Default How to Bump charge your battery

Firstly, I take no credit for this, I found it on another forum.

I am not 100% sure if it will improve battery life either but it wont hurt to try.

1. Power on your Desire then connect to your Charger and Fully charge until the LED changes Green.
2. Disconnect your phone from the charger and then power off.
3. Reconnect your phone to your charger with the power off and wait for the green LED.
4. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on.
5. Once the phone has fully booted / ready to use ... power off again.
6. With the power off connect the phone to the charger and wait for the green LED.
7. Disconnect from the Charger then power on and use normally.

Looks like a subtle change of the (allegedly) HTC-endorsed battery-doubling trick. I like this one as it doesn't rely on me waiting specific lengths of time (and that makes sense from a technological PoV). I may give it another go. The original suggestion did nothing for me but at least this one doesn't take 10 hours...

I was very sceptical too when I first saw it but...

I did it this morning. I have been off charge for 2 hours and battery is on 97%

I would normally expect to be down to at least 90%, since froyo my battery is a lot worse.

this leads me to believe what lekky has been saying, that it's merely misrepresenting the battery level. How can a device run for 7 hours and still be at 100%!

Hey spenspuma, don't roll your eyes unless you can disprove it.
I found the method mentioned above didn't work, but then I found the method posted below .
I can honestly say it has made a massive difference. I get 2 days from my Desire with 3G on, some Wifi, some AngryBirds and some downloading & browsing.
Follow the red text EXACTLY.

Dear XXXX, HTC and Sprint are taking steps to improve observed battery life. HTC is developing a number of handset software optimizations that are expected to increase device operating times. These updates are expected to be available as part of software pushes scheduled for later this summer. As with any software development effort, we cannot provide an exact date. Additionally, Sprint is working to optimize 4G network settings to improve battery life for customers in 4G markets. I will be happy to go over various setting with you that will help extend the battery life. Traditionally WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, and display brightness all greatly impact battery performance. With Android 2.1 another feature that can kill your battery are the Live Wallpapers. If you’re using Live Wallpaper just turn if off. Adjust the Brightness of the display (Menu | Settings | Sound & Display | Brightness). By default it is set to auto adjust but you can manually adjust it down. Consider adjusting the display timeout (Menu | Settings | Sound & Display | Screen Timeout). The default value is 1 minute but you can reduce it to as low as 15 sec but 30 seconds. By default your HTC Incredible vibrates every time you press a key. Turn it off by un-checking the box ‘Vibrate when typing’. Menu | Settings | Language & Keyboards | Touch Input | Text Input | Vibrate when typing. If Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Email, App Updates, or many other things are constantly popping notifications, consider turning some of them off as notifications do impact battery performance; This is done in each app. To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly: 1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well. HTC has received some reports regarding this issue with the screen seperation, and are currently analyzing the potential causes. Most customers are not reporting any issue related to this problem. The issue appears to be cosmetic and should not affect the operation of the device. Additional information will be provided after we finish our investigation of the issue. If you have any other questions or concerns please Reply back to this email or give us a call at our HTC Technical Support Line, 1-866-449-8358. I want to thank you for contacting HTC. In order to help improve our service I’d like to invite you to take a survey at HTC Online Survey, you can also checkout HTC Online Store (US) - Free Cell Phones & Cell Phone Service for more information. This is a well documented issue with current htc phones, lots of threads around the forums about it. It's 'officially' called 'bump charging'

Your battery stats

The reason it doesn't work for all is 'bump charging' only works if you are charging the phone while it is on. Once your phone gets to 100% it stops charging and since it is on battery drainage occurs even though the light stays green. As soon as you unplug it it will rapidly catch up to actual battery level, making it seem as your battery dropped to 90% in minutes.
Bump charging will give you an hour or two more battery life at best IMO. Any who are interested do a search on 'bump charge'

EDIT: moved to tips/tricks and updated thread title
