now I can't exceed what i already have even though it says theres like 15MB of storage left!?!? Why cant i install on the SD card and does anyone know how to save space. I've tried clearing out my cache but that doesnt really touch it

Thanks!

Search this forum (or google) for that matter for keywords "A2SD+" or "low memory" and there should be lots of threads full of help. If I wasn't busy I would link them myself.

In short, there's no quick 10 second solution, but through "rooting" (the Android equivalent of jail breaking an iPhone, if you were curious), you can resolve this issue permanently.

Edit: Stole these from Danfrance's public profile

This happened to me. Only a hard reset solved it for me. If it happens again then a root and new image seems the only answer :-(
