Default Lost photos & LOST.DIR folder

We have a HTC Desire (Android 2.1) that lost photos/videos during a Windows XP import.

On the SDCARD there is nothing under the DCIM folder, however it appears that the lost files may be under the folder LOST.DIR.

These files under LOST.DIR cannot be opened using programs such as Windows Picture Viewer, Paint, Media Player etc.

Could these files be the missing photos/videos? If so, does anyone know how to recover these files so that they are in a readable format?

HTC Support didn't offer much help.

Thanks

Ash

Yes it is probably the case. The folder represents files the file system knows are there, but cannot be accessed. Its usually down to SD card corruption. Most common reason I fear, is when an SD card gives false capacity claims.

If they're corrupt in this way, there are no ways to recover them.

You can try a recovery tool. This one I have had success with, but not from a LOST DIR perspective. Is the files have been overwritten, theres nothing to be done:

Weird goings on... everything wiped, almost

I know this is an old thread, but this just happend to me. I copied all the files without extensions from the LOST.DIR onto my pc and renamed all of them to currentfilename.jpg where "currentfilename" is the current file name it has in that folder. Windows XP and 7 are able to open them up fine.I ignored files under 100KB since they most likely aren't photos that I took with my Droid X.

Hope that helps.

I'm a new Andriod user and just encountered a problem with missing photos in my Samsung S3 Mini. Tried a few freeware recovery tools (to no avail) before I stumbled onto this thread.
I copied the files in the LOST.DIR to a new folder on my pc, renamed them with the .jpg extension and it worked !! Managed to recover the photos I took on a recent holiday.
Thanks a million for posting this solution!
